Topic: General Discussion / getting a pump I was given a pump 3 years ago because I was having a lot of hypos and was finding it difficult to control with injections. I have to say it was the best thing that could have happened to me. Since having the pump my control is much better and hypos are very rare now, so it made a great difference |

Topic: General Discussion / steroid injections Welcome to the forum........No personal experience but I have heard that steroids do elevate blood sugar levels throughout my travels on the support forums......... If those levels are producing ketones then yes, you could apply sick day rules................... So if I remember correctly, if you can eat normally but still have a small amount of ketones, then check for them every 4 hours, appropriately dosing for the ketones on top of any carb doses...... So the trick is to test for ketones, as these are why the rules exist, I hope the effects dont last to long............. ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE HCP's are wonderful I was in the Armed forces when i was Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and sent to the local civilian hospital. I started to get a lecture from a rather overweight consultant about weight management etc. I was fit as a fiddle and not over weight so just gave him a knowing smile which stopped him in his tracks and made the nurses laugh.![]() |

Topic: Site Development / e-mail reminders of DAFNE existence Take a look at the Users tab, and the number of subscribers with zero posts![]() Many will have signed up after their course finished, and then had other priorities in life. A reminder certainly wouldn't harm, and the more traffic the site generates, surely that must be a +ve for us all. GFI |

Topic: General Discussion / My HbA1c Knew that I could rely on you all to review. We need accept the new units as in the future this is the way that all Path Labs - worldwide, will report. Thank You whiskysmum and novarapidboi26 for your valued input. Have a table.....when I can put my hand on it....that we can use as a reference From http://www.diabetes.org.uk/Guide-to-diabetes/Monitoring/Blood_glucose/Glycated_haemoglobin_HbA1c_and_fructosamine/HbA1c-Standardisation-Information-for-Laboratory-Professionals/ Quote:- How do old and new relate? The relationship between the new IFCC reference method and the current “DCCT aligned†assays has been stable over several years. When HbA1c results are expressed as % haemoglobin, the equation describing the relationship is: IFCC-HbA1c (mmol/mol) = [DCCT-HbA1c (%) - 2.15] x 10.929 ![]() A guide to the new values expressed as mmol/mol is: Current DCCT aligned HbA1c(%) New IFCC HbA1c (mmol/mol) 4.0 - 20 5.0 - 31 6.0 - 42 6.5 - 48 7.0 - 53 7.5 - 58 8.0 - 64 9.0 - 75 10.0 - 86 What are the targets in new units? The equivalent of the current DCCT HbA1c targets of 6.5% and 7.5% are 48mmol/mol and 58mmol/mol in the new units, with the non-diabetic reference range of 4.0% to 6.0% being 20 mmol/mol to 42 mmol/mol. End of Quote from diabetes.org.uk. Hope that registers with us all.......... It is just a straight forward conversion using some constants...........If you are anything like me.....Keep It Simple Stupid......the KISS principal for all Engineers...use the table! I'm sure the gentleman in the know would be able to incorporate this formula for HbA1c conversion within the apps to enable showing either value in record keeping. Best Wishes to us all for Christmas ![]() Garry |

Topic: Site Development / Any plans for a blackberry app
The blackberry apps are java based I believe, that's the point I was making, so a totally different ball game.......... I do think an app can be built for free, but the ins and outs of it all are unknown to me, so couldn't really comment............ Alot of work in the end......... But one day maybe.............. |

Topic: General Discussion / Eating Out Thanks for your comments!Perhaps in my thread I've come across a little formal! I understand that the idea of DAFNE is to have to flexibility, so that life with diabetes becomes less of a challenge, and I'm really grateful for that. I'm definitely looking forward to going out, but the point I was trying to make is that I'm quite sensitive to the way the insulin works, and large variations in my BG can make me feel confused and withdrawn. So all I was really asking for are some tips as to what I can eat so that it doesn't spoil my evening out. ![]() Simon. |

Topic: General Discussion / Changing of Needles/BG Meters Hi guys and girls, I have been reading through the posts regarding the single use of needles/lancets, It seems that many people are trying to re-use designed disposable sharps. This is totally wrong, and for your own safety it should stop immediately. You will probably see on the boxes these items are contained in will probably have "Sterility is guaranteed if needle seal is unbroken" There is a real reason for this, and if its not obvious, that is a shame. We all have a higher risk of infections because of our disease before we poke second hand needles under the skin. Subjected to the atmosphere the sterility is not guaranteed, after all we can catch a cold or flu by somebody sneezing near-by, so does it now make any more sense to single use these items. After all said and done, drug users get free needles and syringes to support their HABIT, we have no choice! Please guys look after yourselves as infected or damaged injection sites are terrible issues to deal with.![]() |

Topic: Site Development / Any plans for a blackberry app sorry to disappoint you both, but the DAFNE App is written specifically for the iphone and Android platforms, its not java based. The issue is the 'cost' and effort of developing for what are unfortunately 'niche' platforms. A blackberry is more of a business phone and I'm presuming ( I will check) that to develop for it will require costs and expertise thatwe don't posess. We have the other versions of the app because we had both the expertise and software to do it. If there is someone signed up who has the required skills and software to develop a blackberry app then we are happy to share the information and help develop the app. Our only requirement is that it is free. This site is 100% not for profit, we are not here to make money, rather give back some of the benefit we got from DAFNE. |
