Topic: General Discussion / Exercise classes and type1?

I am concerned about having to eat more to stave off hypos. My carb intake is pretty low in the daytime as it is. Eating then negates the effects of exercise? I could do to know a good way of losing weight through diet and exercise. any more experiences or ideas. Thanks

Topic: General Discussion / skydiving.

Would like to do a tandem skydive to raise funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer but seem to recall being told that type 1 diabetics should not do such an activity because of the eyes.
Has anyone any experiences please?

Topic: General Discussion / Calorie Calculators.......

There are websites and smartphone apps out there that calculate how many calories you need on a daily basis, taking into consideration age, height, weight, activity level.......

But do they actually work, my results are always away above 2500, but I believe I need less than 2000 if I want to shift the weight.........

Can I suggest that you get your diabetes nurse to look at your injection sites and offer advice on suitable rotation of their use. This may be responsible for some of your adverse results.

I never count cereal milk with precision, but with any average sized bowl of cereal I would also take 1 unit for the milk that goes in..............

For full fat milk its 1 unit for half a pint, 284 ml............

As long as there is a pattern of at least 2 days of highs before dinner, assuming your carb count is right, normal absorption of insulin etc, then your lunch ratio may need increasing...... Wink

Register with My Diabetes My Way and you will be able to view your medical records where ever you are. You can let the Austrailian doctors look at them too if they have internet access in the clinic.

When do you arrive? Not living in Sydney but lived there and visit fairly frequently.

It really does depend on where you live. You do not have to register. You simply rock up and ask to see someone. If you don't like that one you can change. Ask around your beighbourhood. I have found people are a little reluctant to recommend a single GP but are happy to recommend a clinic. Ask about awareness of diabetes specifically (they will all say that they are knowledgeable but the one I go to now was DAFNE unaware....I think he checked up after taking me on and over time we have built up a good relationship). Whenever i have changed GP I usually rock up and introduce myself taking prescriptions etc that I have been given before I actually need to see them for something specific . Most GP's here are happy to pass on "histories". I trust your current GP will give you a synopsis of your health history to bring with you! Good luck. Helen

Topic: General Discussion / Exercise classes and type1?

My hobby is Hill walking (Munros and Wainwrights) and at the moment I'm in training for The West Highland Way in early April.

At the moment I do 2 sessions on the Cross Trainer, one 20 minute session first thing in the morning and a 30 minute session early evening, it's not long but it is intense. my BG can drop from 9 to 5 in one session, I don't always take a CP (depending how high my BG is) but if I do its no more than 2 CP.

I done a 15,5 mile walk last sunday, my bed time BG was 9.5 but 3 hours later I was Hypo. This Saturday I will be doing a 20 mile hike around Arrachor, I will reduce my QA by half that day to see how I get on after the walk.

I find the exercise on the Cross Trainer is helping my BG along with DAFNE.

I am also on Lantus, have been for about 9 years but can't say I have gained weight because of it, a heathy diet and exercise will be good for you and your diabetes.

I recommend everyone do a little daily exercise, you will be surprised how much it helps your BG

Take your time.
Don't be hard on yourself.
We all peak out after meals. Try to focus on the result before the next meal - not on the results in between as they will almost always be above range...If they are not you might have a hypo before your next meal.
As you mentioned this is the time to be disciplined, take a long term view of things and only change one thing at a time to ensure you fully understand the effect of any change made.
Depending upon the insulin types that you use, you will find that the rate of Blood Glucose reduction per hour....if you want to think of it like that...varies with time of day, last BG, work load, stress and many more things besides Confused
Introduce too many variables....into the the complex machine that is us....and you will find it difficult to understand what is going on.

Hi to all,
I have been testing before meals makeing sure i have left the 4-5 hours after my last injection but my dinner time bg has gone mad my bg at lunch was 9.3 then at dinner 5 hous later it was 17.6??? The last 3 days my bg has gradually got high before dinner, but ive had 2 hypos 2 hours after dinner and last night it was 14.7 before bed.

im picking up the accu chek expert blood machine tomorrow from the hosp so hope this will help but am going to speak to my diabetes nurse as im feeling a bit lost at the mo.
I rechecked my breakfast today as wasnt 100% sure id counted it right in my dafne book it says milk 200ml = 1, then in the carb and cals book which the hosp gave me, it says 160ml of milk is7. With my breakfast ive had 160ml and counted it as 1, is this right?

Hi everybody,

After many trials and tribulations me and my partner have secured a visa to move to Sydney!

Are there any sydney-siders on here that can recommend good GPs/consultants to register with and any tips from anyone that has emigrated regrading prescriptions and things? I've asked my GP and he said he's only going to give me one months supply to take with me Sad

Thanks

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Nokia N8

Just to clear up a few things having just noticed this thread. Simon IS the site admin and the iPhone app developer, a guy with many talents ( except security of course, he needs me for that Very Happy ). The android app was very kindly developed by Keith Clarke, who realised thay I was never going to get it done and took it on himself. He did a very good job I believe, although I don't have an android phone.
With regard to the development of versions of the app for other phones, we would like to do it but its a question time and resources. All of us have 'day' jobs and other stuff to do as well as DAFNEOnline. If anyone with the necessary expertise volunteers we are happy to work with them to produce an app, however at the moment we don't have time to do it ourselves.
You can contact any of us via the Message Box system on the right-hand menu or by emailing [email protected] we always try to respond to questions although we may not always give the answer you want.

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Fitting when hypo

Puts in perspective some of the moans we have about being Diabetics. I would imagine having fits all the time is really not a pleasant experience. I would have thought in an ideal world they would have given you a Continuous Blood Glucose Monitor so you could maybe work out the 'tipping' point that causes you to fit. Generally most of us do not fit when hypo but some I guess are particularly unlucky and their bodies are more sensitive to low blood sugar and the effects it has. I guess you also get the double-whammy of a fit causing you to expend a lot of energy meaning you need more carbs to get your BG back up and to keep it up.
Thanks for sharing your experiences anyway, if nothing else it shows people that they are not alone in suffering a problem like fits and hypos

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carb counting help!!!

at the moment it is unlikely there will be an app that runs on a Nokia. You can however access the mobile version of the site on your phone if it has internet access. This is a cut down version of the site designed to run on mobile phones. Obviously the downside is you need internet access to use it. If there is anyone out there that wants to develop a Java based app that will run on phones like this, we would of course be interested in hearing from them Laughing

Hi my names Billie I have been graduate since early January. It's the best course I ever did even tho over a month I still get high readings I don't feel terrified each time I look at my BG machine. I now fully understand what is wrong with me and have the tools to help me try to control what,s going on in my body lol. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes in 2008 then went on to learn I was type1 I won't lie it was total life changer, I think I was in denial for a long while. But there was no change over from midwife to doc so was really having hard time was hospitalised 3 times last year due to ketois that when I was noticed as needing help. That's how I ended up doing DAFNE, I personally believe it should be compulsory for all type ones.
I truly believe without DAFNE I would have continued to be hospitalised and would never have learnt to control the disease it would have consumed me eventually.
Keeping on this positive new road and will keep trying my best.
Good luck to all

Topic: General Discussion / Excercise or Depleted Insulin

the lows are definately caused by the exercise. generally the effects of exercise will be felt for 24 hours afterwards. Maybe more, maybe less as we are all different. It is basically the fact that your muscles etc are still using more energy ( from blood sugar) than normal. I always had to lower my QA the morning after an evening at the gym, and sometimes my BI depended on the level of exercise. Sadly I saved money by not going to the gym and now just cycle as its generally cheaper ;-)
I think its also true that most exercise results in adrenaline being released which is a hormone that primes the body for action. Any 'action' generally requires more 'energy' than resting so more sugar in the blood to provide the energy. Sadly being diabetic means you don't get the corresponding insulin boost to process this blood sugar. However injecting extra insulin is also potentially dangerous, so probably best to do exercise when there is some QA in the blood but not injected specially rather as a tail off from a previous meal. Of course the difficulty is the only way to work out the best solution for each individual is by trial and error. Still nobody said being Diabetic would be easy even with DAFNE Very Happy
I would also be careful about moving your Levemir to that much earlier. Generally having Levemir before bed and when you get up is it gives you a greater overlap in the morning when generally your insulin requirements tend to be higher. This is due to dawn phenomenon type effects if not the full blown thing. Instead you would be more likely to get an overlap in the evening. This might have the effect you require, but could also leave you higher in the morning. All could's of course because we are react differently.

Sorry it seems that in Scotland you don't have a PALS service Sad There is a group in Scotland called Local Health Council which has a wonderful website full of marketing and hollow promises but no real substance. I also tried googling for podiatry and diabetes in Glasgow and got very little, more than I little worrying. Do you not have Podiatrists who are also Diabetes experts in Scotland ?? There is supposed to be a national Diabetes Framework and number of 'standards' that PCT's are suposed to meet and footcare should be amongst these. I would agree with Novarapidboi surely your Diabetes team can give you a number for the podiatrist, how can they not have one when its a basic part of diabetes care. If any of our other graduates from Glasgow have any ideas please let us know, this is an unacceptable situation.

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Fitting when hypo

Hi,
I am a 28 year old woman who has been diagnosed since 1995 (I was 12).

While in my mid teens I had a brace fiitted to my teeth. About a year later, I started having fits, especially at night time. I used to wake up with a bad headache, achey ribs, a ripped up mouth and blood everywhere. My parents and the dentist thought I was rubbing my tongue against my brace in my sleep, causing it to rip into my tongue and cheeks.
The dentist removed the brace and we thought that was the end of it.

A couple of weeks later, my mum heard me banging my head against the wall during the night and realised I was having a fit.
I went to hospital, and was told it was due to my bloods dropping too low while I was asleep. They fiddled with my insulins and told me to eat before I went to sleep.
This seemed to fix it....at least for a while.

I have been having fits and bad reactions to hypos now for over 10 years and what I have learnt is the following things can increase the risk of a hypo/fit. This list isn't exhaustive, it is just the current things I have noticed over the years. A change in hormones (menstrual cycle etc), starting new medicines, weight gain and weight loss, unplanned activity and stress all affect my diabetes and can cause me to have a fit.

I can have a fit without realising I am hypo and they happen during the day and the night. MY GP, DSN and consultant do not know how to treat my fits and hypos successfully and always tell me to "record my bloods constantly, log everything including what I eat and where I inject and they will review it in a month". This is never helpful because that doesn't give me any suggestions of ways to deal with the fits now, sigh and at the reviews just tell me...they don't know why I keep having them.
I am currently in a stage of having 2-3 fits and 3-4 bad hypos each week and am waiting to see my DSN and GP as I can not work out what the causes are. I am hoping to have a new thing to add to my list soon Rolling Eyes

If you seem to be having them regularly, I would suggest that you always have some hypo food by your bed that you do not have to chew (orange juice, coke, lucozade, hypogel) and always carry something like this with you. I have a little tuck-shop in my desk at work of orange juice, lucozade and biscuits (to keep my BM up once I am out of hypo). My work colleagues and all of my family know how to recognise and deal with my hypos and fits and I would suggest explaining the best ways to deal with your hypos/fits to people who are around you. Everyone is different and has different reactions to hypos.

Hypos/fits can be very scary for others around you, especially if they do not know how to help you but being prepared and treating them like bad hypos (which they basically are) is the best way forward.

I hope this information is of use to anyone out there who is struggling with hypo/fits.
Take care Maradie xx

I went on the iPhone apps website to look at Simon Fisher's app and there was a link for his site, when I clicked on it I was brought back here to the dafneonline site. So he must be here somewhere or perhaps he no longer logs in. I know he can't adapt the app for all phones, and Apple often insists on exclusive rights, but it is also on the android phones. Nokia has many users, the Symbian 3 on the Nokia N8 is very interesting for developers . Anyway, heard many good reviews from people who use it and any thing that helps with diabetic management is a plus. Thanks again.

Topic: General Discussion / Excercise or Depleted Insulin

As you can see my problem with rising blood sugar has been taken over by lows throughout yesterday and this morning............

Is this because of my muscles replenishing, or is it down to a high ratio in the evening?

The possibility my Levemir is running out by the time 21:00 comes is also possible...........[been working up until now]......

If today is the same, I think I will try taking my Levemir with dinner, then run that for a few days.............

However all this bother may be down to the effects of Monday nights activity, and could wear off at the end of today, returning everything to normal.......

Any discussions/comments welcome............
