Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE HCP's are wonderful I understand were your coming from, fortunately for me though, all the non DAFNE educated HCPs know they dont have that knowledge and are less qualified than me to handle things, in fact, after DAFNE I dont really need any professional help, at least in terms of blood sugar levels and insulin doses..............Doesn't mean my blood sugars are perfect though, maybe if I exercised more and cut my carbs I would be closer to perfection....... The incident regarding the steak pie comments is awful, however, I dont think would have changed even if DAFNE was available to them, as it seems it was just a stupid remark...................... Unfortunately you will come across so called professionals like this regardless of their familiarity with DAFNE........... I am glad DAFNE has been good for you, it changed my whole diabetic life and for that I am truly grateful to the German bloke that came up with it....... |

Topic: General Discussion / My Diabetic Review Must admit our consultant said during our post DAFNE training that his approach was to change BI by 20% to see confirmed results within a few days.So -4u may not not in fact be too radical. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE HCP's are wonderful Hello, I can confirm that DAFNE will save lives, also that the GPs and some diabetes centres are run and managed by "HOBBYists" these individuals should be stripped of their alleged qualifications, and made to attend appropriate courses to bring them up to speed. Having spoken to some friends who dont suffer from diabetes but have experienced similar incompetence from healthcare professionals, they made it clear that the Germans are years ahead of us. We understood that the DAFNE concept was invented back in the 1980s, so as I was diagnosed in 1976 - it took all of 35 years to get the proper information and coaching to look after myself (after all the damage of diabetes related diseases have taken hold and cant be reversed.) I am blessed by the DAFNE girls at Northampton, they have done so much and continue to do so. Hats off to all involved in any part of DAFNE. |

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE HCP's are wonderful Does anybody else find that non DAFNE health care professionals can be foolish and at times plain dangerous? In my 21 years with diabetes I have expereanced many examples of this. For example shortly after being married I remember a young doctor taking great delight in humiliating me. Mid way through his rant this boy who barely looked old enough to shave gave my wife a wink and said "I bet it's been a while since he had a good telling off" I wanted to hit him. As it turned out my Hba1c came back perfect. But the damage was done. I did not want to take any advice from that horrible man and therefore missed many clinic appointments and was even less motivated to do blood tests. Would you go to your boss and try to negotiate time off to see some guy who looks down his nose and gives you a verbal kicking because he "knows" there is no excuse for poor control. "I went to university and read a book so I know about this" On another occasion my wife was hypo but too ill to eat or drink. Her sister phoned the local GP for some advice and was told by the receptionist that if she was a diabetic she must need her insulin. We politely asked to speak to a doctor. Yesterday we had a similar experience . A hospital doctor told my wife that it was no wonder she was ill as she had eaten half of my steak pie and diabetics should not eat pies. A more senior doctor examined her and it turns out that she has non pie related kidney problems. How different that is to those two wonderful ladies who ran my DAFNE course. On the first day they said diabetes was not my fault. I wanted to kiss them. They told me not to expect perfection. I wanted to kiss them again. They gave me skills that will prolong and improve my life. I love those girls. I am eager to get my blood tests done and attend every appointment. If you are still reading this thank you. I've wanted to get some of that off my chest for years. Have you had a similar experience or does this sort of thing just happen to me? |

Topic: General Discussion / Interesting, maybe? Interesting, yes...............if a treatment [vaccine] did become available it could change things for the millions of potential type 1 diabetics...........Dont know how it work for the existing population whose beta cells have been completely eliminated...........? Could islet transplants be used together with the vaccine to regenerate beta cell function. who knows? Good luck to them........ ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / My Diabetic Review Congrats from me too....................You should only be having 15-20g of quick acting sugar, so depending on brand of jelly baby that can vary, but 4-6 may be a little too much, but you need to test after treating your self to see if it is too much, it may be just right for you...........you never know.......... Even now as a seasoned DAFNE graduate I can find it very hard to resist over treating, in fact, last night was one of those times...........I was 4.6 before dinner, and I injected 10 minutes before eating, soon after I finished I went LOW, and had a chocolate biscuit, a cornetto and some other ice lolly, just because I could and it was all Christmasy............ Do you agree with the change in BI? I suppose it is a logical step to take initially to bring your levels up slightly, then fine tune your ratios again................. Let us know how you get on............. ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / My Diabetic Review so whats the difference between quickly the absorbed sugar in jelly babies and the quickly absorbed sugar in dextrose ? Not a lot.On what grounds has she advised you to drop you BI from 34u to 30u, I would only ever reduce it by 2u at a time and only with good reason i.e I had tried a carb-free meal and my BG was dropping because of too much BI. Congrats regarding your HBA1c, you must be doing something right ![]() What are you defining as 'lo' by the way ? |

Topic: General Discussion / My Diabetic Review My Diabetic ReviewHi, If it's ok i'd like to let you know how i went on with my diabetic review today 07/12/11. I had a phone call last week off my Dsn saying about my great HbA1c result which was 6.8%. My bs results are all over the place. My Dsn would like to see me again in about 10 days time because 1. she was rather concerned about me having a lot of lo's & also the fact of all the jelly babies (i have 4 -6 for each hypo), she wants me to have instead either dextrose gel or tablets 2. she has said to me to lower my BI from 34u to 30u i've booked my appointment for next Thursday 15/12/11 Gill ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Smoothies It tells you on the carton (not sure if the bottle does too). Been drinking these every morning for years and I'd say use the nutritional info as a guide, check your BG and work out how much QA you need. I find I need less than the carton would advise. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Ten days on after stopping my Levemir Hi Fiona, no problem it was an 'interesting' post. It makes sense now ! well almost, they obviously left behind some islets if you can still produce insulin and I would guess you will quite happily keep producing insulin. Its a shame they cannot give you an islet implant since I would guess you have more chance of the transplanted cells keeping working.Anyway you are welcome to general Diabetes advice but you are quite a unique case ![]() |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Ten days on after stopping my Levemir That's fine, Mark.I thought the forum could only be read by HCPs, and intended that one of my educators would pick it up. Otherwise I'd've tried to be clearer... I have 'iatrogenic' or medically-induced diabetes (which acts almost exactly like T1), after surgery that removed nearly all of my pancreas. There is no honeymoon period, just drastically reduced insulin production. Anyway, I have now shared my diary with one of my educators,, and will cease to sow confusion here... Best regards. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Ten days on after stopping my Levemir Hi, sorry but I have removed your phone number from your original post. I'm not being awkward but these forums can be read by anyone ( although you need to be registered to post messages to them) and its for your own safety. Its never a good idea to post personal information to public websites and we don't want to be responsiblefor you being phoned by untrustworthy people. I'm a bit puzzled as to why you were put on a DAFNE course if you are still producing a substantial amount of insulin ? How were you diagnosed as having Type 1 ? as novarapidboi says its a lot easier for most of us since if we don't inject insulin ( including BI) or blood glucose shoots straight up. Have they tried metformin or other T2 type drugs with you. I'm just curious, I'm not sure we can provide any useful information you really need to talk to a consultant who may be able to help with your issue. We are generally just graduates with additional input by Health Care Professionals, however to give good advice we would need your medical history which is why your consultant would be a better bet. I'm sure people on this site are more than happy to help if they can though, so feel free to ask questions ![]() |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Ten days on after stopping my Levemir Hey, would just like to say welcome to the forum..................You say your still producing insulin that you described as substantial. Are you only recently diagnosed? Trying to manage diabetes when you insulin production is still present and/or unpredictable must be really hard, impossible even......... |

Topic: General Discussion / Smoothies I would search online, I suppose it will depend on the flavour and what fruit is in it...................But I would imagine there would not be much difference, I would guess there are about 20-30g in a small 250ml bottle................. |

Topic: General Discussion / Carbs & Cals Books? Hi Glad to hear the carbs and cals book is working well for people there are some differences between this and the DAFNE cp book. I think my colleagues have found that the chapati in the DAFNE cp guide is more accurate than the carbs and cals book, its still worth weighing things occasionally to keep your eye in, but this is a great visual tool and really good to have as an app if you're into the technology. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Ten days on after stopping my Levemir Hi,We decided to stop my Levemir, at the end of DAFNE, on the grounds that I seemed to be making a fair bit of insulin, and in particular, to be regulating overnight. We assumed I might have to increase my QA somewhat to compensate. Generally, I'm running a but higher than previously, but have had a couple of hypos that suggest that increasing my QA is a bit tricky. I'd really appreciate a chat about these results if possible. Things to think about: (1) I'm generally a bit higher in the mornings now. Previously I was usually between 6 and 7, but have been in the high sevens or over 8 regularly. (2) On Sun 27 I had a hypo, corrected it with dextrose and frusli bar. Four hours later my BG was 16.5 (measured twice and not corrected). We ate Indian food (!) and I had 7CPs and took 5 units, which was quite a conservative ratio. Two and three hours later again it was 4.2 and 10.6 respectively. So, a bit all over the place. (3) Identical meals and dosages are producing quite varying results. E.g. Brekky and insulin on three days was the same (Mon 28, Wed 30 and Sun 4). One day it dropped my lunchtime BG by 2mmol/l, another day it raised it by more than two, another day raised it by 1. Similarly, three afternoons I've eaten a mince pie, taken 2.5 units for 3.5 CPs, and had: a decrease of 1, and twice had an increase of 2. (4) it's obviously very tricky that my dose are so small. Half a unit either way makes for quite a big difference in ratios (which, incidentally, the DAFNE software rounds up or down quite crudely at these quantities). (5) On Sat 3 I had a mildly alarming hypo that came on quite fast. I'd taken a half unit correction with a late breakfast. my record with corrective doses isn't good, and I'm now quite nervous about correcting. Sorry to go on. I'd really appreciate a chat. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Can anyone hive advice please
Hi, Have you ruled out all variables e.g. checked equipment is working properly, make sure insulin has not got to hot or cold, make sure your CP estimation is accurate, check injection sites for lumps, have you been ill? I think the carb free meal was a really good thing to try and on that day your results were good, its hard to see a pattern so my advice would be to consider the above variables before making any changes, continue to monitor and try occasional carb free meals and if you're still stuck make an appointment to see on of the DAFNE educators at your centre. |
