Topic: General Discussion / no carb/sugar free drinks

To novorapidboi26.

I don't put sugar in my home made stock. However I have no idea why there is sugar in a stock cube. All the ones I have have it in. Confused

Topic: General Discussion / Panicking When Taking Hypos

Hi Elaine,

Its perfectly normal to get panicky when having a hypo..............

I suppose it all depends on how new you are and your experience with having them, how well your control is and the nature of the hypo [slow onset and expected, with better control, quickly and unexpected with less controlled], and obviously your surroundings and whether you have quick acting sugar to hand...........

I never carried hypo resolve with me before DAFNE, I never needed to, I was always high...............Now I will never leave the house alone without it.......

I have certainly had a few panicky times when I have had an alcohol induced hypo, as it came really quickly, which usually comes with more extreme symptoms, like blurred vision and dizziness............. Shocked

Really?, this sounds interesting, why would you put sugar in vegetable stock?

Topic: General Discussion / Panicking When Taking Hypos

Hi, Always feel panicky when having hypo. I use it as one of my warning signals. Do a BM test and then 1 line/10g fast Carbs.

Just an aside. Do you shake when you are hypo and panicky? I do and couldn't get the bloomin test strip in the Blood monitor. I now use a cassette based monitor with no strips as such.

All the best!

Just one point Laney, I'm not really familiar with fruit juices but I know that people often assume they are carb free. This is not necessarily so, check carefully.

Topic: General Discussion / Panicking When Taking Hypos

Experiencing panic when suffering a loss of control is a common feature of life, let alone diabetes! This is more to do with an individual's psychological makeup than anything else and needs looking at from that point of view. If you are a new diabetic it is perfectly understandable and will subside as you become more familiar with hypos and what works for you. Make sure you always have rapid acting glucose to hand. This is best in liquid form, e.g. Lucozade or Tesco's tropical fruit drink. The latter is 4 cp's per 330ml bottle. These will correct most hypos in no time and will make you feel much more confident about handling the situation. Make sure the people around you, your family, friends and colleagues, know what to do if you are hypo. Don't worry about their attitude, you have a life-threatening condition, they probably don't! Those who matter won't mind, those who mind don't matter.
Keep your chin up! Best of luck.
Roger

Topic: General Discussion / My mornings have gone to pot

Hi. You say that your BG is 6.5 at 8am, but what is it at 5am? What's your BG like before bed? It's possible that you could be having hypos at 3am, and your BG is bouncing back mid morning. Are you checking at 3am?

Thats what were here for.................

Waking is a problem for lots if not all folk, me too....................the old Dawn Phenomenon is an irritating beast, but it can be tamed.........

Have you tested your overnight BI dose recently, ie no carbs/insulin/correction before bed.............

The Dawn Phenomenon can be confirmed with 3 am tests, have you don this recently.......

Spontaneous high BG readings together with problems with the gut could be related, possible digestive problems, gastoparesis maybe..............

Were specifically do your BG problems lie at the minute, if there is anywhere specific.................?

Hard to say at the moment - just get high BS for no apparent reason at times - is generally high on waking too. Sure it's the BI, but I seem to very insulin-sensitive and a change of just one unit leads to hypos. Am on Levemir split dose of 12 and 6 units. Thanks for all your interest and help Smile

Autonomic neuropathy can effect the digestive system. From what ive read it more commonly causes constipation. This is a quote from NIDDK (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.) and NIDC "while nerve damage to the bowels can cause constipation alternating with frequent, uncontrolled diarrhea, especially at night." These are both US health agencies. http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/neuropathies Try this link for more info. Its a start at least. Also could it be that your diabetes is not the cause? Look into I.B.S. aswell.

Thanks for that - am hoping it's not IBS - in fact was hoping for e-coli or similar bug to get rid of!!
