Topic: Questions for HCPs / Sick Day Rules For Those Not Using MDI Therapy Hi,Does anyone know of guidelines for somebody who is on a mixtard insulin and therefore having one injection in the morning and one in the evening? What would a person using this therapy do to change their insulin when ill? Thanks |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Counting Carbohydrates I do find labels can be a bit misleading though, if its a ready meal with veg in they have to count the carbs in tomatoes and such which in a salad I wouldn't count as my BI should cover little bits like this so they are often a bit higher than I would guesstimate at. Say it says half portion is 39g (who eats just half?) I would probably inject for 7CP rounding off as I have found I often go hypo using the exact figures.Just my 2p |

Topic: General Discussion / Endurance Exercise and BG Update,Went out on a 100+ miler (6+ hours) on my own so I could test. Fasting BG was 12 Breakfast: 4CP - Had normal 1:1 4 QA and BI of 6, normally 13 and have had 8 before when cycling. 1.5 hours into ride BG15.5 (already had 1 gel at this point, guessed as too cold to take gloves off, Garmin said -3c when I set off!) 2.5 hours into ride BG 22.8 (had 4 QA) Lunch BG 6.8 no QA (had bacon sandwhich, 3-4CP) 6 hours into ride BG 5.3 7 hours into ride BG 8.3 Home after ride before dinner BG 5.3 (14CP, noraml 1.5:1 would be 21QA, had 10QA as risk of hypo) 1 hour after dinner check BG 8.9 2 hour after dinner check BG 6.8 Before bed BG 6 (BI normally 15, lowered this to 7) Throughout the day I had energy bars, gels and sports drinks totalling 26CP. Morning BG 11.2 - bit high, but after yesterday happy with this. All in all I am more happy with this, not sure why I had the 15.5 and 22.8, but after QA this all fell into place. Next time I will probably have a bit more BI in the evening after. Hope this report helps others judge the best way to try and deal with this rubbish, only downside to this approach is it costs a fortune in gels/drinks! Phil |

As you said Whiskysmum, estimate with carbs and cals and using packages. I do weigh food when home especially pasta and potatoes. |

Topic: General Discussion / BD Pen Needles Best thing to do is to contact them your self's http://www.bd.com/uk/contact/ ,Could this be to do with the NHS trying to cut down on stock lines but strange thing is BD do sell there 4mm needles as shown on there product web site http://www.bd.com/uk/diabetes/page.aspx?cat=14153&id=31354 ,The other alternative for needles are pen manufactures also who supply needles but am not aware if the NHS fund these,I my self use to be user of the 3mm needles when was first DX 4 years ago but I use get awful bruising and bleeding and infection and dread lumps,I then went onto the 5mm two years ago and have found them excellent and much more manageable when injecting into site areas,Am also Sorry you will have to paste into the browser BD details |

Topic: General Discussion / Milking fingers causes low BG readings I think that if your finger is wet before you get the blood out, the blood sample will be diluted, which could give you a false 'low' reading. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Counting Carbohydrates Hi, I'm wondering how others count their carbohydrates:- by reading the nutritional labels on packages - by estimating the carbohydrate content or - by weighing food I nearly always - read the nutritional labels on packages or - estimate the carbohydrate content using my carbs and cals app or book |

Topic: General Discussion / Milking fingers causes low BG readings I was doing this on one side of my finger when the site on the other side on same finger (used in the morning) started to give a sample as well - 2 for 1 offer.XCeed meter can be useful as it requires a smaller sample (and can be topped up within a minute) unlike Xpert which needs larger volume, and if insufficient volume a new strip is required. Topic: General Discussion / BD Pen Needles I hope this isn't true. Diabetic nurse moved me onto these as didn't have enough flabby bits for larger needles (think started on 8mm then 6mm) but less of a problem now as have put on some weight. Will just wait and see as need to stock up in a few weeks. Topic: General Discussion / BD Pen Needles I normally use 5mm BD Micro-Fine pen needles. When I picked up my prescription a few days ago, my local Lloyd's Pharmacy told me that they couldn't get any 5mm BD needles and that I should get my GP to prescribe an alternative - which I did. I picked up that prescription from Lloyd's today and was told that they could only get the 8mm BD needles. I accepted these because my stock was low. The pharmacist told me that there was a problem with the manufacturer, which was likely to last over a month.I searched the internet for information and found a forum on diabetes.co.uk that had a topic entitled 'Withdrawal of BD 4mm pen needles'. It appears that BD are going to stop making 4mm pen needles (I didn't know that there were such things) and I wondered whether all the 4mm users were going over to the 5mm variety and causing a shortage. Has anybody else had these problems? Is there an alternative manufacturer of 5mm pen needles? |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetic Neuropathy Bowel Problems Hi Googum and youone,Again I'm replying from my experience of supporting others with this problem rather than personal experience but I'd agree that high fibre diet can be helpful (Normacol is in fact a vegetable fibre from sterculia plant). However I know it can be difficult if one is on other medications which tend to cause constipation ( e.g. some treatments for painful peripheral nerve problems). If one becomes very constipated you can get "spurious diarrhoea" or overflow of liquid stool past some hard stols which haven't cleared. On the other hand "autonomic neuropathy" can also directly cause diarrhoea. I have know loperamide ( Imodium) used judiciously to be helpful in addition to Normacol but of course one has to be very careful not to overdo it and cause constipation. |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetic Neuropathy Bowel Problems
I've had Type1 for 42 years this was a issue for me some times really bad, the solution for me was diet, yes I know it sounds to simple ,but TBH I was never clear of constipation until I changed my diet and got my hba1c below 8 the usual bran cereals kidney beans, bananas raspberries' etc. worked for me. its not a nice thing really upsetting wish you the best hope you overcome this quickly Type 1 MDI 42 years omnipod2 3 months |
