Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Tefal Actifry

Could you weigh them based on jacket potato? Maybe you will have to have a few guesses and then write it in your carb book in the notes section.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Tefal Actifry

I have a similar problem with jacket potatoes, I like to microwave them first then finish them off in the oven, so when I remember I weigh the potato before cooking. Potato raw is 1.5cp per 100g, I dont't think any carbohydrate is lost in cooking. This is a little more tricky when cooking for a family, however. I have been considering buying a tefal actifry how do the chips taste?

Topic: General Discussion / Changing of Needles/BG Meters

Have been to see our team of HCPs here and whilst there asked about the JAZZ meter.
They had no experience of it. It has not been promoted here and it may be that nobody in this area is using it.

I buy my bread from an artisan bread maker; one of his best sellers is a Marmite Loaf. SUPERB, served warm with a big pat of butter!

I have seen myself contacting the folk who make certain products to get nutritional information from them...........

If you think you will be using it frequently, maybe a wee email might do the trick..........

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Tefal Actifry

This was the site I found last night but as you can see, some of their values are a bit daft - one gives 100g of chips as having 0g CHO, yet another gives 100g as having 13.5g. This doesn't seem sensible! Either way I think I will guestimate my values based on oven chips and add a bit !! not very scientific but I think it is the best I can do.

Dont know how reliable that is personally.........it seems that the carb value is cut when using it, is that right?

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Tefal Actifry

Thank you for the welcome and your response Smile

I guessed at the cooking process being similar to oven baking and calculated accordingly (I only took 4 chips as a trial) There are obviously more CPs in the actifry chips than either oven or fried as my blood was 11 when I was heading to bed. The chips loose so much moisture in the cooking that per g of weighed food the carbs are more concentrated. I wish when companies promote a new machine on health grounds they would supply guidance on the range of nutritional changes the machine will make to the food!! Does anyone else use the Actifry? Has anyone cracked the calculation of Carbs with it?

Any help will be really really appreciated!!

Welcome to the forum.............

The carbs and cals book states that both oven chips and chip shop chips have roughly 0.3grams of carbohydrate for every 1g of chips............

But I suppose oven chips have been fried already and you are just reheating...............

The oil content obviously has no carbs, however I dont know what kind of changes, if any, frying with less oil would have to the carbohydrate value of the potato.................I would assume it would not be anything significant anyway...........

I hope someone else has a better answer...........

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Tefal Actifry

Is there a resource anywhere for carbohydrate content of foods usually done in a deep fat fryer now cooked in the new Tefal Actifry? I have searched online and am getting the variance of 1.3cp per 100 g to zero which is obviously rubbish. I am sooo frustrated at the lack of information on carbs, as calories are covered ad infinitum!! (Rant Over) any help would be appreciated Very Happy

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / White Bread or Brown?

I love the brown bread - not because of the higher fibre, lower GI etc, but because I love the taste. I prefer granary, but will happily eat brown. I have on occasions had the Bergan bread because I was trying to eat an over all lower GI diet - ie I had to endure brown rice as well. It did work but so boring. I'm afraid I find white bread tasteless and so I choose brown - which is what DAFNE allows us all to do - eat what we choose.

It is an interesting debate, and I bet it is a bit like marmite, with camps firmly opposed. Laughing

More commonly type 2s will need to choose there food strategically, so basically, choose foods that have as little an impact on blood sugars as possible, low GI.

Type 1 diabetics taking this approach is also good, but purely a personal choice. If you can eat white bread and get your insulin dose/timing right to manage it without spiking, then theoretically you can eat it without feeling like a criminal......

The burgen bread is lower carb and lower GI, so it needs less insulin and it also gets absorbed much slower, helped by all the seeds etc too.........

Thanks novorapidboi26, i think i'm going to stick with my white bread Very Happy

As you probably guessed from my other response, I will eat any kind of bread, unlike a lot of folk, both type 1 and 2 who choose there bread carefully, I dont know if I SHOULD be doing this, but I dont............. Wink

I so much prefer white bread but an awful lot of diabetics i believe have brown (ie bergen) so i don't know whether i'm doing right or wrong having white.

Hey there,

the first thing I always look at is BI, and at risk of sounding like a broken record [all my other posts], I would put to you that your BI is not correct ,and therefore trying to work out your QA needs will be difficult at best..........

Example:

Sunday 20/11/2011

6.49 - 7.49: No carbs or QA insulin on board, your blood glucose went up, suggesting your evening BI of 22 is insufficient, however could also be signs of the dawn phenomenon, to confirm DP you should do a 3 am test.

12.43 - 15.00: No carbs but 2 units of correction, your BG still went up, suggesting your BI in the morning is also insufficient. you could confirm this by having a carb free dinner also.

Later on the week you moved your BI up, which is good, but you may need to go further................I personally move my BI dose up 2 units a time, unless there is only a small increase in BG.

So just be patient, and keep increasing your BI dose till it hold you steady, both overnight and during the day.....................my doses are 32 in the morning [6.50] and 38 in the evening [22.00], the later evening dose is because it help with the DP.

All good advice so far.....................

And correct too, I left my DAFNE course far from on top of things, it takes a while to get your background requirements sussed accurately, and only then can the carbs/insulin ratios be established, stick with it.............

And enjoy your time out, dont worry too much about the carb count, as it will be a guess anyway.............just keep testing.............. Laughing
