Topic: General Discussion / Lantus Prefilled Pen I think you're right about having a good supplies of spares but it would be worth informing the manufacturers so that they are informed of malfunctions - it's crucial. Thank goodness you're organised and had a spare syringe and I agree, when you're going away, take spares. I think it's scary when this sort of thing happens - we absolutely need it to be safe and reliable.I looked on here this morning because I just found (after three days of shocking morning BGs) that my Levemir (another background/basal insulin) vial had cracked and so insulin must have been dripping out when I injected - I've had this before too. |

Topic: General Discussion / Lantus Prefilled Pen I'd like to know if anyone has had the misfortune of one of these pens malfunctioning. Last night I went to use the last pen in the box, attached the needle, but could not get the pen to draw up the insulin. It was totally jammed. Luckily I found a disposable syringe and could draw up my insulin. This 'jamming' actually happened to me once before (quite some time ago), but fortunately there were more in the box. I just thought, what the heck would have happened if I had been away somewhere perhaps overnight?????? I think the only answer is to make sure I put in a prescription order when I'm down to two left in the box. |

Topic: General Discussion / popcorn heaven Hope they didn't say a 13u limit Anele46...as I had 19 at lunch today and 22u with dinner as it all depends upon our individual insulin sensitivity/resistance at different times of the day. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Increasing Lantus (BI)
Could be the DAWN Phenomenon? A pump would probably be great for you. Was at my Annual DAFNE clinic visit and they advised that they are now in a much better position to offer Pumps to people in Scotland (not sure where you live in the country) and advised that a Pump is the best way to manange the Dawn Phenomenon. Just a thought.... Cheers ![]() |

So glad your BG was within range after. I'd be very concerned injecting that amount of QA in one go as I remember from my DAFNE course that they do not recommend injecting more than I think 13 units if I remember correctly . The risk of a severe hypo would definitely put me off. I would probably have split the dose. Thank goodness you were ok ![]() All the best. |

Topic: General Discussion / Injection technique HiDoes anyone know of a website or youtube video that demonstrates good injection technique, especially on the arms and thighs? I have not brushed up on this for a while and I fear I am a bit rusty. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android - adding entries with no wifi connection I know I need a wi-fi connection for uploading entries so they go onto the main site but do I need a wi-fi connection for adding entries. The reason i'm asking is because I'm going on holiday for a week and may not have access to a Wi-Fi connection at times. |

Topic: General Discussion / jacket potato salad meal because i drive a bus for a living i am required by law to test my bg levels at least every 2 hours. as long as my bg is within target for my next meal then i feel i have matched my cps correctly. so depending how long the gap is between meals depends on how much q/a insulin that i take![]() |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / insulin pump So far LOVE the omnipod. The tiny doses are great for me and with no tubing I barely know its there...other than the clicking and beeps giving its presence away. Have had a few lows, at 3.8 but have adjusted basal rates for different times of the day to help stop this. But it's great!!![]() ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / NHS Medication Changes: Are you affected? Yes, good point Garry, but I forgot to mention in my last post that after the highlighted letter from the DAFNE team some blood-testing strips were prescribed as well as the two pots of urine-testing strips - so I'm fully equipped now. |

Topic: General Discussion / NHS Medication Changes: Are you affected? Thanks for letting us know Alan.Personally, I would get some in to go on the shelf. Some pharmacies do not keep them as stock and you may wait a day or so to be able to start checking your Ketone level....and if you feel dog rough...the last thing you need do is go to a pharmacy to collect some. Shelf life for the Abbot strips is normally over 12 months. The ones I have in my meter wallet now are dated 05/2014. I have another box at home which I think are 10/2014 but not sure. Hopefully they run out of date before you need use them! Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / NHS Medication Changes: Are you affected? The faxed letter from the DAFNE team resulted in me getting a prescription for a pot of urine testing strips! I contacted the DAFNE team to confirm that the faxed letter specified ketone blood-testing strips and they confirmed that it did and they faxed it again. I got another pot of urine testing strips! I asked the DAFNE team to fax it again, but highlight the words 'Ketone blood-testing strips'. I made an appointment to see the GP today, to explain that I don't need the blood-testing strips at the moment - I only need them when I am ill. I was amazed when she said 'But we don't know when you're going to be ill'. I had to explain that that is why I wanted them on the prescription request form - so I could request them when I'm ill. So at last, they have been added to my request form - it was a real struggle. |

Topic: General Discussion / Carbohydrates and Protein Warwick,Does the book mention anything about how fast, in comparison to carbs, the protein is converted....? I have spoke to few others who also consider protein, not me personally though....... I am under the impression that any quick acting insulin, will ALWAYS work too fast for the protein conversion..... I realize this may not be true for everyone.......is that a slower than normal insulin action, or a quicker than normal protein conversion.... ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / jacket potato salad meal Slower digested foods, like jacket potato [the skins], and pizza can often benefit from a dose of insulin later on......depending on your BG before the meal however, its more common to split the dose, as opposed to giving it all later, so some up front, the rest later on...... Just for information, myself and I know a lot other tend to inject/dose there insulin before the meal, sometimes up to 40 minutes, this helps with mid meal spiking.... Have you observed your blood sugars in between meals yet......? |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carb Counting Welcome to the forum......![]() My Fitness Pal website states that 100ml of the stuff contains 13g of carbs, and a nice 54 calories.... I think a medium one is about 445ml, so between 50 and 60 grams of carbs, depending on the flavour..... a quick Google should help you out if your going to be having them on a regular basis...... |

Topic: General Discussion / jacket potato salad meal just in case anyone has problems with thier bg readings after eating a jacket potato.i have previously always found that when i have had this for my evening meal the next morning i have woken up with bg above target and as aresult increased my ratio of q/a insulin.however what i found worked better was toi inject the q/a insuluin about an hour after i had finished eating to be a better solutuion. most other meals i still tend to inject straight after the meal but for some reason with the above this does not seem to be the case. if anyone else has this problem hopefully this might be some help.so now i use the same q/a ratio for this as i do for any other evening meal![]() cheers paulj |
