Since then I've had an 8.6 then 6.9 and now its 6.6!!!I was wondering if there is a 'one year on reunion' or something similar? Topic: General Discussion / Morning BG Advice There may be some liver action happening, even if most of the time it may go un noticed...........Do you get breakfast when you get up? Breaking the fast should tell the liver to stop.... What do you mean you spend all morning correcting? Do you not let the correction do its work? I mention this as you are risking hypo later due to insulin stacking, if your constantly injeting corrrections... |

Topic: General Discussion / Morning BG Advice Hi all, after a bit of advice really. My BG in morning is sporadic in one word, where either its perfectly in range, or sky high where I then spend most of the morning using corrections to get back in range. I have tried the 3am test and bg is pretty much in range. however it makes no difference when i get up so dont think dawn phenom. Does anybody have similar experiences?? cheers Deano |

Topic: General Discussion / Exercise classes and type1? Have to say, I stopped any regular exercise after I did the Dafne course - I couldn't get my head around it and I find their approach is very generalised. Before dafne I was doing triathlons and at one stage training for Ironman. Carbs are the base for any decent training - and this applies to all athletes. We were told to have (for sessions over 2 hours) the equivelant of your weight in grams of complex carbohydrate per hour. I had 60 gr/hr for long training or racing. shorter and easier than that, you shouldn't need any because you have glycogen stores. this of course doesn't hold true for us T1's necessarily - because we are balancing insulin etc.I dont think eating ever negates exercise (apart from calories) because the benefit to your body is more than just burning a few calories. I'm not a particularly good athlete so things take me a while. I did a 100km bike ride and consumed about 6ogr carbs/hr x 4 1/2 hours = 300 gr carbs. the race took me 4 1/2 hours. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Nokia N8 Thanks Marke, I understand, will work away with the hardcopy diary. Downloaded the Blood Sugar Diary by EFRAC on my phone but it is not ideal, so it is still easier to use the hardcopy diary.I have RA and Osteoarthritis in both hands and writing is not always easy, some days are worse than others. I use keyboards and buttons more easily during such times, hence my interest in the apps. I am also going to connect my 'One Touch Ultra 2' to my laptop and try and work out something from there. Hope to have a better blood testing device for this purpose soon, but hope is the operative word here. Thanks to everyone for their replies. |

Topic: General Discussion / skydiving. I used to skydive, and did many solo jumps - I just had to get my GP to sign a form to say he felt I was safe and I understood the risks, no problems. Although I had to stop when I smashed into the ground on winters day and destroyed my ankle, and then had it rebuilt. This was 15 years ago, but there was no ban on T1 diabetics doing it, I had previously paraglided in the Alps, and flown a glider - although for both of those I didn't bother to tell them, and they didn't ask. These days the ban on T1 flying small planes has been lifted, although we still can't fly commercially, and if we do obtain a licence, then a T1 has to have another qualified pilot sitting in the cockpit, again subject to your GP and doctor who is approved by the CAA saying you are fit - but it is not that hard, so a tandem jump is no problem - they should have goggles to protect eyes - who ever is jumping. I have to admit to almost getting a telling off from the professor of Orthopedics who put me back together - he hated charity jumpers as they cost the NHS far more, when it went wrong, than they ever raised, but as I did it for fun and as a hobby, he let me off |

I am concerned about having to eat more to stave off hypos. My carb intake is pretty low in the daytime as it is. Eating then negates the effects of exercise? I could do to know a good way of losing weight through diet and exercise. any more experiences or ideas. Thanks |

Topic: General Discussion / skydiving. Would like to do a tandem skydive to raise funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer but seem to recall being told that type 1 diabetics should not do such an activity because of the eyes.Has anyone any experiences please? |

Topic: General Discussion / Calorie Calculators....... There are websites and smartphone apps out there that calculate how many calories you need on a daily basis, taking into consideration age, height, weight, activity level.......But do they actually work, my results are always away above 2500, but I believe I need less than 2000 if I want to shift the weight......... |

Topic: General Discussion / new graduate today Can I suggest that you get your diabetes nurse to look at your injection sites and offer advice on suitable rotation of their use. This may be responsible for some of your adverse results.Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / new graduate today I never count cereal milk with precision, but with any average sized bowl of cereal I would also take 1 unit for the milk that goes in..............For full fat milk its 1 unit for half a pint, 284 ml............ As long as there is a pattern of at least 2 days of highs before dinner, assuming your carb count is right, normal absorption of insulin etc, then your lunch ratio may need increasing...... |

Topic: General Discussion / Sydney, Australia Register with My Diabetes My Way and you will be able to view your medical records where ever you are. You can let the Austrailian doctors look at them too if they have internet access in the clinic.Alan |

Topic: General Discussion / Sydney, Australia When do you arrive? Not living in Sydney but lived there and visit fairly frequently. It really does depend on where you live. You do not have to register. You simply rock up and ask to see someone. If you don't like that one you can change. Ask around your beighbourhood. I have found people are a little reluctant to recommend a single GP but are happy to recommend a clinic. Ask about awareness of diabetes specifically (they will all say that they are knowledgeable but the one I go to now was DAFNE unaware....I think he checked up after taking me on and over time we have built up a good relationship). Whenever i have changed GP I usually rock up and introduce myself taking prescriptions etc that I have been given before I actually need to see them for something specific . Most GP's here are happy to pass on "histories". I trust your current GP will give you a synopsis of your health history to bring with you! Good luck. Helen |

Topic: General Discussion / Exercise classes and type1? My hobby is Hill walking (Munros and Wainwrights) and at the moment I'm in training for The West Highland Way in early April. At the moment I do 2 sessions on the Cross Trainer, one 20 minute session first thing in the morning and a 30 minute session early evening, it's not long but it is intense. my BG can drop from 9 to 5 in one session, I don't always take a CP (depending how high my BG is) but if I do its no more than 2 CP. I done a 15,5 mile walk last sunday, my bed time BG was 9.5 but 3 hours later I was Hypo. This Saturday I will be doing a 20 mile hike around Arrachor, I will reduce my QA by half that day to see how I get on after the walk. I find the exercise on the Cross Trainer is helping my BG along with DAFNE. I am also on Lantus, have been for about 9 years but can't say I have gained weight because of it, a heathy diet and exercise will be good for you and your diabetes. I recommend everyone do a little daily exercise, you will be surprised how much it helps your BG Alan |

Topic: General Discussion / new graduate today
Hi to all, I have been testing before meals makeing sure i have left the 4-5 hours after my last injection but my dinner time bg has gone mad my bg at lunch was 9.3 then at dinner 5 hous later it was 17.6??? The last 3 days my bg has gradually got high before dinner, but ive had 2 hypos 2 hours after dinner and last night it was 14.7 before bed. im picking up the accu chek expert blood machine tomorrow from the hosp so hope this will help but am going to speak to my diabetes nurse as im feeling a bit lost at the mo. I rechecked my breakfast today as wasnt 100% sure id counted it right in my dafne book it says milk 200ml = 1, then in the carb and cals book which the hosp gave me, it says 160ml of milk is7. With my breakfast ive had 160ml and counted it as 1, is this right? Samantha |

Topic: General Discussion / Sydney, Australia Hi everybody,After many trials and tribulations me and my partner have secured a visa to move to Sydney! Are there any sydney-siders on here that can recommend good GPs/consultants to register with and any tips from anyone that has emigrated regrading prescriptions and things? I've asked my GP and he said he's only going to give me one months supply to take with me Thanks Lee |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Nokia N8 Just to clear up a few things having just noticed this thread. Simon IS the site admin and the iPhone app developer, a guy with many talents ( except security of course, he needs me for thatWith regard to the development of versions of the app for other phones, we would like to do it but its a question time and resources. All of us have 'day' jobs and other stuff to do as well as DAFNEOnline. If anyone with the necessary expertise volunteers we are happy to work with them to produce an app, however at the moment we don't have time to do it ourselves. You can contact any of us via the Message Box system on the right-hand menu or by emailing [email protected] we always try to respond to questions although we may not always give the answer you want. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Fitting when hypo Puts in perspective some of the moans we have about being Diabetics. I would imagine having fits all the time is really not a pleasant experience. I would have thought in an ideal world they would have given you a Continuous Blood Glucose Monitor so you could maybe work out the 'tipping' point that causes you to fit. Generally most of us do not fit when hypo but some I guess are particularly unlucky and their bodies are more sensitive to low blood sugar and the effects it has. I guess you also get the double-whammy of a fit causing you to expend a lot of energy meaning you need more carbs to get your BG back up and to keep it up.Thanks for sharing your experiences anyway, if nothing else it shows people that they are not alone in suffering a problem like fits and hypos |
