Topic: General Discussion / Endurance Exercise and BG That certainly looks like a successful ride to me. Perhaps a bit more QA at breakfast, or no gel in the first couple of hours and you wouldn't have had the highs in the early part of the ride, but overall, it looks like you managed it really well, and the latter part of the ride and absence of hypos is a huge tick mark.Well done. All the best with further refinement. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Sick Day Rules For Those Not Using MDI Therapy that is a tricky one.........i suppose it might work but with a reduced portion of the daily total.........as you still need insulin to process ketones.......... im just taking a stab in the dark though.........definitely speak to a professional, which I realise you have done by using this thread, hopefully one of our regular hcps can make some comments.... |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Sick Day Rules For Those Not Using MDI Therapy A very valid question though one I'm not sure of the answer because DAFNE is based on the MDI regime as it allows more flexibility.I hope you're feeling okay. ![]() Have you thought about changing to MDI? Would you like to do the DAFNE course? Welcome to the forum as well. Get well soon if you are poorly. |

Topic: General Discussion / BD Pen Needles I have been in email contact with BD and that there has been a production problem with th 5mm needles and when I asked about the 4mm being discontinued, I was told that they have NOT been discontinued. This an extract from the email from them: I can confirm this is definitely not the case. The BD 4 mm pen needle has not and will not be discontinued. What has happened is the name has changed slightly on the prescribing system used at GP surgery’s. It may now come up as BD 4mm Micro fine Ultra instead of Micro Fine Plus. There has however been no change to the packaging or product itself. |

Topic: General Discussion / Eco Pod program I've just ordered pods so will just save them up and order the new labels with next shipment.I love the pods! As a trial I went 3 weeks on MDI under supervision of my consultant as we couldn't stop the hypos I was having etc. I felt so rubbish and sugar levels were rising that I was put back on pod. Get minimal insulin now but feel so much better. I too have had a few failures but still much better than MDI ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Eco Pod program
Hi Just being on the phone with the nice people at omnipod really helpful, Like you said the boxes are free post with labels supplied their sending me two. Also the label states that its not Sharp's The lady said its unusual to be refused, but it can happen, hence the new labels The royal mail customer service didn't listen when I phoned insisting the box contain sharps!! Which we both know is incorrect. If your like me it would be best to ask for these new labels The new boxes have these on Off topic How you finding the pods? I think their great had some fail but I wouldn't go back to MDI again Makes my life so more enjoyable almost like being given your life back ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Counting Carbohydrates I weigh food and use labels mostly. If I have any doubt, I mark it as guesswork on my diary and try to learn from the results.I have lots of labels on my fridge - mostly of similiar brand stuff so makes dose testing much easier. We aim to buy same where we can so I'm not always having to look stuff up. It amazes me how much stuff like bread and yogurt varies from brand to brand despite all saying "medium"! Some foods, such as jackets, pasta and rice, I will try to weigh before cooking because water loss/gain makes the cooked weight very unreliable. If I get cooked ready made of pasta or rice, I rely on the labels. Jackets are very hard for me to guesstimate so like a lot of things, I tend to pass unless its only option or I really want to run the risk. The joys of D life and carb counting. Heh. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Sick Day Rules For Those Not Using MDI Therapy Hi,Does anyone know of guidelines for somebody who is on a mixtard insulin and therefore having one injection in the morning and one in the evening? What would a person using this therapy do to change their insulin when ill? Thanks |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Counting Carbohydrates I do find labels can be a bit misleading though, if its a ready meal with veg in they have to count the carbs in tomatoes and such which in a salad I wouldn't count as my BI should cover little bits like this so they are often a bit higher than I would guesstimate at. Say it says half portion is 39g (who eats just half?) I would probably inject for 7CP rounding off as I have found I often go hypo using the exact figures.Just my 2p ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Endurance Exercise and BG Update,Went out on a 100+ miler (6+ hours) on my own so I could test. Fasting BG was 12 Breakfast: 4CP - Had normal 1:1 4 QA and BI of 6, normally 13 and have had 8 before when cycling. 1.5 hours into ride BG15.5 (already had 1 gel at this point, guessed as too cold to take gloves off, Garmin said -3c when I set off!) 2.5 hours into ride BG 22.8 (had 4 QA) Lunch BG 6.8 no QA (had bacon sandwhich, 3-4CP) 6 hours into ride BG 5.3 7 hours into ride BG 8.3 Home after ride before dinner BG 5.3 (14CP, noraml 1.5:1 would be 21QA, had 10QA as risk of hypo) 1 hour after dinner check BG 8.9 2 hour after dinner check BG 6.8 Before bed BG 6 (BI normally 15, lowered this to 7) Throughout the day I had energy bars, gels and sports drinks totalling 26CP. Morning BG 11.2 - bit high, but after yesterday happy with this. All in all I am more happy with this, not sure why I had the 15.5 and 22.8, but after QA this all fell into place. Next time I will probably have a bit more BI in the evening after. Hope this report helps others judge the best way to try and deal with this rubbish, only downside to this approach is it costs a fortune in gels/drinks! ![]() Phil |

Topic: General Discussion / BD Pen Needles Best thing to do is to contact them your self's http://www.bd.com/uk/contact/ ,Could this be to do with the NHS trying to cut down on stock lines but strange thing is BD do sell there 4mm needles as shown on there product web site http://www.bd.com/uk/diabetes/page.aspx?cat=14153&id=31354 ,The other alternative for needles are pen manufactures also who supply needles but am not aware if the NHS fund these,I my self use to be user of the 3mm needles when was first DX 4 years ago but I use get awful bruising and bleeding and infection and dread lumps,I then went onto the 5mm two years ago and have found them excellent and much more manageable when injecting into site areas,Am also Sorry you will have to paste into the browser BD details![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Milking fingers causes low BG readings I think that if your finger is wet before you get the blood out, the blood sample will be diluted, which could give you a false 'low' reading. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Counting Carbohydrates Hi, I'm wondering how others count their carbohydrates:- by reading the nutritional labels on packages - by estimating the carbohydrate content or - by weighing food I nearly always - read the nutritional labels on packages or - estimate the carbohydrate content using my carbs and cals app or book |
