Topic: General Discussion / Diet cold drinks Right...got you now! Different types of diet drinks.I'll try to go into the nearest Morrison's here and let you know what's on the chiller shelves here...and then I hope you can beat them up with that info. Bit out of the way but I'll see if I can get there in the next few days. Regards Garry |

After illness, when my blood sugars were running high and I was concerned about ketones, I contacted Abbot to ask if the ketone test-strips are still available for my old Optium Xceed meter. They informed me that the new strips would not work and they are sending me a new meter. Top marks for customer service. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Should Beetroot be counted? Sorry - just found some web site saying it has a very low GL (Glycemic Load)http://www.desang.net/2013/03/making-carbs-count-beetroot/ Quote: Beetroot is virtually fat free and low in calories. Although it has a ‘medium’ GI (Glycaemic Index) of 64, It has an extremely low GL (Glycaemic Load) of 2.9 which means it’s converted into sugars very slowly |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Should Beetroot be counted? Could not find any reference to Beetroot on the forum search but it is a high sugar content vegetable. I was just wondering if I should count it, The Carbs are about 10%.DAFNE Online Forums Search does not return any posts. Google search does (DAFNE Online Beetroot) but when clicking on the returned page cannot find reference to beetroot ! Any advice in next 20 minutes would be appreciated. Might just go with half counting it ie 5% CHO ratio, Simon |

Topic: Site Development / Regular email with synopsis of all changes: posts, news, handbook updates etc... Thanks Simon for putting the "My Subscribed Topics" feature so quickly !I am just thinking that may be this area could be explored further. We receive so much stuff from web sites that we subscribe to, most of it is really junk but for DAFNE Online I can say that everything on the forums is very relevant and I would love to read it all. At the moment I only see new posts and new topics when I go to DAFNE Online and like some other members I sometimes have a few months break before coming back to DAFNE online. I personally would not mind subscribing to everything on DAFNE Online and I mean everything - but I would not want to receive hundreds of emails every week. Something for you to think about. Perhaps an automated weekly facility emailing those that want it everything that has been added or changed on the web site - posts, news, CP List additions and changes, DAFNE Handbook changes. Everything is relevant to us, Simon |

Topic: General Discussion / Diet cold drinks I know what you mean. I generally resign myself to being faced with a poor selection if in a supermarket and looking for a cold 500ml drink. I much prefer newsagents for their greater range, in most cases.I see that you are aligned to the NNUH so if you find yourself in the city centre I can recommend the newsagents on Surrey Street for their wide range of diet drinks - ginger beer, Rio(?), irn bru (a personal fave) as well as Dr Pepper, Lilt etc. |

Topic: General Discussion / Diet cold drinks ![]() Do you mean they only ever have regular coke in the chiller cabinet? Probably means your supermarket has no idea what stock has moved off the chiller cabinet shelf...maybe by the time you get there, whatever limited stock of diet coke has already been taken...or there is less profit margin in diet so they don't put it out?? Keep at them though. Up to them to satisfy your needs. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Optium Xceed meter renewal I have praised them in the past on here as personally I have always found them very helpful and accommodating.Have to agree with you Anele...the black and white finger lancer supplied is wicked. Still have one with my spare meter which I occasionally use during the night and I hate using it as even on the lowest setting should be renamed the Bengal lancer! Regards Garry |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / insulin pump How pleasant to hear about a consultant who listens to patient needs. There are plenty of them out there...not driven by fiscal constraint...but by patient need.I hope the pump solves all your issues. Good luck. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / My BG (Trending) Diary - All Comments Welcomed Sat 25/05 - Mon 27/05Can anybody see if there are any trends in this block I am missing? Ditto to what I posted on May 26, 2013 3:27pm re entering carbs correctly I feel as though I'm stuck in a rut at the moment ie even though I'm testing when I should ie fasting, before meals and before bed also watching BG levels I'm not making any adjustments. Not really checking for any 3 day trends. |

Topic: General Discussion / Diet cold drinks Hi I don't know if anyone else gets frustrated by this but when I go into the supermarket (any of them) they only ever have diet coke in the chiller cabinet. I no I can go to the isle can get a warm diet fizzy drink but I don't like them warm. I no on dafne I could have a "full fat" drink and inject for it but it'd rather not when there is a diet option. Does any one else get frustrated by this and does anyone think we can do anything about it? I did speak to a floor manager in morrisons today and he just said they get sent a shelf list and that's what they have to put out, he did say he would see what he could do but I wasn't convinced he would. I'm looking at this not just from a diabetics point of view but also a healthy living view |

Topic: General Discussion / high and lows Hi,Not much I can add but RE: Dawn Phenomenon I have terrible bother with it and have been through the motions with MDI, went from Lantus, to Levemir and then Humulin I and despite changing timings injections sites etc it can't combat it. My biggest frustration is that no matter what my waking BM is it will always rise differently each day. No matter that my routine is the same Monday to Friday it will rise anywhere between 6 to 12 mmol so I can't predict how much QA to correct by each time, one day could bring me down to target but the same dose for the same reading the next day could send my hypo or hardly bring it down. I can only keep on correcting at lunchtime when the rise has apparantly stopped and I know my ratio well enough to properly bring myself back down to target. The slight upside is that since MDI has failed I have been approved for an insulin pump when time and availabilty comes along. Until then it's think happy thoughts and carry-on correcting (sounds like a diabetic Sid James film ![]() While thinking about D.P, does anyone else who experiences it find they never seem to have energy in the mornings and only 'come round' about lunchtime? I would like to think that if my D.P was tamed I would start the day with energy and enthusiasm before the whole office thinks I'm naturally grumpy in the mornings ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / high and lows Dawn Phenomenon is an annoyance and very common. Hormones released in the morning make you more resistant to insulin so you need more to compensate. What you may find is that you need to increase your morning QA ratios to compensate for DP. I think that your plan to increase night time BI is excellent. Like you I am on Lantus, and I split my dose in January because it was not lasting the full 24 hours, and the highs I was experiencing after dinner went away. Do you still have your BG readings from your DAFNE course? Just wondering if your overnight hypo that led to the decrease in BI was within 5 hours of taking QA? If so, it may have been that you just took too much QA rather than the BI being the issue. |

Topic: General Discussion / high and lows Hi, I have a similar issue and again I was told it was dawn syndrome - today I woke @ 4.2 bg had no carb breakfast and by 10am was 15bg. I hav upped my night time back ground which gives me a good start to the day - take another fast reading at 10am and adjust as required - the rest of the day then pans out ok. Keep an eye on your evening ratios when increasing night back ground as I had a few hypos to staRt with -took a few 3am readings to help adjust. |
