Topic: General Discussion / Exercise Thanks everyone for the advice and feedback. Most appreciated. I took a 4 day break from cycling and now back again for 2nd day today. I agree that it appears to need more frequent BG testing for the hours that follow the cycling activity, Yesterday the 15th was good but today not so, Extra CPs before exercise when BG was not high were not sufficient and obviously it needs BG tests after the exercise and CP top ups before hypo develops.I am sharing diary for last 3 days here. |

Topic: Site Development / Date/Timestamp of posts
Thanks Marke for the feedback. Obviously I have not thought of the technicalities in implementing such a change. I definitely would not want or expect the updated post to reposition itself in the list of posts and replies. Probably to implement would need a creation date and last updated date fields and the last updated date/time field used in the lists that show the most recent updates and how long ago that was. The post itself could show both dates creation and last update. I say all this without really knowing how the forum technology is developed and whether it is standard off-the-shelf technology with no scope for changes or bespoke application where one can add extra data fields. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Thinking of upgrading iphone 3GS to a Galaxy. Anyone got any views on this? Hi the app will work on both, in terms of the app you are unlikely to see much difference between the 3GS and a galaxy. The galaxy will be faster generally because it is newer but so will an iPhone 5. as the O2 Ad says there is always a better, faster phone around the corner. Its personal preference at the end of the day and I don't want to get into that debate![]() |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / iBGStar no they don't, however in future who knows. There have been suggestions but we haven't yet got to the 'discussion' stage. We will let you know if things move forward in this area. |

Topic: Site Development / Date/Timestamp of posts Ok, the first point. re-dating posts would potentially cause problems, if people comment on a post and the posts are re-ordered based on dates then the comments would be out of context. Ideally you shouldn't be editing posts very often, its more of an exception than a rule. If you want to update a post just post again referencing the original post. With regards to removing diary entries, I would say don't put them on in the first place, or at least think carefully about what you are putting on the forums for general consumption. Recently people seem to be posting large amounts of Diary entries in posts. Personally I think this overwhelms people and reduces the number of comments. We can look at allowing the removal of Diary entries from posts however as with the comments above if you do that then peoples subsequent posts on the Diary entries won't make sense if they are removed. |

Topic: General Discussion / Fundraising Walk for Diabetes I should also point out on Leighton's behalf that the DAFNE programme are trying to help with this by providing his team with DAFNE tee-shirts etc. I hope we can all get behind this effort. He is also helping to provide the online petition for Diabetes Structured Education at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk which seems to have stalled a bit at the moment![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / CareSens meters Hi, I cannot comment on the CareSense, I have seen one briefly but never used one. I think you suspicions are correct with regards to motives though.I attended a meeting organised by my local NHS people before Xmas regarding the selection of 'preferred' meters , this was promoted as being to make giving advice about them more straightforward if local Diabetes Nurses only had to work with a few. However it was also about cost reductions. For your info the CareSens strips cost £12.75 approx and the OneTouch Ultra strips cost around £15.07 so that is potentially a large saving. However in my area the 'rationalisation' of test strips was for Type 2's only and T1's are to continue using their current meters without change. Its not at all good that you are being asked to change your meter without a proper meeting and explanation of the reasons and if told if you are actually being given a choice about changing. Change is not necessarily a bad thing but it needs to be done in the right way. I know some areas of the country have just imposed change without consulting the local Diabetics, however that has not gone down very well and most areas seem to have learnt from this mistake. |

Topic: General Discussion / My BG (Trending) Diary - All Comments Welcomed Mon 13/05 - Wed 15/05Can anybody see if there are any trends I am missing? Have done today a meter control solution test - all was ok ![]() Also wondering of 2 possibilities: 1. changing BI back to once a day instead of a morning & evening dose - not really happy about this because I feel happy in myself atm doing the split dose 2. upping ratios slightly from 1:1 to 1:1.5 |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Help! Pregnant and type one Congratulations Aphriel![]() I am a Type 1 and have been for over 3 years and my daughter is nearly 6 mths old ![]() I was looked after very well by the diabetic team at my hospital (Glasgow Southern General) and had numerous scans and fortnightly then towards the end weekly checkups. I was always told that my Insulin requirements would increase rapidly especially in the last trimester but this never happened for me, if anything my insulin requirements plummeted in the last trimester and it's only now that they're almost the same pre-pregnancy. It sounds as though Addenbrookes will take good care of you ![]() All the very best and good luck! ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Tesco sandwich labelling I find it is a complete hit or miss with a lot of pre-packed food. Most of the time ASDA gives you both the amount of CHO per 100g and per pack but not always so I've been caught out before.![]() |

My aim is to promote DAFNE at events all over the place because I believe it shouldn’t have to be a postcode lottery it should be available to everyone. ALSO don’t forget to please Donate and let’s get more research into Diabetes so it can change of lives. Thank you http://www.justgiving.com/Leighton-Webb Or TEXT WEBB84 AND £AMOUNT TOO 70070 |

Topic: General Discussion / Travel Insurance I always use boots, never had problem and provides good cover. I think the only time you actually find how good a company is when you need to make claim, and if you were to use in worse case scenario it would most likely not be you dealing with them but your travel companion. So it's worth mentioning at time to give your travel insurance permission to speak to them due to data protection as the world gone crazy. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / excercise help Hi, I am a 39 old diabetic, who was diagnosed when 3 years old. I fortunately do not have any complications, just mild changes of someone who has had diabetes for my length of time. I completed DAFNE almost 3 years ago, and overall in better control but suffer from dawn phenomena which I control with corrections, and have had discussions with doctor and am happy to treat this way.I know this is a grey area but any advice or guidance would be appreciated. I visit the gym between 3-5 a week and suffer with recovery before my next visit and am really going through the motions on following visits, and building a bit of tone does seem impossible. I must point out that I am not looking to become the hulk or a throwback from the wrestler days of the 80's lol, just get a bit of tone and definition. I know supplements are widely frowned upon, and honestly I would not want to cause complications or issues but a little help without problems. I have found a whey protein which is advised to be taken before and after exercise and in morning, which I would only want to take after exercise to help recovery and not the stated 3 times a day. it contains for every 100g of dose which is taken with milk(which I would count) 25g protein, 1.2g carb & 0.75g sugar. what is your feelings on this as stated I would not want to cause kidney/problems or erratic blood tests. The other option which was advised by trainer in gym (limited diabetic knowledge) says that enomo acid tablets before and after training would not cause problems. I have searched web with mixed views on this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as stated without causing any problems short term or long term. Many thanks Dean ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Exercise I agree with edwards002 that getting fitter does tend to reduce the number of hypos after exercise. However, getting fitter also makes us more sensitive to insulin, so it can be a 2-edged sword.I have absolutely no idea, sorry, on how the removal of a pancreas would affect insulin sensitivity. The only thing I can suggest is more regular testing after exercise until you get an idea of when you are trending low, and can compensate with a couple of CPs. |

Topic: General Discussion / Freestyle InsuLinx Meter This is useful information. Apparently Freestyle InsuLinx is not the only meter with a problem, Lifescan One-Touch Verio IQ meters in UK/Ireland are also being recalled. Until deciding I will use my old Freestyle Freedom and continue to be higher than some recommend when driving. Thank you.Frank |

Topic: General Discussion / bosses Hi novorapidboi26,He said it to be undermining, he also said that we are prone to have mental illnesses and that they are well and truly deep in the brain and that we as diabetics wouldn't have a clue............................................................. And YES it was said because I have reported the bully........................................................... And he keeps on phoning me at home to make sure that I will turn up to meetings that no-one else knows about, this does not fill me with a good feeling as we well know we have a lot to deal with everyday as it is, it just seems that some have the wrong idea about us diabetics still............................................ |

Topic: General Discussion / Exercise
Dear SA2010 and Garry, sorry it has taken me a bit of time to get back to the forum and I see much water has passed under the bridge so to speak. Garry makes some good points wrt hand cleanliness and dryness. I must confess to being somewhat "microbiologically-disgusting". So hand washing tends to get a raw deal when it comes to blood testing. Garry is correct, though, in so far as this factor could disturb the precision of your results. I got told not to squeeze my finger in order to encourage blood drop formation when last at my dafne refresher course. So, many factors come in to play. If your (SA2010) slow-acting insulin dosage (Lantus?) has been serving you well, then best not to mess with it. Getting a secure base-line is the foundation for good treatment of Diabetes. This would mean that your QA insulin with meal prior to exercise is the key to hypo-avoidance. I had found -30%reduction of QA with meal good for everyday exercise. I mentioned that I thought I might need -50% reduction of my QA for severe exercise. Interestingly, the result of my first test showed that my adrenaline response (flight or fight) took over and my blood glucose values increased and ketones started to be generated with the severe exercise (Shock, horror!). On the next occasion I shall have to try a -40% reduction of my QA instead, since -50% was clearly over-doing it a bit. Dosage adjustment is touchy feely stuff. You (SA2010) mentioned that you used to exercise but operations and recovery therefrom have held you back. It is perfectly understandable that you will be sensitive to the effects of exercise. This sensitivity will reduce as you get fitter. Keep working away at it and I am sure your initial reservations will melt away. |
