as far as i can remember from my dafne course they said that any q/a dose of over 15 units taken all together may have a a bit of different effect than a dose of under 15 would have but once again it probably depends on the individual

It was all about the use of Byetta, Januvia and Victoza which are injected to achieve better diabetic control and also weight-loss. It seems that they can also cause pancreatisis - which can then lead to pancreatic cancer. According to several of the doctors contributing to the programme, the pharmaceutical companies who manufacture these drugs are refusing to reveal some of the findings relating to the testing of these drugs. The question these doctors are asking is 'Do these companies have something to hide?'

Topic: General Discussion / Injection technique

You can basically inject anywhere tat works.......the needle goes into subcutaneous tissue, so won't reach fat layers.......

The front of the thighs are used more commonly......so the thigh you see if standing in front of a mirror......

The arm is usually the area above your tricep.......

Anywhere on your bum.....

And of course your waist/stomach.......

Each area absorbs differently.......but most of the time the difference is negligible...

I don't know what part of the arm/leg is the right part to inject into. The arms I have never tried as I cannot get the angle right. The legs I attempt periodically but fail. I have heard that it is best to inject into the inner front part of the thigh, but that seems very painful. I can inject into the outer part of the thigh but I think this could be 'wrong'. But I don't know if it matters as my legs are very fat all over, so wherever I inject I would be injecting into fat anyway.

As well as that, I can't seem to get my lantus injection right. The humalog is fine. But a while ago I was swapped to a different pen for the Lantus (I used to use the white disposable ones but they stopped making them, now I use some grey disposable ones). Since then, however long I wait the pen always comes out with a drop or two of insulin still coming out, I have waited for 5, 10, 20 seconds, counting slowly, still happens. I wondered if I was using incorrect needles but the doctor told me they were the right ones (microfines).

Your right, if you are on target by the next meal, your CPs will have been matched correctly, but it doesn't meant the digestion and insulin action has been matched correctly. Which may result in mid meal spikes in the high teens.......

Which for some can drive up their HbA1c..........but doesn't for others.....

I think in your circumstance you don't really want to be aiming for blood sugars between 4 and 7 all the way from one meal to the next.....to be safe its wise to allow that spike in blood sugar, provided it doesn't effect you long term blood sugar......

what was your last test result.......?

YouTube Video

This is the first video that came up from a Google search, cant view it in my work so it may be no use to you, looks like there are many similar videos however....

Is there something specifically you are finding difficult........?

When I was injecting the needle went in at 90 degrees to the skin surface, dose delivered, waited 5 seconds approximately.....

Is this what you mean when you say 'technique'?

Topic: General Discussion / Lantus Prefilled Pen

I think you're right about having a good supplies of spares but it would be worth informing the manufacturers so that they are informed of malfunctions - it's crucial. Thank goodness you're organised and had a spare syringe and I agree, when you're going away, take spares. I think it's scary when this sort of thing happens - we absolutely need it to be safe and reliable.
I looked on here this morning because I just found (after three days of shocking morning BGs) that my Levemir (another background/basal insulin) vial had cracked and so insulin must have been dripping out when I injected - I've had this before too.

Topic: General Discussion / Lantus Prefilled Pen

I'd like to know if anyone has had the misfortune of one of these pens malfunctioning. Last night I went to use the last pen in the box, attached the needle, but could not get the pen to draw up the insulin. It was totally jammed. Luckily I found a disposable syringe and could draw up my insulin. This 'jamming' actually happened to me once before (quite some time ago), but fortunately there were more in the box. I just thought, what the heck would have happened if I had been away somewhere perhaps overnight?????? I think the only answer is to make sure I put in a prescription order when I'm down to two left in the box.

Hope they didn't say a 13u limit Anele46...
as I had 19 at lunch today and 22u with dinner as it all depends upon our individual insulin sensitivity/resistance at different times of the day.

Increasing Lantus (BI)

31/05/2013
6.2 - bedtime
11.1 - this morning for me

30/05/2013
7.7 - bedtime
18.2 - this morning for me

29/05/2013
no test - bedtime
14.5 - this morning for me

28/05/2013
9.7 - bedtime
10.5 - this morning for me

So looking back at the last 3 days I'm thinking my BI needs increasing. I'm currently taking 20u split - 10u am & 10u pm & am undecided whether to increase by 2u (11u am & 11u pm) or 4u (12u am & 12u pm).

What does anyone think please?

Could be the DAWN Phenomenon?
A pump would probably be great for you. Was at my Annual DAFNE clinic visit and they advised that they are now in a much better position to offer Pumps to people in Scotland (not sure where you live in the country) and advised that a Pump is the best way to manange the Dawn Phenomenon.

Just a thought....

Cheers Smile

So glad your BG was within range after. I'd be very concerned injecting that amount of QA in one go as I remember from my DAFNE course that they do not recommend injecting more than I think 13 units if I remember correctly . The risk of a severe hypo would definitely put me off. I would probably have split the dose.
Thank goodness you were ok Smile
All the best.

Hi

Does anyone know of a website or youtube video that demonstrates good injection technique, especially on the arms and thighs? I have not brushed up on this for a while and I fear I am a bit rusty.

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android - adding entries with no wifi connection

I know I need a wi-fi connection for uploading entries so they go onto the main site but do I need a wi-fi connection for adding entries.

The reason i'm asking is because I'm going on holiday for a week and may not have access to a Wi-Fi connection at times.

because i drive a bus for a living i am required by law to test my bg levels at least every 2 hours. as long as my bg is within target for my next meal then i feel i have matched my cps correctly. so depending how long the gap is between meals depends on how much q/a insulin that i take Very Happy

So far LOVE the omnipod. The tiny doses are great for me and with no tubing I barely know its there...other than the clicking and beeps giving its presence away. Have had a few lows, at 3.8 but have adjusted basal rates for different times of the day to help stop this. But it's great!! Laughing Very Happy

Yes, good point Garry, but I forgot to mention in my last post that after the highlighted letter from the DAFNE team some blood-testing strips were prescribed as well as the two pots of urine-testing strips - so I'm fully equipped now.

Thanks for letting us know Alan.
Personally, I would get some in to go on the shelf. Some pharmacies do not keep them as stock and you may wait a day or so to be able to start checking your Ketone level....and if you feel dog rough...the last thing you need do is go to a pharmacy to collect some.
Shelf life for the Abbot strips is normally over 12 months.
The ones I have in my meter wallet now are dated 05/2014. I have another box at home which I think are 10/2014 but not sure.
Hopefully they run out of date before you need use them!
