Topic: General Discussion / 7-day waking average

18.5 - 22:36pm - bedtime
- totally messed up night
- on the positive side really enjoyed going out for an indian meal to celebrate hubby's 49th birthday
- on the negative side messed up with estimating the carbs, I worked out 57g but should have been more like 87g!
- then had 2 choc digestives & 2 rich tea after bedtime test but with no QA which is what I usually do anyway because I don't like to take QA before going to bed to sleep.
15.2 - 07:57am - fasting

lantus decreases:
Tue 29.10 from 24u to 22u
Sat 02.10 from 22u to 20u
Tue 6.11 from 20u to 18u

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carbs n cals app

I use a mixture of both myfitnesspal and carbandcals apps. A lot of food whilst out etc isn't on carbs and cake but is easily found on myfitnesspal. I also gave the pocket carbs and cals book but only really use at home as never leave house without phone so have the apps for when I'm out. My mum was impressed by the apps when she first saw me using them!

I have delayed highs after Chinese too, now on the pump I extend the bolus which helps. But like novorapidboi I see a takeaway as a treat so don't worry too much about getting the dose perfectly right.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carbs n cals app

It is good.

I actually have the pocket size book with me at all times, it only has a small and large portion to view but its still really helpful when out and about.......

I feel like I keep banging on about this but the myfitnesspal app lets you search for your food and drink and then lets you add it to whatever meal time your having it in, then gives you a carb total at the end. Takes the whole carb counting to another level, and also keeps a record of what you have eaten.

It literally has pretty much everything you can think of from supermarket items, even LIDL and ALDI up here in Scotland, and has all the well known eateries and fast food establishments, and you can scan bar codes too if typing in a particularly long named product doesn't sound fun. It also remembers the items you have had before which makes it even more convenient.

Lol, I honestly don't work for them.........

Maybe not three hours afterwards, maybe an hour to an hour and a half.............

However, it will be different for everyone, so will need to be tested out a few times........ Smile

Also, the ratio of split can be played with also.......so 25% up front, the remaining after........but its good to start with a 50/50 split in the beginning.......

For me personally a take away is a treat and so if I don't pin the dose down perfectly it doesn't really matter......that's my logic anyway..... Cool

Thanks a lot. Wouldn't eat many myself either.

Rafa,

I find if I am high (cos I've overdone the gels or not enough QA on board) when I get back before dinner I will not correct, if it was a long/strenuous ride rather than a relaxed social thing I will lower my QA for the next meal regardless of BG and then check again at bed.

For 20-25 mins of running this might not be the case, at 12.8 not correcting does it drop anyway?

Phil

Hi Phil, i actually corrected and was 9.6 going to bed three hours later. I was 12.0 the next morning at 6am.

I guess maybe you could try it again tonight and see. Would also be good to see what happens, without eating any carbs.

Hm, interesting. It would have been interesting to know your bg level a) without the biscuits or b)during the night. I have a feeling that without the biscuits, you may have been just about right this morning. Do you inject for your biscuits?

Hi Louise,
I didn't inject for the biscuits because I really don't like to inject QA before going to bed to sleep.

I'm wondering if it still indicates that my lantus dose is still too high because I had 22g carbs with no QA insulin.

Topic: General Discussion / Endurance Exercise and BG

I have started training for a marathon and while it’s early days and the runs are no more than 20-25 minutes i am finding my BG higher when i come in from the run. For example 9.4 and then afterwards 12.8.

Should i correct when having my dinner then at 12.8?

Thanks

what did you have for the chinese........?

its would seem like a classic sign of delayed digestion due to high fat content maybe...........which would warrant a split dose.......

pumpers can use the dual wave or square wave bolus where all or some of the dose is delivered over a set time......

I had some sweet and sour chicken balls with boiled rice, prawn toast and chicken satay scewers. Weighed everything so fairly sure cp's and matching qa were correct.

By split dose do you mean half the qa dose before and then the other half three hours afterwards?

Thanks.

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / 1/2 units

Hi Karl,
I have this problem too, I am not as insulin sensitive as you it sounds and I love whole numbers. If you see the examples below from a dinner and before bed my CP's are both half values so at a ratio of 1:1 my QA is also calculated as a half value. My Novorapid pen doesn't do half units so I usually just round up. Alternatively you could just keep your CP's as whole numbers by rounding. If you use wierd ratios though then I guess you could still end up with decimal points.

Time 18:51 22:41
CP 5.5 1.5
BG 7.3 5.0
QA 5.5 1.5-1
BI 16 -
Ratio (QA:CP) 1:1 1:1
QA Site - -
BI Site - -
Type DINNR BED
Ketones - -

The round corrections setting is for rounding your QA dose to the nearest mmol/l (either 0.5 or 1), not the other way around I think. I can't find a way to round the QA once it has been calculated.

Cheers

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carbs n cals app

I think it should work on all devices, you may have to back up the device that has the app then restore that back up on the ipad etc.

It can really be quite confusing with the apple devices and itunes......

I have been android now for 6 months, so I cant really advise anymore.....

11.3 - 22:27pm - bedtime
- rich tea biscuits x 4 (5.6g carbs each = 22.4g total) - eaten after bedtime test - was just in one of those eating moods where once I'd had the taste of one biscuit i wanted another

If you want a good read that might help with a few pointers, then I recommend Phil Southerland's book Not Dead Yet:

Phil was until recently a professional cyclist and is the founder of Team Type 1 which has won the Race Across America twice.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carbs n cals app

Hi everyone, I'm new here and finished the dafne course in leicester about 6 weeks ago and found it great. I purchased the carbs n cals app on my ipad and assumed I would automatically have the full unlocked version on my iphone when I downloaded it. Does anybody know if you have to purchase the full version for each device or should 1 purchase of carbs and cals work on all apple devices ?

Topic: General Discussion / Endurance Exercise and BG

James,

I go on 6+ hour solo rides and do stop-test-start regularly, but group rides are often longer than this upto 15 hours in the summer, the weather (wind n rain) and profile also play a big part in the effort, I try not to sit on the front for too long on a long ride if I can help it, hide behind some of the bigger guys out of the wind Wink

I think I need to lower BI and try a few solo rides and play with the QA. Just annoying when go out on 6ish BG and stop 3-5 hours in with 20+ BG. On a dif day with dif weather/effort/speed/cadence etc... 5 hours in my BG could be 3ish! I need to keep testing on solo rides, I also need to find some slower GI carbs to have as well as the gels.

Phil

Have you tried testing at regular intervals when you do ride solo and are these rides of a similar length/duration/route to your group efforts? It might be of benefit to see if it highlights any trends rather than any hard and fast data because the group element will allow you to go further for longer, unless you always find yourself on the front in those situations! There is no getting away from the fact that you need to test in order to get the numbers but a few solitary stop-test-start rides should reduce your need on testing when in a group because you will have a better idea of what is going on (that is the theory at least, invariably experience has shown me that my body will throw in the occasional curve ball to keep me guessing).
