Topic: General Discussion / new graduate today Congratulations, and welcome to the forum.....Sound advice from Roger there. I am constantly learning new things about my diabetic control, however still dont have perfect control..................... Levemir is much more felxible, and although everyone is different, I believe everyone should be on it...............[Levemire Lover.... I felt the same as you after the course, I just couldnt believe how I was just letting life pass by with no clue about my diabetes, it will never be the same after DAFNE.............and its a shame funding cuts are cutting people out of getting the basic education they deserve........... I look forward to hearing from you.............. |

Topic: General Discussion / new graduate today Congratulations!Don't be in a rush to get things perfect, they probably never will be. Just keep looking for patterns and making adjustments (one at a time, with two days minimum in between) and the improvement you have noticed will continue, and get better. Well done, and the best of luck. Roger |

Topic: General Discussion / new graduate today Hi, i had the last day of the DAFNE course today and am so pleased i went. After many years of abusing my diabetes its time to start again and control my diabetes.Cant believe i can eat anything now (with the right insulin) I thought the course was great, got new needles, have been taken off of lantus and put onto levemir twice a day which seems to be doing the job, although ive had quite a few hypos (which i hate). Hopefully things will settle down and i will be in control for the first time in nearly 30 years. |

Topic: General Discussion / Panicking When Taking Hypos Thanks everyone for the feedback. I have had diabetes since i was 13 and i am now 29. I have just recently started experiencing panic attacks when i am hypoing. Its frustrating as i have never experienced anything like this before. I thought it would have been a good question to ask as i don't know anyone else with type 1 and its good to get oter peoples views that have diabetes.i completed the dafne course today and hoping that my hypos are very minimum now. |

Digging a hole for myself now. When we were kids my mum used to make us veggi stock for bonfire night. She'd kid us it was soup. A small stock cube is not the same but only 0.9 carbs is not too bad and you get a couple of cups out of it. other ideas, fruit teas nettle tea or a dry mulled wine. Ok hole definitely deeper. |

Topic: General Discussion / no carb/sugar free drinks To novorapidboi26.I don't put sugar in my home made stock. However I have no idea why there is sugar in a stock cube. All the ones I have have it in. |

Topic: General Discussion / Panicking When Taking Hypos Hi Elaine,Its perfectly normal to get panicky when having a hypo.............. I suppose it all depends on how new you are and your experience with having them, how well your control is and the nature of the hypo [slow onset and expected, with better control, quickly and unexpected with less controlled], and obviously your surroundings and whether you have quick acting sugar to hand........... I never carried hypo resolve with me before DAFNE, I never needed to, I was always high...............Now I will never leave the house alone without it....... I have certainly had a few panicky times when I have had an alcohol induced hypo, as it came really quickly, which usually comes with more extreme symptoms, like blurred vision and dizziness............. |

Topic: General Discussion / Panicking When Taking Hypos Hi, Always feel panicky when having hypo. I use it as one of my warning signals. Do a BM test and then 1 line/10g fast Carbs.Just an aside. Do you shake when you are hypo and panicky? I do and couldn't get the bloomin test strip in the Blood monitor. I now use a cassette based monitor with no strips as such. All the best! |

Topic: General Discussion / no carb/sugar free drinks I think with diluted cordials, if they sugar free the carbs are negligible if exist at all................But best to check as Roger says.............. |

Just one point Laney, I'm not really familiar with fruit juices but I know that people often assume they are carb free. This is not necessarily so, check carefully. |

Topic: General Discussion / Panicking When Taking Hypos Experiencing panic when suffering a loss of control is a common feature of life, let alone diabetes! This is more to do with an individual's psychological makeup than anything else and needs looking at from that point of view. If you are a new diabetic it is perfectly understandable and will subside as you become more familiar with hypos and what works for you. Make sure you always have rapid acting glucose to hand. This is best in liquid form, e.g. Lucozade or Tesco's tropical fruit drink. The latter is 4 cp's per 330ml bottle. These will correct most hypos in no time and will make you feel much more confident about handling the situation. Make sure the people around you, your family, friends and colleagues, know what to do if you are hypo. Don't worry about their attitude, you have a life-threatening condition, they probably don't! Those who matter won't mind, those who mind don't matter.Keep your chin up! Best of luck. Roger |
