Topic: General Discussion / My BG (Trending) Diary - All Comments Welcomed
Hi Gill, Maybe if you've been injecting there for a long time even if you rotate round your belly button it may no longer be enough. My DAFNE consultant advised that you don't need to have noticeable lumps to start getting issues with your injection sites. I use my buttocks for my BI which frees up my thighs for my breakkie and dinner and I use my stomach for lunch. The buttocks aren't always the best or most convenient place for injecting but at least I know that I'm only using the same site once a day (if I need to correct before bed or I have a snack I'll use my stomach). It was just a thought and understand rotating sites isn't easy but may be better for you in the long run? All the best Anele, |

Topic: General Discussion / My BG (Trending) Diary - All Comments Welcomed Hi Anele46,Thanks for your reply/comments. Yes that's right I only use my stomach for QA but I do always inject in different areas & in a sort of smiley face below my belly button. I use right & left thighs for BI (whiskysmum) Gill |

Topic: General Discussion / My BG (Trending) Diary - All Comments Welcomed Hi there,The fact that you're getting varied results all the time points to your injection site as from what you've recorded you only use your stomach for yout QA. When I was at my annual DAFNE catch up a few weeks ago there was a guy there who was getting results all over he place with no pattern and the DAFNE team completely agreed that his injection sites seemed to be the issue. Worth a try to use elsewhere but I appreciate that the stomach tends to be the least painful and also the most discreet (depending on what you're wearing) for injecting in public. If you do try a new site bear in mind that your Insulin sensitivity could be increased as the insulin may be absorbed better. Cheers |

Topic: Questions ? / insulin pump
Hello, Not sure if it's the same in Lanarkshire but when I was at my DAFNE yearly catch up a few weeks ago (in Glasgow) they were actively looking for people to get pumps. Hope you get one Cheers. |

Topic: General Discussion / popcorn heaven I remember getting a printed off sheet to take away with the max recommended amounts of QA to inject depending on the ratio you are on and I am sure it was around the 13U - will have a look for it.Cheers |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android - adding entries with no wifi connection As far as I am aware it works the same as the iPhone app, which is you add entries at anytime then when you do have a wifi connection the app compares what is in you app with the website and adds entries that are missing. So yes you can add entries with no wifi. With regards to using the 3G connection it depends on where you are going. If its outside of the country you will be charged a minimum of £1.99 per day probably more depending on the phone company. Better to use wifi if possible, there are loads of free wifi points all over the world now, |

Topic: General Discussion / popcorn heaven as far as i can remember from my dafne course they said that any q/a dose of over 15 units taken all together may have a a bit of different effect than a dose of under 15 would have but once again it probably depends on the individualcheers paulj |

Topic: General Discussion / TV Programme It was all about the use of Byetta, Januvia and Victoza which are injected to achieve better diabetic control and also weight-loss. It seems that they can also cause pancreatisis - which can then lead to pancreatic cancer. According to several of the doctors contributing to the programme, the pharmaceutical companies who manufacture these drugs are refusing to reveal some of the findings relating to the testing of these drugs. The question these doctors are asking is 'Do these companies have something to hide?' |

Topic: General Discussion / Injection technique You can basically inject anywhere tat works.......the needle goes into subcutaneous tissue, so won't reach fat layers.......The front of the thighs are used more commonly......so the thigh you see if standing in front of a mirror...... The arm is usually the area above your tricep....... Anywhere on your bum..... And of course your waist/stomach....... Each area absorbs differently.......but most of the time the difference is negligible... |

Topic: General Discussion / Injection technique I don't know what part of the arm/leg is the right part to inject into. The arms I have never tried as I cannot get the angle right. The legs I attempt periodically but fail. I have heard that it is best to inject into the inner front part of the thigh, but that seems very painful. I can inject into the outer part of the thigh but I think this could be 'wrong'. But I don't know if it matters as my legs are very fat all over, so wherever I inject I would be injecting into fat anyway. As well as that, I can't seem to get my lantus injection right. The humalog is fine. But a while ago I was swapped to a different pen for the Lantus (I used to use the white disposable ones but they stopped making them, now I use some grey disposable ones). Since then, however long I wait the pen always comes out with a drop or two of insulin still coming out, I have waited for 5, 10, 20 seconds, counting slowly, still happens. I wondered if I was using incorrect needles but the doctor told me they were the right ones (microfines). |

Topic: General Discussion / jacket potato salad meal Your right, if you are on target by the next meal, your CPs will have been matched correctly, but it doesn't meant the digestion and insulin action has been matched correctly. Which may result in mid meal spikes in the high teens.......Which for some can drive up their HbA1c..........but doesn't for others..... I think in your circumstance you don't really want to be aiming for blood sugars between 4 and 7 all the way from one meal to the next.....to be safe its wise to allow that spike in blood sugar, provided it doesn't effect you long term blood sugar...... what was your last test result.......? |

Topic: General Discussion / Injection technique YouTube VideoThis is the first video that came up from a Google search, cant view it in my work so it may be no use to you, looks like there are many similar videos however.... Is there something specifically you are finding difficult........? When I was injecting the needle went in at 90 degrees to the skin surface, dose delivered, waited 5 seconds approximately..... Is this what you mean when you say 'technique'? |

Topic: General Discussion / Lantus Prefilled Pen I think you're right about having a good supplies of spares but it would be worth informing the manufacturers so that they are informed of malfunctions - it's crucial. Thank goodness you're organised and had a spare syringe and I agree, when you're going away, take spares. I think it's scary when this sort of thing happens - we absolutely need it to be safe and reliable.I looked on here this morning because I just found (after three days of shocking morning BGs) that my Levemir (another background/basal insulin) vial had cracked and so insulin must have been dripping out when I injected - I've had this before too. |

Topic: General Discussion / Lantus Prefilled Pen I'd like to know if anyone has had the misfortune of one of these pens malfunctioning. Last night I went to use the last pen in the box, attached the needle, but could not get the pen to draw up the insulin. It was totally jammed. Luckily I found a disposable syringe and could draw up my insulin. This 'jamming' actually happened to me once before (quite some time ago), but fortunately there were more in the box. I just thought, what the heck would have happened if I had been away somewhere perhaps overnight?????? I think the only answer is to make sure I put in a prescription order when I'm down to two left in the box. |

Topic: General Discussion / popcorn heaven Hope they didn't say a 13u limit Anele46...as I had 19 at lunch today and 22u with dinner as it all depends upon our individual insulin sensitivity/resistance at different times of the day. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Increasing Lantus (BI)
Could be the DAWN Phenomenon? A pump would probably be great for you. Was at my Annual DAFNE clinic visit and they advised that they are now in a much better position to offer Pumps to people in Scotland (not sure where you live in the country) and advised that a Pump is the best way to manange the Dawn Phenomenon. Just a thought.... Cheers |

So glad your BG was within range after. I'd be very concerned injecting that amount of QA in one go as I remember from my DAFNE course that they do not recommend injecting more than I think 13 units if I remember correctly . The risk of a severe hypo would definitely put me off. I would probably have split the dose. Thank goodness you were ok All the best. |

Topic: General Discussion / Injection technique HiDoes anyone know of a website or youtube video that demonstrates good injection technique, especially on the arms and thighs? I have not brushed up on this for a while and I fear I am a bit rusty. |
