Topic: Questions for HCPs / Help! Pregnant and type one

Congratulations Aphriel Very Happy
I am a Type 1 and have been for over 3 years and my daughter is nearly 6 mths old Smile
I was looked after very well by the diabetic team at my hospital (Glasgow Southern General) and had numerous scans and fortnightly then towards the end weekly checkups.
I was always told that my Insulin requirements would increase rapidly especially in the last trimester but this never happened for me, if anything my insulin requirements plummeted in the last trimester and it's only now that they're almost the same pre-pregnancy.
It sounds as though Addenbrookes will take good care of you Smile
All the very best and good luck! Smile xx

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Tesco sandwich labelling

I find it is a complete hit or miss with a lot of pre-packed food. Most of the time ASDA gives you both the amount of CHO per 100g and per pack but not always so I've been caught out before. Sad

Topic: General Discussion / Fundraising Walk for Diabetes

5mile walk!!!!
I am trying to raise £200 for research for Diabetes UK and also promoting DAFNE (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating) course for people in the backcountry to attend, There GP has to pay for the course so that’s why people don’t know about DAFNE. My aim is to promote DAFNE at events all over the place because I believe it shouldn’t have to be a postcode lottery it should be available to everyone.
ALSO don’t forget to please Donate and let’s get more research into Diabetes so it can change of lives. Thank you http://www.justgiving.com/Leighton-Webb

Topic: General Discussion / Travel Insurance

I always use boots, never had problem and provides good cover. I think the only time you actually find how good a company is when you need to make claim, and if you were to use in worse case scenario it would most likely not be you dealing with them but your travel companion. So it's worth mentioning at time to give your travel insurance permission to speak to them due to data protection as the world gone crazy.

Is there an HR department where you work? If so, you should report this to them. Are you a member of a trade union - they would take this up. It's just not acceptable.

Topic: Questions for HCPs / excercise help

Hi, I am a 39 old diabetic, who was diagnosed when 3 years old. I fortunately do not have any complications, just mild changes of someone who has had diabetes for my length of time. I completed DAFNE almost 3 years ago, and overall in better control but suffer from dawn phenomena which I control with corrections, and have had discussions with doctor and am happy to treat this way.
I know this is a grey area but any advice or guidance would be appreciated. I visit the gym between 3-5 a week and suffer with recovery before my next visit and am really going through the motions on following visits, and building a bit of tone does seem impossible. I must point out that I am not looking to become the hulk or a throwback from the wrestler days of the 80's lol, just get a bit of tone and definition.
I know supplements are widely frowned upon, and honestly I would not want to cause complications or issues but a little help without problems. I have found a whey protein which is advised to be taken before and after exercise and in morning, which I would only want to take after exercise to help recovery and not the stated 3 times a day. it contains for every 100g of dose which is taken with milk(which I would count) 25g protein, 1.2g carb & 0.75g sugar. what is your feelings on this as stated I would not want to cause kidney/problems or erratic blood tests.
The other option which was advised by trainer in gym (limited diabetic knowledge) says that enomo acid tablets before and after training would not cause problems. I have searched web with mixed views on this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as stated without causing any problems short term or long term. Many thanks Dean Confused

Topic: General Discussion / Exercise

I agree with edwards002 that getting fitter does tend to reduce the number of hypos after exercise. However, getting fitter also makes us more sensitive to insulin, so it can be a 2-edged sword.

I have absolutely no idea, sorry, on how the removal of a pancreas would affect insulin sensitivity.

The only thing I can suggest is more regular testing after exercise until you get an idea of when you are trending low, and can compensate with a couple of CPs.

Topic: General Discussion / Freestyle InsuLinx Meter

This is useful information. Apparently Freestyle InsuLinx is not the only meter with a problem, Lifescan One-Touch Verio IQ meters in UK/Ireland are also being recalled. Until deciding I will use my old Freestyle Freedom and continue to be higher than some recommend when driving. Thank you.

Hi novorapidboi26,
He said it to be undermining, he also said that we are prone to have mental illnesses and that they are well and truly deep in the brain and that we as diabetics wouldn't have a clue.............................................................
And YES it was said because I have reported the bully...........................................................
And he keeps on phoning me at home to make sure that I will turn up to meetings that no-one else knows about, this does not fill me with a good feeling as we well know we have a lot to deal with everyday as it is, it just seems that some have the wrong idea about us diabetics still............................................

Topic: General Discussion / Exercise

SA2010 said:
Thank you Edward and Thank you Warwick

In answer to your points: My cycling and exercise is never planned and so cannot really address by QA bolus changes, I know that whilst the weather is good I would try to cycle to local shops or local park. My cycling is not intense. Leisurely and other cyclists do pass me !

But I seem to be very sensitive to little activity and also very touchy with minute adjustments to lantus dose.

I have not cycled for a while because I had a number of operations over the last three years - the last of which in June to fix an incisional hernia caused by the other ops. I got the bike out a week or so ago as the weather turned round.

I am adding a few more days to the BG diary with this post to show my failed attempts to deal with it. Because the impact was delayed I decided reducing Lantus was the answer but then had very high BG level I have not had before as you can see for the entry on the 6th May. It followed a hypo but surely a rebound would not go that high - 17.1. I repeated the test and got 14.9. It shows the accuracy of the meters ! Today I went back to the previous level of Lantus as 1u reduction seemed to make such a difference - I suppose with my low BI dose (3+6 reduced to 2+6, a 1u is significant percentage).

Today no cycling and no other activity and BG level back to normal levels. I do not know how to tackle this. Very sensitive to insulin - maybe without a pancreas my diabetes behaves different from others - or is just very touchy and sensitive to insulin levels? Exercise impact could be because I am not fit. I used to go the gym before the operations in 2010.

Dear SA2010 and Garry,
sorry it has taken me a bit of time to get back to the forum and I see much water has passed under the bridge so to speak.
Garry makes some good points wrt hand cleanliness and dryness. I must confess to being somewhat "microbiologically-disgusting". So hand washing tends to get a raw deal when it comes to blood testing. Garry is correct, though, in so far as this factor could disturb the precision of your results. I got told not to squeeze my finger in order to encourage blood drop formation when last at my dafne refresher course.
So, many factors come in to play.
If your (SA2010) slow-acting insulin dosage (Lantus?) has been serving you well, then best not to mess with it.
Getting a secure base-line is the foundation for good treatment of Diabetes.
This would mean that your QA insulin with meal prior to exercise is the key to hypo-avoidance.
I had found -30%reduction of QA with meal good for everyday exercise.
I mentioned that I thought I might need -50% reduction of my QA for severe exercise.
Interestingly, the result of my first test showed that my adrenaline response (flight or fight) took over and my blood glucose values increased and ketones started to be generated with the severe exercise (Shock, horror!).
On the next occasion I shall have to try a -40% reduction of my QA instead, since -50% was clearly over-doing it a bit.
Dosage adjustment is touchy feely stuff.
You (SA2010) mentioned that you used to exercise but operations and recovery therefrom have held you back. It is perfectly understandable that you will be sensitive to the effects of exercise. This sensitivity will reduce as you get fitter. Keep working away at it and I am sure your initial reservations will melt away.

Topic: General Discussion / Freestyle InsuLinx Meter

I always listen to my body! If it says "eat", I eat, even though my meter is saying I am fine. Better to be a bit high than way too low.
I use a OneTouch Ultra 2 meter but am thinking of changing because there are smaller meters and this meter takes more blood than other ones. Have you ever used the GlucoMen LX? I was given it a few years ago. I know nothing about it, though.

Travel Insurance is important to understand, since like health insurance coverage, the customer may be refused coverage. Many insurance companies will offer a surplus of coverage for individuals and families. The company will consider few aspects of the policyholder, by reviewing the risk factors involved.

Hi Everyone,
Has anyone had their bosses say to them that because you are reporting bullying in the workplace, it's because there is a link between having Diabetes Type 1 and schizophrenia and bi-polar, and also it may be that you are having marital problems,

Please anyone reply,
