I've knocked a lot of carbs off the menu for a couple of weeks - novo rapid intake has dropped significantly, still testing as normal, insulatard intake remains the same. Basically eating salads, veg, fruit, dried fruit, nuts, eggs, cheese and chicken or fish. I think the novo rapid is way too fast for this and that my BG insulatard is mopping up. If I have a lot of fruit then a unit or two of novo rapid sorts it. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / High Bloods Welcome to the forum ljwhite1983.![]() See your diary fine. As a graduate Laura, I hope you have found that all of the handbook information is available to you on the website. To help, the forum members need an indication as to your insulin types. You will then get help from those that use your insulins. Regards Garry |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / High Bloods Hi thereHope you can see my diary, if not let me know. It been a while since I properly tracked my BG and CP's etc but have been doing so for the past month. I no longer have any of my DAFNE material so glad I found this website. If I have high blood readings all day even with corrections would you adjust the ratio or BI? Thanks Laura |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / insulin pump Currently having to alter basal rates every few days asI appear to have become even more sensitive than before, but at least it can be easily adapted compared to injections. In general control is already better than before...wish I had been put on pump at start now. My pod is now known as my new best friend!![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Carbohydrates and Protein I have also found mention of counting protein when calculating the overall content of a meal. This source comes from "Your diabetes science experiment" by Ginger Vieira and states that you should count the entire protein value over 20g which is then divided by two.To take the 60g protein amount used earlier, with Ginger's formula it would be a case of (60 - 20)/2 = 20g of equivalent carbohydrate. At a recent DAFNE group meeting I asked about this approach and was told not to bother counting protein on account of the time it takes to get converted. I haven't delved any further in to this but I am mindful of it if thinking of just eating chicken, for example, as part of a carb-free meal. Not sure this actually helps but it perhaps adds additional perspective. |

Topic: General Discussion / My BG (Trending) Diary - All Comments Welcomed Hi Anele,- Re your BI & buttocks - do you manage to get right round to the back for injecting into the buttocks or just sort of at the side of the buttocks? - Re QA - that sounds like a really good idea of injecting into thighs for brekkie & dinner then stomach for lunch. - For any corrections before bed or any snacks I presume this is your QA? - just a refresher for me re changing injection sites would you do this all in one go or gradually? I completed an X-Pert insulin course just a few weeks back which was very similar to things done on a DAFNE course but sometimes it's good to have a refresher from someone. Many thanks Gill ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / My BG (Trending) Diary - All Comments Welcomed
Hi Gill, Maybe if you've been injecting there for a long time even if you rotate round your belly button it may no longer be enough. My DAFNE consultant advised that you don't need to have noticeable lumps to start getting issues with your injection sites. I use my buttocks for my BI which frees up my thighs for my breakkie and dinner and I use my stomach for lunch. The buttocks aren't always the best or most convenient place for injecting but at least I know that I'm only using the same site once a day (if I need to correct before bed or I have a snack I'll use my stomach). It was just a thought and understand rotating sites isn't easy but may be better for you in the long run? All the best ![]() Anele, |

Topic: General Discussion / My BG (Trending) Diary - All Comments Welcomed Hi Anele46,Thanks for your reply/comments. Yes that's right I only use my stomach for QA but I do always inject in different areas & in a sort of smiley face below my belly button. I use right & left thighs for BI (whiskysmum) Gill ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / My BG (Trending) Diary - All Comments Welcomed Hi there,The fact that you're getting varied results all the time points to your injection site as from what you've recorded you only use your stomach for yout QA. When I was at my annual DAFNE catch up a few weeks ago there was a guy there who was getting results all over he place with no pattern and the DAFNE team completely agreed that his injection sites seemed to be the issue. Worth a try to use elsewhere but I appreciate that the stomach tends to be the least painful and also the most discreet (depending on what you're wearing) for injecting in public. If you do try a new site bear in mind that your Insulin sensitivity could be increased as the insulin may be absorbed better. Cheers ![]() |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / insulin pump
Hello, Not sure if it's the same in Lanarkshire but when I was at my DAFNE yearly catch up a few weeks ago (in Glasgow) they were actively looking for people to get pumps. Hope you get one ![]() Cheers. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android - adding entries with no wifi connection As far as I am aware it works the same as the iPhone app, which is you add entries at anytime then when you do have a wifi connection the app compares what is in you app with the website and adds entries that are missing. So yes you can add entries with no wifi. With regards to using the 3G connection it depends on where you are going. If its outside of the country you will be charged a minimum of £1.99 per day probably more depending on the phone company. Better to use wifi if possible, there are loads of free wifi points all over the world now, |

Topic: General Discussion / popcorn heaven as far as i can remember from my dafne course they said that any q/a dose of over 15 units taken all together may have a a bit of different effect than a dose of under 15 would have but once again it probably depends on the individualcheers paulj ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / TV Programme It was all about the use of Byetta, Januvia and Victoza which are injected to achieve better diabetic control and also weight-loss. It seems that they can also cause pancreatisis - which can then lead to pancreatic cancer. According to several of the doctors contributing to the programme, the pharmaceutical companies who manufacture these drugs are refusing to reveal some of the findings relating to the testing of these drugs. The question these doctors are asking is 'Do these companies have something to hide?' |

Topic: General Discussion / Injection technique You can basically inject anywhere tat works.......the needle goes into subcutaneous tissue, so won't reach fat layers.......The front of the thighs are used more commonly......so the thigh you see if standing in front of a mirror...... The arm is usually the area above your tricep....... Anywhere on your bum..... And of course your waist/stomach....... Each area absorbs differently.......but most of the time the difference is negligible... |

Topic: General Discussion / Injection technique I don't know what part of the arm/leg is the right part to inject into. The arms I have never tried as I cannot get the angle right. The legs I attempt periodically but fail. I have heard that it is best to inject into the inner front part of the thigh, but that seems very painful. I can inject into the outer part of the thigh but I think this could be 'wrong'. But I don't know if it matters as my legs are very fat all over, so wherever I inject I would be injecting into fat anyway. As well as that, I can't seem to get my lantus injection right. The humalog is fine. But a while ago I was swapped to a different pen for the Lantus (I used to use the white disposable ones but they stopped making them, now I use some grey disposable ones). Since then, however long I wait the pen always comes out with a drop or two of insulin still coming out, I have waited for 5, 10, 20 seconds, counting slowly, still happens. I wondered if I was using incorrect needles but the doctor told me they were the right ones (microfines). |

Topic: General Discussion / jacket potato salad meal Your right, if you are on target by the next meal, your CPs will have been matched correctly, but it doesn't meant the digestion and insulin action has been matched correctly. Which may result in mid meal spikes in the high teens.......Which for some can drive up their HbA1c..........but doesn't for others..... I think in your circumstance you don't really want to be aiming for blood sugars between 4 and 7 all the way from one meal to the next.....to be safe its wise to allow that spike in blood sugar, provided it doesn't effect you long term blood sugar...... what was your last test result.......? |

Topic: General Discussion / Injection technique YouTube VideoThis is the first video that came up from a Google search, cant view it in my work so it may be no use to you, looks like there are many similar videos however.... Is there something specifically you are finding difficult........? When I was injecting the needle went in at 90 degrees to the skin surface, dose delivered, waited 5 seconds approximately..... Is this what you mean when you say 'technique'? |
