Topic: General Discussion / Spare diabetes kit I left my diabetes kit bag behind when visiting someone and had to make do for a couple of days with what I happened to have at home. The battery in my spare test meter was flat and I didn't have the right ones in the house. I only had one injection pen which I had to swap between slow and fast acting insulins as required. The experience made me realize how comfortable I am in my routine and how difficult it becomes when that routine is disrupted. So I am now making sure I have a spare set of everything I need, that my batteries are ok and are the type I have to hand.I'm simply sharing my experience so that others might benefit. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / high bloods tiny carbs DAFNE is to allow you to eat what you like when you like, so i would keep persevering with it and you seem to have insulin: carb ratios calculated. Like others have said here the main problem must be your background insulin as you are still injecting quick acting throughout the day. I struggle to adjust for exercise too but if we keep experimenting will we end up knowing what works![]() |

Topic: Site Development / reply to topic box. Hi thebatoutofhull,1. Yep - we're currently working on updating the look and feel of the site, and with this we will be moving the popup box to always be onscreen under the list of posts, similar to other forums. 2. Can do this - although it will be a bit of work as we'll have to make it optional; some people may want to adhere strictly to the DAFNE targets. Thanks, Simon |

Topic: Site Development / reply to topic box. Both good points..................I hope they can be achieved....... Your first point has bugged me forever, in other forums I visit the reply box appears at the top with the previous posts, in order of most recent, down below......... A way round this I suppose is to quote them, then delete the code and text body when finished........... ![]() |

Topic: Site Development / reply to topic box. Hello. Could you help?1/When I click on the 'reply to topic' box in red at the bottom right of a forum post a box appears. This box can cover the very last persons post up. When I wish to refer to this post, I can not. Could you allow a little room under the last posting so I can use the right scroll bar to lift the post above the reply box please. 2/I love the blood glucose target chart. It is really quick and simple to understand. However my GP thought I was very high a lot of the time as many of my readings were in the red- but only slightly. Would it be possible to add an orange section for results slightly over the threshold. say between 7.5 and 10. I had a BM of 7.8 the other day and I might as well have been 15+ in the mind of my GP. They don't have a lot of time and don't want to look at lots of graphs. Thank you. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / high bloods tiny carbs Hi,Firstly Jenny I am sorry for the name mix up. Your experience is very valuable to me as I can see many parallels. novorapidboi26, I could push up my BI a little as you suggest. As you say though my morning bloods are on target. I use Lantus which lasts 18hrs+. I overlap it in the morning. If I am having DPhn I was hoping this would help. If the truth be known my old insulin Insulatard did a brilliant job throughout the day. It had a bump which unbeknown to me at the time helped keep the mid morning BG rise in check. Thanks for advice. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Pancake Day Welcome to the Forum Nicky.........Purely on weight really................ As each one you make will be different............ From the carbs and cals book it states a plain pancake is 15g Carbohydrate for a 62g pancake............so 0.24g of carbs in every gram of pancake......... Same goes with the syrup, a bit trickier to weigh right enough, there is 80.5g of carbs in every 100g of syrup, so a wee splash of the stuff will probably only warrant 1 unit of insulin............. Enjoy......... ![]() |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / high bloods tiny carbs Just from your results it would seem that your 15 BI dose is not enough...................Another theory for similar BG behavior at this time is the dawn phenomenon, but it seems you are waking on target and are having a tiny carb with insulin, so those two factors can eliminate the dawn phenomenon contributing...........So if you continued with similar results in the following days, it definitely time to up your dose and do some carb free testing, which shouldn't be too difficult as you carb free regularly.......... Good luck............ ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / How to test for Spikes with Food This thread is already well underway but thought I would give my tuppence worth..........I look for spikes on a daily basis between lunch and dinner [convenience] at about 1.5 hours post meal, I do this because I am looking to see what combination of food, that I have just eaten for lunch, has been most successful with my chosen timing of insulin......... I have managed to have several items for lunch, some being quite carby, and still maintain a BG below 7, and that's just with dose timing.......... So my advice is to test and record, take notes...................it is possible to avoid large spikes........... Th Shreddies actually will be absorbed quite quickly, just like white bread is, faster than sugar even................but again, everyone needs to make there own observations with all the different foods they eat on a regular basis......... |

Topic: General Discussion / When is best to take BI Levemir Levemir is most commonly used a split dose background insulin, but it is used a single dose by some.............I take mine in the morning at 6:30am, when I get up, this is most convenient for me as I am dosing for breakfast and testing my blood at this time anyway.......... I then take my evening dose at 10:30pm, this was originally an even split in time and I took my evening dose with dinner at 5:30om - 6:30pm, but because of the DP, I chose to take it later and so giving me more units on board at the 4:00am mark........ So to answer the question heading your thread, I would say there is no particular 'best' time to do it as everyone is different..........I would start with convenience and an even 12 hour split, and then from there, just tweak it to best suit your needs, which will change many times throughout life.......... ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / When is best to take BI Levemir Hello again Marie,I'm on levemir and I take it at noon and midnight, more or less! It will vary from person to person depending largely on their normal life routines, e.g. When they need to leave for work. As long as you keep to approximately 12 hours between injections you can, in theory, take it when you like. In practice the timing can have an effect as I suggested in another post. You can adjust the time if you feel that your current injection times are not ideal, but do it slowly over a week or so! If, for example, you wanted to bring your morning BI forward from 10.30 am to 8.30 am you could bring it forward by half an hour a day over four days. Having said that, when I altered mine I moved it by an hour a day. If you move the morning BI of course, you must also move the evening BI. You need to keep a close watch on your BG while this change is going on to make sure you don't go into hypo. Highs are not so much of a problem as long as they do not persist. Roger |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / high bloods tiny carbs I did dafne first 4.5 years ago before having children. The ideas are great but I always struggled to get the right background insulin. I tended to rise very high post breakfast and slightly less dramatically after lunch, but then drop suddenly before lunch and late afternoon. Changing my ratios for breakfast did not help only giving me more hypos. The pump is good because you can set different basal rate (like the bi) throughout the day. So from 2am to 7am I am on much more than I am after breakfast. (1.01u per hour down to 0.45u per hour, approximately) I only got it in November so I am still getting used to it and I still have highs and lows but I definitely have a change in my before breakfast readings. My hbA1c dropped from 7.4 to 6.8 in 3 months. Putting the canulla in has got easier. I was dreading it each time initially and also if you don't get them in right they can get sore and not work. Wearing it is not too much of a problem. I don't really notice it. Only when using the toilet as the tubing tends to get caught on my jeans. Jenny (not JennyNZ, a different one!) |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / high bloods tiny carbs Hi JennyNZ,Thanks for your comments. I think it could be BI linked but I get unexplained rises in BG throughout the day similar to dawn phen. I'm not wanting to eat much at the moment, really it seams to help. When I do, it is generally non carb veggi's and some dairy. I have sent emails to my diabetes team, No answers as yet. I love the DAFNE approach but I still struggle. Do you prefer pump therapy? What are the pumps like? Thanks again. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Running and pump use Hi Helen - hope your training is going well. I'm sorry but I'm not on a pump either but Have done a few 1/2 marathons and got it down to a fine art. I found the diabetic clinics weren't much help at all until I saw a nutritionist who specialised in endurance sport and diabetes. regardless of whether you are on a pump or not ( or being a diabetic or not) there are general nutrition guidelines that apply to long events (i.e. 2 hours or more). I started doing triathlons and learnt all my nutrition through them. for any event over 2 hours athletes should be consuming approx their weight in grams of CHO per hour so if you weigh say 60kg you should be consuming 60gr of complex carbs per hour approx. I've found that at most races drink stations are about every 5km or so, so I would either have their sports drink or have one of my own gels (25gr CHO) with water. that equalled 50gr per hour round about. I am not a flash athlete at all so am slow, but these are pretty standard principles for long events. I would use the same principle for long swims and bike rides, too. I find advice for diabetics focusses more on their diabetes that on the athlete.sorry that doesn't help with your pump query though. |

Topic: General Discussion / How to test for Spikes with Food Hi Marie,Levemir lasts about 14 hours, during the last two hours it is falling quite quickly therefore if you take your evening dose at about 10.30 pm at around 8.30 am it starts to fall quickly, just at the time you are taking in carbs for breakfast. The amount of carbohydrate you take in should be covered by your QA insulin but your blood glucose level is regulated by the action of both insulins working together, so if the levemir is tailing off it could result in higher than expected blood glucose by lunchtime, even though your morning Levemir has kicked in by then. Please remember though that this is only a possibility, it may have nothing to do with your particular case. Discuss this with your HCP and see how he/she feels about the option of changing your BI injection times. Have you done any carb-free meals to check how your BI is working? Doing a BG test two hours after meals gives you an idea how high your peaks normally go. They also give you an idea about the amount of QA you are taking for a given meal, in conjunction with your normal tests. If your BG is up in the 20's two hours after the meal but is back within range by the next meal it suggests that things are working reasonably well but you may need a slight reduction in BI with a corresponding increase in QA. Please don't take any action on what I have said (apart from the testing) without discussing it with your HCP. I may be wrong, it has been known. Back in 1987 I went around for a whole week thinking I had made a mistake, but I was wrong. I hadn't! ![]() Roger |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / high bloods tiny carbs HelloHave you tried checking your bg in between the meals to see when it rises? Might help to know if was bi or QA related. But given the tiny amounts of carbs I would have thought it was bi related. The only other thing would be that there was more carbs in what you are eating than you think but I expect you have already checked that out. Do you just avoid carbs and fill up on non carb stuff or eat very little all day? I used to have weird blood sugars that went very high and then dropped very low and got put on a pump which has been brilliant but also showed how I need drastically different amount of bi throughout the day. I tend to email my dafne/diabetes team with my results, copied and pasted from here, and I think that being able to do this really helped them know what was happening with me and helped me get a pump. Hope you sort things out. Jenny |
