Topic: General Discussion / Diet cold drinks Hi I don't know if anyone else gets frustrated by this but when I go into the supermarket (any of them) they only ever have diet coke in the chiller cabinet. I no I can go to the isle can get a warm diet fizzy drink but I don't like them warm. I no on dafne I could have a "full fat" drink and inject for it but it'd rather not when there is a diet option. Does any one else get frustrated by this and does anyone think we can do anything about it? I did speak to a floor manager in morrisons today and he just said they get sent a shelf list and that's what they have to put out, he did say he would see what he could do but I wasn't convinced he would. I'm looking at this not just from a diabetics point of view but also a healthy living view |

Topic: General Discussion / high and lows Hi,Not much I can add but RE: Dawn Phenomenon I have terrible bother with it and have been through the motions with MDI, went from Lantus, to Levemir and then Humulin I and despite changing timings injections sites etc it can't combat it. My biggest frustration is that no matter what my waking BM is it will always rise differently each day. No matter that my routine is the same Monday to Friday it will rise anywhere between 6 to 12 mmol so I can't predict how much QA to correct by each time, one day could bring me down to target but the same dose for the same reading the next day could send my hypo or hardly bring it down. I can only keep on correcting at lunchtime when the rise has apparantly stopped and I know my ratio well enough to properly bring myself back down to target. The slight upside is that since MDI has failed I have been approved for an insulin pump when time and availabilty comes along. Until then it's think happy thoughts and carry-on correcting (sounds like a diabetic Sid James film While thinking about D.P, does anyone else who experiences it find they never seem to have energy in the mornings and only 'come round' about lunchtime? I would like to think that if my D.P was tamed I would start the day with energy and enthusiasm before the whole office thinks I'm naturally grumpy in the mornings |

Topic: General Discussion / high and lows Dawn Phenomenon is an annoyance and very common. Hormones released in the morning make you more resistant to insulin so you need more to compensate. What you may find is that you need to increase your morning QA ratios to compensate for DP. I think that your plan to increase night time BI is excellent. Like you I am on Lantus, and I split my dose in January because it was not lasting the full 24 hours, and the highs I was experiencing after dinner went away. Do you still have your BG readings from your DAFNE course? Just wondering if your overnight hypo that led to the decrease in BI was within 5 hours of taking QA? If so, it may have been that you just took too much QA rather than the BI being the issue. |

Topic: General Discussion / high and lows Hi, I have a similar issue and again I was told it was dawn syndrome - today I woke @ 4.2 bg had no carb breakfast and by 10am was 15bg. I hav upped my night time back ground which gives me a good start to the day - take another fast reading at 10am and adjust as required - the rest of the day then pans out ok. Keep an eye on your evening ratios when increasing night back ground as I had a few hypos to staRt with -took a few 3am readings to help adjust. |

Topic: General Discussion / NHS Medication Changes: Are you affected? I contacted PALS (as Mark suggested) but they said they were 'not able to comment about CCG Policies and Procedures'. So I contacted the DAFNE team in Maidstone Hospital and they faxed a letter they had sent my GP earlier in the year, saying that the ketone blood-testing strips should be made available to me. So hopefully, the problem is solved - thanks for everybody's help. |

Topic: Questions ? / insulin pump Not sure om availability, my consultant recommended the medtronic..but I am against the limitations of the tubing with access to controls and wearing dresses, added to teaching teenagers etc so requested the omnipod and he said yes! Will post how I get on, hopefully it will solve my issues with insulin sensitivity |

Topic: Questions ? / insulin pump The Omnipid, wow!!Are these widely available where you are............ I would love to to get one of these, only been on the pump less than 6 months and the tubing really isn't a problem, but no tubing would open up more entry sites...... Cant wait to hear your thoughts........... |

Topic: Questions ? / Chia seed As a long distance runner it was suggested by a friend that I try taking Chia seed as a supplement. The product has improved my performance and recovery time after serious exercise significantly after only three weeks but.......As a type 1 diabetic of many years standing my sugar levels are generally well controlled but after starting taking Chia seed at the suggested dosage of 2 tablespoons with breakfast things have started changing. On a normal morning I run 5-6 miles after breakfast or once a week something longer (20 miles) whereas before after the shorter runs I would expect blood readings of 6-9 I am now getting 15-20. On a long run I generally check after about 90 minutes and expect about 4-7 (a good excuse for an energy bar) but now my sugar is still sky high and will stay that way until the end. I've tried missing the seed and things go back to normal for that day but I am loth to take mega insulin doses just in case or give the stuff up because of the improvement to, in particular my recovery time (after 20miles I feel I could do the same thing that afternoon). After a high lunch dose things are back to normal by mid afternoon. Advice please. George Thomson |

Topic: General Discussion / Optium Xceed meter renewal Hi everyone,Just to say I called Abbot a while ago to get a replacement battery for my Optium Xceed and as I could no longer read the serial number on the back they issued me with a new one (Optium Freestyle). They advised this was a design fault and the Freestyle meters have a new serial number and bar code sticker that will not fade through time. I also mentioned I had a spare Xceed meter in my car which I don't need to use very often and thankfully I told them about it as it also needed replacing as would not have the update for no longer needing to be coded. So I ended up getting two new meters and also two new finger prickers (Blue in colour) which are much better than the black and white one that comes as standard with the meter as I find it is less painful. Just a thought for anyonme out there that my have an old Xceed meter (older than 2 years or so). Hope this helps Cheers, Anele. |

Topic: General Discussion / NHS Medication Changes: Are you affected? Abbot renamed the meter as a rebranding exercise a while ago. Think they call it the same throughout the world now.Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / high and lows There is an awful lot of correction going on during the morning. That tends to indicate that BI is too low, however you then tend to go low in the afternoons around 4 hours after taking QA so unless you are on a non-standard QA, that indicates the BI is too high. Confused yet?Can you please answer the following? 1) Can you tell us a bit about what BI and QA insulin you are on? 2) In the afternoons, do you exercise, or do an activity that requires lots of blood sugar such as concentrating? If so, when you do this activity, can you please note it in the diary? There are a few variables to work out here. First is the correct BI dosage because if that isn't correct, then everything else becomes too hard to calculate. It gets a little tricky because of your split dose, but I'm not against split doses - I do it myself - but may need a little work to identify the correct BIs. Second will be to work out your QA ratios which probably aren't too far off what you are already using, but a bit hard to tell with all of the corrections. Third will be to work out what your correction doses are - how far do you drop when you have the correct BI and you take 1 unit of QA. Post your results in a couple of days and let's see if the BI increase has helped things. Once we get the BI right, we can work on the others. |

Topic: General Discussion / high and lows It may be worthwhile doing a test at 230/3am to see what's going on, as nighttime hypos can cause the morning highs! Would be best to do this for a few days before increasing bi, to check for pattern first. |

Topic: General Discussion / high and lows Is there a reason you are taking QA if no carbs and you're within target..eg. Today, there is no need to correct, which can then lead to hypo! Also some of your corrections appear very high! |
