Topic: General Discussion / NHS Medication Changes: Are you affected? The faxed letter from the DAFNE team resulted in me getting a prescription for a pot of urine testing strips! I contacted the DAFNE team to confirm that the faxed letter specified ketone blood-testing strips and they confirmed that it did and they faxed it again. I got another pot of urine testing strips! I asked the DAFNE team to fax it again, but highlight the words 'Ketone blood-testing strips'. I made an appointment to see the GP today, to explain that I don't need the blood-testing strips at the moment - I only need them when I am ill. I was amazed when she said 'But we don't know when you're going to be ill'. I had to explain that that is why I wanted them on the prescription request form - so I could request them when I'm ill. So at last, they have been added to my request form - it was a real struggle. |

Topic: General Discussion / Carbohydrates and Protein Warwick,Does the book mention anything about how fast, in comparison to carbs, the protein is converted....? I have spoke to few others who also consider protein, not me personally though....... I am under the impression that any quick acting insulin, will ALWAYS work too fast for the protein conversion..... I realize this may not be true for everyone.......is that a slower than normal insulin action, or a quicker than normal protein conversion.... ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / jacket potato salad meal Slower digested foods, like jacket potato [the skins], and pizza can often benefit from a dose of insulin later on......depending on your BG before the meal however, its more common to split the dose, as opposed to giving it all later, so some up front, the rest later on...... Just for information, myself and I know a lot other tend to inject/dose there insulin before the meal, sometimes up to 40 minutes, this helps with mid meal spiking.... Have you observed your blood sugars in between meals yet......? |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carb Counting Welcome to the forum......![]() My Fitness Pal website states that 100ml of the stuff contains 13g of carbs, and a nice 54 calories.... I think a medium one is about 445ml, so between 50 and 60 grams of carbs, depending on the flavour..... a quick Google should help you out if your going to be having them on a regular basis...... |

Topic: General Discussion / jacket potato salad meal just in case anyone has problems with thier bg readings after eating a jacket potato.i have previously always found that when i have had this for my evening meal the next morning i have woken up with bg above target and as aresult increased my ratio of q/a insulin.however what i found worked better was toi inject the q/a insuluin about an hour after i had finished eating to be a better solutuion. most other meals i still tend to inject straight after the meal but for some reason with the above this does not seem to be the case. if anyone else has this problem hopefully this might be some help.so now i use the same q/a ratio for this as i do for any other evening meal![]() cheers paulj |

Topic: General Discussion / Carbohydrates and Protein In "Think Like a Pancreas" by Gary Scheiner, he suggests the following:1) If you eat carbs and protein together, take insulin only for the carb portion. 2) If you have just carbs, then take insulin for the carb portion. 3) If you have protein but no carbs, then take insulin for the protein, but at a half dose. E.g, if you take 60g protein, then take insulin for it as if you were taking 30g carbs (60g / 2 = 30). The reason for this is that to keep the BGs stable, the body will convert some protein to blood sugar if it doesn't get its preferred fuel of carbs. However if there are carbs available to convert to blood sugar, then it won't bother converting protein as the process is not as efficient. |

Topic: General Discussion / Paleo - reduced carbs diet and type 1 Great info - will look it out = thanks.Day 2 and I'm kind of half and half, normal carby breakfast, mid morning crash then dried fruit, salad and nuts keeps me going till tea time. Not feeling too hungry either. See how we go. Carb free tea later and going to keep an eye on my BG insulin intake. Exercise regime to build in a few days time. |

Topic: General Discussion / Carbohydrates and Protein If you eat carbs and include some protein what happens BG wise? Same question for if there were just carbs and no protein?Sometimes I have a sandwich with paste on or sometimes I have some type of protein such as sliced meat (chicken/ham etc), cheese, tuna etc |

Topic: General Discussion / Paleo - reduced carbs diet and type 1 Hi do a search on the forums for 'my diabetes experiment' an excellent book that covers a lot of what it sounds like you want to do. It builds on DAFNE in that it goes further in areas such as weight loss and exercise. I found it very interesting although I have yet to do any of the 'experiments' in the book, there is a lot of info about the difference between burning fat to lose weight and burning sugar and muscle. It should also help with BG control as well. It's written by a diabetic so it has a lot of realism in. I.e what we want to do is not always what we actually do, it expects a degree of failure when you try to achieve the experiments. |

Topic: General Discussion / Paleo - reduced carbs diet and type 1 Been doing a bit of reading around this and being a bit if a diet fad cynic am tempted to tweak my diet in this direction for these reasons.. Reducing carb intake and therefore high BS spikes, reduced BG insulin (my BG insulin intake has been creeping up over the years), reducing the number of lows during the day (which I find can wipe me out for the rest of the day sometimes too). I'm wondering that to gradually reduce my processed carb intake (like bread, breakfast cereal) and compensate with more fruit, dried fruit and proteins instead (nuts, eggs). I think I eat pretty healthy and pretty much vegetarian by habit, my control is ok, I tend to run on the high side of normal for my hba1c but would be happier with middle normal here. I hate feeling like I'm on a roller coaster during the days sometimes and end up running higher than I'd like. I did Dafne in 2008 straight after my type 1 diagnosis but figure using diet to help even out the blood sugar pattern and be bit more focused on maintaining or even reducing insulin intake as a result would be good? I tend to correct a fair bit too, and also wonder if insulin can be bad for us too so am thinking diet tweak and less processed food (not that I eat a lot of this) can only be a good think?I'd be interested to hear opinions and thoughts on this Mike |

Topic: General Discussion / high and lows Did you miss a correction dose on Thursday at 1150? Your BGs went from 20.1 to 2.8 in less than 3 hours without any QA which is pretty amazing. If you are marathon training though, then perfectly possible :-)DP is really difficult to deal with as you have seen. The problem is that overnight, you are at your lowest insulin resistance so your BGs tend to drop easily. But when the rush of hormones kick in any time after 2 am, then suddenly your insulin resistance becomes really high and the active BI doesn't do such an effective job of keeping them in check. I can think of three options to try: 1) The easiest. Increase your night time BI. At bedtime, take QA to correct any high, but have a 2 CP snack without taking any QA for it. This might stop the hypo at 2-3 am, and the increased BI might take care of the DP. E.g. If you are 11.2 at bedtime, take 1 QA to bring it down to about 8, and have a 2CP snack without any extra QA. Have your BI + 20%. 2) A bit harder as it involves seeing your endocrinologist. In Think Like a Pancreas by Gary Scheiner, he suggests a possible strategy for DP is to use Lantus or Levemir for the morning BI and NPH insulin for the bedtime BI dose. NPH has a peak around 4-6 hours after taking it. I think it may still be likely that you would need a couple of CPs prior to bed to avoid the overnight hypo, but it may be better than a "peakless" BI like Lantus at dealing with the DP. 3) If you have been considering a pump, then it may be worth going for that option. Pumps do a pretty good job of handling DP because they can be programmed to deliver less insulin in the hours after midnight, but more around 3-4 am when the hormones get released. Hope this helps. |

Topic: General Discussion / Increasing Lantus (BI) Would you consider using the online Diary. I thought everyone had access to use the online diary. It would make your posts so much faster as no extra typing involved!Agree. My DAFNE consultant used to say make BI changes of 20%...so you are sure of the outcome. But agree that steady progress should be the way forward. Regards Garry |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / iPhone app redesign Personally an iPad version would be helpful to me as another means of data entry.Guess plenty of work is involved in the graphical aspect as suppose it would need be stand alone version, specific to apple viewers, to get away from Flash...which the rest of us would like to retain! Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / iPhone app redesign With the imminent announcement of iOS 7 within the next few weeks this is a great opportunity to apply some improvements to the iPhone app. I thought I'd create this post to capture what people want in a central location. My thoughts so far are:1. Change the home screen so that is more useful - what kind of information would people want to see at first glance? I was thinking of previous BG reading, averages, but would like suggestions. 2. iPad version of the app 3. Incorporate charts into the app for better analysis As always I'm open to suggestions so if there's something you'd really like to get in to the app then let us know. |

Topic: General Discussion / Increasing Lantus (BI) It really depends how sensitive you are to insulin. DAFNE recommends a 10-15% change in BI, and given it is your overnight that you want to change, I'd just go with a 2 unit change. We want to avoid any night time hypos, so slow and gradual is probably the best way to go.As novorapidboy26 says, you probably just want to increase the evening dose at this stage. |

Topic: General Discussion / Increasing Lantus (BI) The beauty of a split dose is you can adjust the AM and PM doses independently, so you would be looking to increase your evening dose.....in order to see a reduction of your waking numbers......remember to wait 2-3 days to see an accurate effect...... |

Topic: General Discussion / Increasing Lantus (BI) Increasing Lantus (BI)31/05/2013 6.2 - bedtime 11.1 - this morning for me 30/05/2013 7.7 - bedtime 18.2 - this morning for me 29/05/2013 no test - bedtime 14.5 - this morning for me 28/05/2013 9.7 - bedtime 10.5 - this morning for me So looking back at the last 3 days I'm thinking my BI needs increasing. I'm currently taking 20u split - 10u am & 10u pm & am undecided whether to increase by 2u (11u am & 11u pm) or 4u (12u am & 12u pm). What does anyone think please? |
