Topic: General Discussion / Wonder Foods :)

Just to share a little bit of joy- iv found mini meringues in choc/vanilla flavour which are pure delights for when ur craving a bit of something sweet but ur BG wont allow a treat and u dont want to inject! Guilt free snacks- they are also incredibly low in calories and contain no fat! 25 mini meringues are 80 calories..so 1 or 2 are sinless! You can get them online from http://www.avidlite.co.uk/acatalog/Sugar-Free-Meringues--43g-tubs-ALQ037Z.html

(i wouldnt reccommend low-carb sugar free food cos its "empty calories" but these are beaut!)

Also- another great discovery is the WALDEN FARM food range- can get on Amazon. they do a sugar/carb/cholesterol/calorie/fat/sodium free range of products- some are disgusting (the peanut butter is vile) but the choc dip/pancake syrup are pretty good and nice addition to my morning porridge! The salad dressings are also pretty good..worth a wee look! google them!

ALSO- Shitake noodles. Most asian supermarkets have them. they are carb free and only 10 calories per portion. good for anyone on a low-carb diet/trying to lose weight. they are mainly soluble fibre- so fill u up and taste great in stirfrys etc! google them if u dont believe me such a food exists!!

And finally- splenda now do "flavours"... for adding to coffee, and I even use the hazelnut flavour for my porridge..mixed with a bit of choc dip-its a sugar free, carb free, calorie free "nutella" addition to my porridge! soo good.

Hope u enjoy these as much as me Smile

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Alcohol

I was just wondering if there is a general estimation for how much carbs one would need to eat in relation to one drink? When I go out I usually have a gin and slimline tonic or diet lemonade...my maximum would be about 4 (so 4 measures of gin)..problem is i never know how much to eat when I get home. I dont kno how many units a measure of alcohol (with no carbs) would roughly lower you? I find that when i wake up im either horrendously HIGH even after a moderate snack or im very low..but then my sugar rises dramatically around lunch time!? its rather frustrating!Another question is whether injecting more insulin (even if eating 1500 calories a day) will make u gain weight? I understand the general rule of thumb is that your overall insulin intake should be roughly 1/2 ur body weight in kg..even less? currently im taking nearly 2/3rds of my weight in insulin units and would like to know if this will cause weight gain?

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Download entries from site?

hi, any idea how many entries you are trying to download and are you on WiFi or just the phones 3G signal ? Simon is the expert on this but he is currently on holiday until the middle of the week. I have just added a single entry on the site and downloaded it to my phone and it did it pretty quickly but I am on WiFi.
I suspect it is more likely the number of entries it is trying to sync but as I say Simon is the expert and we will probably have to wait for him to look into it.

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE Myths

hey it is in plain english, you just don't recognise the two words in tandem Laughing
But seriously rebound hyperglycemia is the idea that if you have a hypo in the night that in the morning you wake up with high blood sugars because of the Hypo. This is now considered to be unlikely and the idea is to look for other reasons. Thats a quick take on it, I'm sure when they send us the info to put on the site it will be explained a lot better than my feeble attempt.

Topic: General Discussion / Monklands new name !

Due to the expansion of what was originally the Monklands DAFNE Centre we have had to rename it NHS Lanarkshire since it now consists of 3 hospitals not just Monklands. Apparently it was confusing new graduates have the centre called Monklands. So appologies and I hope it doesn't confuse people !

I use the short ones, i'm a new diabetic (July 11) quite frankly i was bricking it when told i was going to have to inject myself, but these needles are so thin and short, i just dont feel a thing, although there are a couple of really sensitive spots. But yes i am amazed at the technology, i can even go out with friends to restaurants and inject discreetly whilst sitting at the table.

Yes it is a bit odd excusing yourself from the table just as the food turns up. But I cannot get used to the idea of injecting through clothes, even with the longer needles I currently have. I need to see that I have actually got the needle in me before I inject for fear I would just be wasting the insulin. That would be all the more the case if I couldn't feel it!

sarahlou Thanks; it just goes to show how ignorant I am because I thought a longer needle might help get past the lumpy bits (which I also have at my "favourite" injection sites).

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE Myths

Further update on these discussions.....

Due to the amount of feedback to the original presentation on dafneonline, it has been decided by the DAFNE Executive that further information needs to be provided on each of the subject areas covered. As a result we can expect, over the coming months, more detail to be provided both to us as Graduates, but also to the HCPs (Health Care Professionals) who run the DAFNE courses. When the data becomes available (probably one topic at a time) we will get it loaded on dafneonline in the most suitable way. I have been told that the first topic to be covered will be Rebound Hyperglycemia.

Have you entered and saved your user name and password for entries? This is separate from the user name and password to log in, although it is the same user name and password. I'm afraid it's gone 2.00 a.m. and I can't remember the procedure, but I'm sure you'll sort it out.

Do you mean the username & password in settings on the iPhone, (DAFNE Online Credentials) if it is I have done that.

Thank You.

Topic: General Discussion / Panicking When Taking Hypos

Hi Laney,

I did the DAFNE course a week ago, although I have been following the general principles for about two years. I have been type 1 since 1978 and found a tremendous improvement after adopting the DAFNE principles. It has given me much better control and much greater flexibility in life. It is difficult to say whether the course itself has effected any change as I have a gut infection at the moment and the treatment for it is definitely affecting me, as is the infection itself.

I hope you get your panic problem sorted out soon. I think I was greatly helped to accept my diabetes by the fact that, when I was admitted to Stobhill to be stabilised, I was put in a general medical ward. I was the only diabetic there. For the week I was there, every night someone died. This convinced me that, if I was to be afflicted with something, diabetes was probably one of the best things to have. It can be managed, and that is even more true now under the DAFNE procedures.

Best wishes for the future,

Roger

Topic: General Discussion / new graduate today

my first day after the DAFNE course has been a bit strange Confused , i had a low before beakfast, a good blood four hours later, i had a late lunch but my bg had gone up by 4mmol in 2 hours?? I have done my correction with my lunch and will wait to see my dinner bg.

I have been hard on myself to get the right results but ended up getting upset when they were very high. I have struggled with the self disciplin but will do my best to look after myself, DAFNE has taught my not to expect to much too soon.
Its a new start for me and my diabetes and hope to get there in the end. DAFNE should be there for every type 1 and agree its a shame that funding makes it hard for people to get the support which is greatly needed to help to understand diabetes and how the insulin works with cp's.

I want to be in control of my diabetes not my diabetes controlling me. Laughing

Hi Samshine

Congrats on completing the course. I also completed the course yesterday aswell. I feel i will be more in control of my diabetes than it being in control of me Very Happy . Today is the 1st day of doing it dafne style without having the tutors around me and i feel i am doing well so far. I am also on levimir and have been on it for a year or so but i have now divided my units and take them 12 hours apart. Seems to be working well. I still cant get over that i can eat nearly anything aslong as i count it for insulin. I had cocopops for my breakfast the other morning for the first time in 13 years and they tasted gooooood Laughing

Topic: General Discussion / Panicking When Taking Hypos

Hi Roger,
I spoke to the Doctor at the Clinic yesterday and explained what I was feeling. He said it is something that you can experience and is normal however, we would need to see if I am feeling the panic because of my hypos or is it caused by something else(related tho). He said that I can be referred by my GP to a therapist instead of taking medication for the panics. I am going to see how things go now that I am doing it dafne style Smile .
I normally always feel shaky when a hypo is coming on but this is a different feeling i have been experiencing. When was it you done the dafne course? Do you feel it has helped and reduced any hypos or hypers?

Laney.

Topic: General Discussion / new graduate today

I also had my last day on the DAFNE course yesterday, in a different centre and have written a post in its forum. I found the course and the tutors to be very helpful and informative. By the end of the week my tests were pretty normal and I was very happy with that.

This morning my BG iwas high. I had worked late last night, writing, got a hypo of 3.3 and had eaten too many carbs to correct it. had also woken up late, a change from 5am to 10am so that threw the balance out too with the BI. I was shocked at how high it was, nonetheless. But I will try much harder not to let it happen again. Being back at home full-time where I had developed the bad habits, the course was helping me overcome, is a bit daunting - I know where the temptations lie. I should not have taken so many carbs for the mild hypo [had unerestimated the carb ratio at the time] or slept in so late. I will wait a couple of days before making considering making any changes to my BI, and have corrected the high BG with QA.

Thank God for DAFNE! In my 30 years of a diabetic I have never seen such an excellent and positive intervention in patient care. It is up to me now, and that is where I have to be self-disciplined about tests and ratios. Bought kitchen weighing scales, it arrived today, and am looking forward to be able to look at my diary without such high or low tests again Despite my bad result this morning - I do not feel as helpless and have more confidence in getting it back on track. I am also glad that this site is here. Don't have my centre code to show I am a graduate.

I hope it and the DAFNE course will be around and evolving for many years for the benefit of so many diabetics. I look forward to the day when the numbers of people with different kinds of diabetes is reversed. I think that DAFNE can and is making a big difference to the lives of Type 1 Diabetics and I aim to be one of them Very Happy

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Download entries from site?

Download entries from site not downloading to iPhone (the little circle continues to go round)

iPhone 3gs
OS - 5.01

The iPhone app is really great for when I'am out and about as it's always in my pocket and preferred over a paper diary. When I am at home/work I prefer to fill in the online diary as usually there is a PC in front of me and the iPhone could be on the docking station charging or playing music. I don't want to be filling in the diary entries twice so I would love to use the Download entries from site but nothing is happening, am I missing a setting somewhere?

Thank you.

Topic: General Discussion / Panicking When Taking Hypos

Hi Laney,

Just to clarify what I said earlier about panic being a psychological state. I too occasionaly shake almost uncontrollably when having a hypo, but this is not panic. This is a physical condition brought about by there being insufficient glucose in the system to enable the brain to give fine tuning instructions to the muscles and and to enable the muscles to move in a controlled fashion.

All the best,

Roger
