Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / White Bread or Brown? I love the brown bread - not because of the higher fibre, lower GI etc, but because I love the taste. I prefer granary, but will happily eat brown. I have on occasions had the Bergan bread because I was trying to eat an over all lower GI diet - ie I had to endure brown rice as well. It did work but so boring. I'm afraid I find white bread tasteless and so I choose brown - which is what DAFNE allows us all to do - eat what we choose. It is an interesting debate, and I bet it is a bit like marmite, with camps firmly opposed. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / White Bread or Brown? More commonly type 2s will need to choose there food strategically, so basically, choose foods that have as little an impact on blood sugars as possible, low GI.Type 1 diabetics taking this approach is also good, but purely a personal choice. If you can eat white bread and get your insulin dose/timing right to manage it without spiking, then theoretically you can eat it without feeling like a criminal...... The burgen bread is lower carb and lower GI, so it needs less insulin and it also gets absorbed much slower, helped by all the seeds etc too......... |

I so much prefer white bread but an awful lot of diabetics i believe have brown (ie bergen) so i don't know whether i'm doing right or wrong having white. Gill |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Can anyone hive advice please Hey there, the first thing I always look at is BI, and at risk of sounding like a broken record [all my other posts], I would put to you that your BI is not correct ,and therefore trying to work out your QA needs will be difficult at best.......... Example: Sunday 20/11/2011 6.49 - 7.49: No carbs or QA insulin on board, your blood glucose went up, suggesting your evening BI of 22 is insufficient, however could also be signs of the dawn phenomenon, to confirm DP you should do a 3 am test. 12.43 - 15.00: No carbs but 2 units of correction, your BG still went up, suggesting your BI in the morning is also insufficient. you could confirm this by having a carb free dinner also. Later on the week you moved your BI up, which is good, but you may need to go further................I personally move my BI dose up 2 units a time, unless there is only a small increase in BG. So just be patient, and keep increasing your BI dose till it hold you steady, both overnight and during the day.....................my doses are 32 in the morning [6.50] and 38 in the evening [22.00], the later evening dose is because it help with the DP. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / White Bread or Brown? As you probably guessed from my other response, I will eat any kind of bread, unlike a lot of folk, both type 1 and 2 who choose there bread carefully, I dont know if I SHOULD be doing this, but I dont............. |

Topic: General Discussion / annoyed and fed up All good advice so far.....................And correct too, I left my DAFNE course far from on top of things, it takes a while to get your background requirements sussed accurately, and only then can the carbs/insulin ratios be established, stick with it............. And enjoy your time out, dont worry too much about the carb count, as it will be a guess anyway.............just keep testing.............. |

Topic: General Discussion / annoyed and fed up Hi TcMonkey, I completed Dafne in March and the most important advice stick with it as it does work and become second nature. I am my own worst critic and if things dont work im guilty of over analizing. I never used to test and to be honest relied on luck for many years. My blood sugars are better but when I completed course they went bad, until I got on top of ratios and real world living. Your not on your own and very good sources of advice are available on here and your Health Care consultants. Keep smiling and have a great birthday!!! Dean |

Topic: General Discussion / annoyed and fed up Hello I'm sorry to hear that. i did Dafne probably about 5 years ago now or more and from memory it took me at least 3 - 5 months and to get things to a stage where I understood what I was doing and felt in control. The reason was that it took that time of writing results down and looking back, analysing them and spotting patterns. Also I needed to remember that every day in my life is different. ie. I eat different things every day, have different amounts of exercise, sometimes dirnk alcohol, have a cold etc, etc. Don't be too hard on yourself it just takes time and the benefits were worth it. I wiould go out and enjoy your dinner and not worry. My consultant always told me one blood sugar that wasn't right was neither here nor there so just do the best you can. I eat out quite a bit and even after years of practice it's really difficult to get carbs right in restaurants and being currently addicted to MasterChef and seeing the hidden sugars etc that is put in food I can see why. I hope this is of some encouragement and Happy Birthday for tomorrow. |

Topic: General Discussion / annoyed and fed up Hey everybody, I've been doing the Dafne way for 2 months now. Have been diabetic for 7 years. My readings are worse now then when I guessed how much insulin to take.. well that's how it feels, to be honest I didn't test very much, until now.....just so annoyed because I am putting everything into the Dafne way and it just isn't happening.Plus its my birthday tomorrow and I'm worried about going out for dinner and not counting carve right. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / High blood readings Do you feel you need to go and see the nurse.............if there is a pattern then you probably need to up your ratio at breakfast.....................its unfortunate you cant inject before, as the majority of folk benefit from giving the insulin time to get going.............. |

Topic: General Discussion / Funniest/strangest/worst hypo moment....
That is a strange observation..................are you on a pump? If you had a carb free meal in an attempt to test you background/basal requirements and therefore less calories, could you get accurate results.......? |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / High blood readings Just to say that I'm taking Lantus twice a day 7 AM and 7 PM although my dose well down from the previous single night time dose of 26 units. I'm now taking 9 units mornings and 7 or 8 units evenings. I'd certainly suggest speaking to your diabetic nurse about split doses as I found it certainly helped me improve my control. Having said that I'm only up at this time because I did a 3 AM test myself. Foolishly didn't allow for high carbs in Branston Pickle with supper last night and BG went through the roof. I hope all settles down with you. Best wishes. |

Topic: General Discussion / Funniest/strangest/worst hypo moment.... Not sure how relevant this is because I am so brittle and atypical... If I have fewer calories over a 24hr period my BI becomes too much and hypos follow. E |
