Topic: Questions for HCPs / High blood readings I am no professional but will give my thoughts if you dont mind...............As Lantus is normally only given once a day, you are restricted to one dose which may not be sufficient during some hours of the day, whilst being too much for you at other hours of the day......... You could try and investigate the exact problem areas on your current dose by having carb free meals or even missing one if you can......... Another option, which I would ask you speak to the team about, is to split your Lantus dose, one morning, one night..........this will give you much more flexibility with doses during the day and in the evening, REMEMBER that the effect of a change to your Lantus dose takes a few days to settle in... The next step after that would be Levemir, a much more flexible insulin, but not everyone likes it................. Whilst you test your background requirements you will just need to compensate with extra QA............. Have you had any experience with Levemir or discussed splitting your BI dose? |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / High blood readings After a spell where I increased my Lantus from 24 units (evening only) to 26 then 28 I had very irregular readings - highs and lows throughout the day. I went back to 24 units and then had a fortnight of almost perfect readings (for me anyway). However, since last Wednesday (16) I've been high or very high most mornings and at around 11 pm. Noon and 6 pm have been fine (after adjustments at breakfast). I recorded yesterday as16.2 (8.40) 7 (1.30 pm) 8 (6 pm) 14.8 (11 pm) and got up at 3 am to get 13.6 despite having taken +6 Humalog at 11 pm. This morning it was 15.1. I've no idea what's going on but am reluctant to increase the Lantus after my earlier experience. Any idea/suggestions |

Assuming 2 slices of bread at roughly 20g each, that would be 4 CPs, so a ratio of 2.5:1 with no corrections, does that sound right............... |

Topic: General Discussion / Funniest/strangest/worst hypo moment.... You mean how do you establish if you need more or less.......................?This is done by testing your blood with no carbs or quick acting insulin on board, so during the day, you could skip a meal [like you done already], or have a carb free meal...........you can then see by looking at your results whether your BI dose is doing its job of holding you steady [+/- 1mmol/l]....... It also depends on what insulin your on, Lantus, usually taken once a day, will have to be adjusted, then you test for a few days, as the effects take longer........ Levemir, which is normally split into twice a day, can be adjusted and the effects noticed the next day.............and you would also have 2 separate time slots to test, daytime and night time............. So you would start with the night time, no carbs or insulin after evening meal, take your BI at normal time, test before bed, test in morning, should of been held steady if dose is right, if not, adjust your dose accordingly, say 1-2 units............ And the rest is straight forward......... |

10u for the salmon sandwich. I'm wondering if it's the BI which i'm taking too much of, there was no alcohol consumed last night. |

Topic: General Discussion / Funniest/strangest/worst hypo moment.... So how much did you take for your salmon sandwich at 1635..................I would of expected a low before the next morning if this dose was too much though...............Maybe your BI is too high, either that or alcohol...........! |

Topic: General Discussion / Funniest/strangest/worst hypo moment....
Hi, I know the last time i ate yesterday was 1635pm when i had a salmon sandwich & just my usual amnt / dose of QA, didn't have any tea & also no QA then at bedtime / suppertime i had salmon mashed up in a bowl with one or two small pieces of cheddar cheese in, then usual BI??? RE no tea, took pork steaks out of the fridge, they came with the shopping delivery on Tuesday, use by date was 27/11/11 & they were very or the normal pink colour underneath but going browny on top so chucked them as i did'nt want to risk a bout of food poisoning. Hubby said i should've taken them straight back to As--! Anyhow that was the end of the casserole ![]() Gill |

Topic: General Discussion / Funniest/strangest/worst hypo moment.... Wooops!Early this am (about 0700am when i checked on my meter before) i had a very bad hypo. Apparently i was jerking about in bed, my hubby said he somehow managed to roll me out of bed, fed me the usual, some jelly babies, i "walked" into the bathroom & sat on the toilet in the pitch black, my hubby was asking me if i'd done a test to which i started bursting out into fits of laughter, i woke the whole household (daughter & son) up, then i shouted to my hubby to go & get me a cheese sandwich, which he very kindly did . When i checked my meter before my bs was 2.8 and yet i've had hypos at this level many a time before and always been fully capabable . Also when i checked my meter i'd done several or should i say lots of tests at the time of my hypo, no wonder my finger is sore today, lol. I had a headache before but i'm glad to say i feel much better now I had porridge for brekkie and now i'm off to get some lunch. |

Topic: General Discussion / Funniest/strangest/worst hypo moment.... Hi,A few years ago possibly 4 or 5 i went out to Asda, had a cheese salad (cheese, lettuce, tomatoes etc), did a full injection of my QA, maybe 10u as a guess, think i was on Novorapid for QA & Insulatard for BI at the time, then several hours later i had a VERY bad hypo, falling about, banging my head against the wall in the bathroom even turned into a hamster throwing demon & threw my daughter's hamster across the room! I was in hospital for an overnight stay. I once went through a stage where i was having hypos in a morning & tended to get very aggressive and adament that I was fine when my husband kept trying to "pour" lucozade down my neck. I've also had them where i laugh hysterically. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carb counting help!!! Thats a good point................Cooked and Uncooked Pasta is tricky.................as the cooked stuff will have absorbed water and therefore become more heavy ,however will contain less carbs per 100g. This will only apply in the house if the pasta is being cooked for more than one person, otherwise the uncooked carb amount would still be valid as you would be eating it all to yourself anyway.......... |

Topic: General Discussion / feeling unnormal Did you give yourself insulin with those symptoms.....................I have been like this a few times and if HI on the machine, I would normally take 25 units of insulin to get me back down quick............ What happened at the hospital..............? |

I've just remembered your question about pasta. Firstly you need to be more specific. What kind of pasta? Fresh or cooked? The carb counter on this site shows that 100g of fresh pasta represents 5.5 cp's or 55g of carbohydrate. This means that your pasta, at 291g, if it is fresh, and of the same kind as in the list, would represent 160.05g of carbohydrate, or 16 cp's (2.91 x 55 = 160.05). |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carb counting help!!! It's just observation, memory and common sense. No-one knows all this stuff at the beginning and everyone has to estimate when eating out. Over time you will be able to make reasonable estimates. At home you can weigh your food and then look up the carb value of it in one of the reference works available. I am impressed with the one on this site. Having a smartphone or tablet with you makes things easier, if this app is loaded. This is where memory comes in. When you know the carb value of a certain amount of potato, or pasta or whatever, you need to remember what that looks like on the plate. If you can do that then you can make intelligent adjustments next time, is the portion bigger or smaller than the one you weighed at home? As novorapidboi said, many foods have the amount of carb stated on the package/ tin/bottle etc. This is sometimes given as a value per piece, sometimes as Xg of carb per 100g of the food. Every ten grams of carb being 1cp.You'll get there! Just remember, practice makes perfect. :-) Talk to your HCP, ask him/her to go over ratios again with you. That's what they are there for after all. This is important because you will require different amounts of insulin for every ten grams of carb at different times of the day. I've just thought about sausages. You can be really caught out by sausages. Some of the sausages that we buy from supermarkets can be around 6g of carb per sausage, but the ones we get from the butcher are only about 1g per sausage. You can't assume that two things that look the same have the same value. Mistakes will be made. Don't worry about it. Keep checking values and trying to remember them and what they look like in terms of the volume of food on the plate. Best of luck! :-) |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carb counting help!!! In the majority of cases you should be using the packaging labels, for times when your out and about the carbs and cals book off amazon is really useful. It gives you a visual image of.different size portions in relation to a dinner plate.Using this is much more effective than guessing... The rule of 10grams = 1 unit still applies.........once you have your units, you then multiply them by your ratio...... What are your ratios currently.......? |

Topic: General Discussion / Hi BG Hi, just spotted this thread sorry. Yes steroids DO cause insulin restistance which obviously raises your BG. They should have explained this to you when you had the treatment if they knew you were a diabetic. My case was slightly different in that I had to take the steriods over a period of months, it is very frustrating since they don't have a linear effect on your BG. By this I mean the more CP's you eat the bigger the effect that the steriods seem to have.I agree you should speak to an expert on this , there are a number of types of steroid and the effects of each type may be different. However a consultant should know exactly what effect you should expect, even a GP should know the basics ( although mine did not apparently ). I would guess the injection you had IS having an effect and you will need assistance when the effect of the steroids wear off since your insulin requirements will drop back down and you will need to adjust for this as well. |

Topic: General Discussion / feeling unnormal I have been type for 20years now - and I have always, when out and about, injected in public - in my view, and it is only my view, I have to inject, they don't have to look. To be honest I have never had any adverse reaction from anyone and I have never noticed anyone being affected - although I couldn't care less about them and so am not looking. The times I have had a reaction, it has always been curiosity and has opened up a discussion about diabetes and its control. Most non diabetics are unaware - not surprisingly, of how the condition is controlled and what to do if they come across a diabetic in difficulties, and so I feel these discussions are for the good as they help educate people.Whilst I wish I didn't have diabetes, I am certainly not going to hide away because I do. If people don't like me injecting, it is their problem not mine, and as mention above - I have to inject, they don't have to look. |

Topic: General Discussion / Hi BG I noticed that Marke, in one of the other recent threads, mentioned insulin resistance when steroids have been used. So he may have had a similar experience. Suggest you make your BI changes in a progressive way allowing perhaps 3 days between alterations - gives time for it to work through your system.Stick with it ![]() Regards Garry |
