Topic: General Discussion / Exercise classes and type1? I do martial arts training once a week for 2 hours.............so light to moderate, sometimes intense activity levels................Its Wing Chun Kung Fu, so not intense as Thai Boxing for example.......... I need to do more though, to lose some weight, but I just cant get motivated to go to a gym. I have started extending the dog walking time and choosing up hill routes...........and of course cutting calories......... Sorry, I am rambling......... Regarding your Lantus, I wouldn't say for sure its related............ Is your Lantus dose significantly more than your Insulatard? If so, I would do some basal testing......... |

Topic: General Discussion / Excercise or Depleted Insulin Thank you all for your suggestions, they are all valid........It could be a hormonal response to the activity, or the fact I had no QA insulin on board, however my muscles would then use energy from their stores, does this process need insulin? I would assume not..... Its also possible I went low first, but I should of felt it, no? There was no QA in my system at dinner time, so dont know if I could of went low first...... So many possibilities............ ![]() Will put the following day up shortly.......... ![]() |

Hi. I am wondering what type of exercise you all do? I don't have a specific exercise regime, do you and what is it? and how do you find it? I could do to lose a few (quite a few) pounds +. I don't know if this is related but was put on Lantus a year ago from Insulatard and gained 2 1/2 stone. Bloods no better or worse than before. Thanks. |

Topic: General Discussion / Excercise or Depleted Insulin not sure if I'm reading it right but it looks like you had a BG of 4.2 and did your 2 hours exercicise on that - is that right? Maybe you went hypo and your glycogen stores kicked in so it read as 14.7? So 14.7 is a post hypo rebound? |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carb counting help!!! As everyone says, its a matter of observation, memory and using the tools available. However the real beauty of DAFNE is the ability to correct later if you get it "wrong", without getting into the yo-yo ing cycle that many of us used to when (poorly) educated guesswork was the only thing available. Once you get your head round this it becomes possible to relax a bit when eating out, knowing that you can have a properly calculated next meal and quickly get back on track. If you're eating at one of the many chains of eating establishments its worth checking their website before you go. Many have nutritional info for their products, and you can print these off and take them with you.Stew |

Hi Novorapidboi, I play a bit of 5aside(Im know beckham lol) and gym(or arnie lol), and have found blood test increases if no QA remaining in system. What I have been doing and seems to work is have 2cp before excercising and 1 unit of QA, which was difficult to get head round injection before excercising and it seems to work. But I have to watch results for remainder of day as blood tests do tend to drop while body recovering. |

Topic: General Discussion / Excercise or Depleted Insulin Alan has cleared this kind of thing up for me in the past.I have gone out whilst high and exercised, trying to knock it back and expecting to find my BG well down. But found it going up..... BG BE 13.2 AE 13.4 and was puzzled by my personal experience. The logic seems sound. Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Excercise or Depleted Insulin My Blood Sugar always goes up when I go swimming before breakfast - last week, for instance, my BS was 5.6 before swimming (half an hour's worth) and it was 8.9 afterwards. This is not a one-off, it's consistently like this. I queried this with my HCP and he said that it was probably caused by the act of going to the swimming baths and meeting other people - which then causes the release of adrenaline, which in turn leads to the release of glucagon from the liver - hence the increase in BGs.If you went to a gym for your exercise, perhaps it was the same for you. |

Topic: General Discussion / Excercise or Depleted Insulin I had a carb free dinner on the 6th [Turkey Breast & Vegetables]........Then commenced light/moderate activity over a period of 2 hours at 19:30pm.... When I returned home and tested I was 14.7... Could this be my Levemir dose running out? A result of the activity and no insulin? Only one days results I know, but what would be your initial thoughts.....? I take my evening dose of Levemir later about 21:30 - 22:00 to combat DP...........should I consider taking it with dinner on nights of activity....... |

Topic: General Discussion / grace1961 Basically it has to be the podiatry folk that look at your feet, as opposed to your DSN, however, they should be more than happy to refer you and get you an appointment..............are the feet folk in the same clinic? How is your foot doing with the medication you have been given? Is it clearing up? If it is then all your podiatrist will say is keep doing what you are doing...........healing on the feet is the highest priority to them........ Dont stop trying to get seen though........... ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / feet You should check with your diabetic nurse or local PALS team ( should be a link on your PCT's website) how you get an appointment with your local Diabetes Chiropody team. They should be more than happy to see you and check your feet. It most likely has nothing to do with your Diabetes however because we are at 'increased' risk of foot problems it is better to get it checked out by an expert. My local chiropody team has always been keen to emphasise thst you should see them if you are in any doubt, better to waste their time with an unnecessary appointment than ignore a problem that could become more serious if left untreated. It is part of the 'standard' treatment you should receive as a Diabetic from yuor local Diabetes Team, so make sure you do ! |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Alcohol I think the weight gain that comes with good control is that insulin is an anabolic hormone and it not just involved in glucose metabolism but also fat and protein metabolism. It allows the body to utilise and store fat and insulin also counteracts the actions of glucagon (if insulin is the abundant hormone) so it stops your body then breaking down that stored fat as an energy source. This is because in people who are not diabetic, a high insulin level accompanies eating, when food is being taken in and the body should theoretically not need to break down stored fat as it will use the fuel from the meal you are just eating. That is why diabetics who get good control may notice a gain in weight, even if they eat healthy amounts, it is relative to the effects of insulin 'deficiency' and hyperglycaemia the body previously experienced with the poorer control. They body is experiencing near normal glucose and insulin levels during good control compared to periods of poor control. I think exercise and a healthy diet is the only way to ensure that weight gain does not become a huge problem i.e. pushing your BMI into dangerous ranges or affecting any other aspects of your health. I have never heard of a ratio of insulin to body weight so I am not sure if your insulin dose would specifically cause weight gain. |

Topic: General Discussion / New Needles DRS, no problem, just what I've been told and from experience. I hope it explains what your doctor meant by you needing less insulin. I've got a lumpy injection sites that you can see quite clearly from using certain ones too much for injections. I've been told if I leave it alone the lumps will eventually go away. |

Topic: General Discussion / New Needles Injecting through clothing is not recommended - you could be getting fibres inside the injection site, plus you don't know how sterile the clothing you're injecting through is. Also, if you use the needle more than once, you are blunting it for the next injection. |
