Topic: General Discussion / Flu Jab

Last Saturday at 8.10am..............definitely worth getting out of bed early on a Saturday morning for. Never missed the flu jab since being offered it 13 years ago. My doctor sends me a letter to remind me when the jab is due. Thank you Dr. Slight reaction at the jab site this year, tender for 24 hours. Other than that, not noticed anything different Rolling Eyes

Topic: General Discussion / Coeliac Disease

At DAFNE we were told coeliac disease is more common in type 1 diabetics as it is auto-immune.

Just interested to know what people's experiences have been with it. Were you diagnosed before/after the diabetes? What made you suspect Coeliac disease?

Thanks everyone for your quick response. I will get to the GP ASAP and read up on the sickness section in the orange handbook Cool
Recently did DAFNE 23rd-27th Sept at Beckenham Hospital and thankfully not had to use sick day rules yet.

Topic: General Discussion / Happy World Diabetes Day, everyone!

I feel so grateful for all the wonderful medical help I have had over the past 46 years to enable me to study, graduate and work after developing type 1 diabetes as a teenager.
I am very concerned to read about people in other countries who need insulin but are unable to obtain it and political prisoners who are denied proper food, medical attention or essential medicine for their condition. I know I would not be alive now were it not for the availability of insulin due to the work of Banting and Best.

Topic: General Discussion / Flu Jab

Hi Nat-Sav,
I think the flu vaccine is very worthwhile. I had mine at my doctors last month.I never seem to have any significant problems with the vaccine apart from a very slightly tender arm at the immjnisation site about 24-48 hours after the injecgion. It settles quickly and although I do get blood sugar problems with infections this never seems to occur for me with immunisations.
Of course any immunisation stimulates on's immune system and this might raise the sugars a bit some some of us.
I think it may take about 10 days for the immunisation to be effective so theoretically it could be possible to catch flu in few days zfter the inje tio if one is sneezed on by someone suffering from flu!
Best wishes
Stephen

Nat-Sav
it's worth getting your flu jab sorted ASAP - in case your GP runs out. I've had the fluu jabs from day one and never had any problems . You don't want to get the flu.

Topic: General Discussion / Flu Jab

Had mine 08/10/13 this year here at work...so no appointment problems.
I have recently had to visit three different surgeries: mine, one for mobile diabetic retina camera shots and also to my wife's surgery....all three had walk-in arrangements in place for flu jabs.
Just go to the surgery and hopefully yours will have the same arrangement.
My bloods always go a little high for 10 days or so afterwards as your body becomes somewhat insulin resistant whilst fighting the 'infection'. Easily coped with by compensation though. If unlucky and more severely affected - apply sick day rules. Go for it.
Regards
Garry

Topic: General Discussion / Flu Jab

Hi,

Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with the flu jab? E.g. flu-like symptoms following the jab? Changes in blood glucose control / ketones?
I think I might have missed my opportunity this year, (not being able to reach my GP surgery because the phone's always engaged) but I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons.

Thanks.

I'm buying my work colleagues and myself some cakes today. If they ask if I can eat them, I'm going to bore them to death with facts about diabetes Wink

I've just ordered pods so will just save them up and order the new labels with next shipment.

I love the pods! As a trial I went 3 weeks on MDI under supervision of my consultant as we couldn't stop the hypos I was having etc. I felt so rubbish and sugar levels were rising that I was put back on pod. Get minimal insulin now but feel so much better. I too have had a few failures but still much better than MDI Laughing

Hi
I'm still WIP but my insulin has also dropped ,during 11am to 4am I take very little now, feel so much better.
The pods not perfect, but it's the future
Just got two more boxes labels are already attacted, will take box to post office tomorrow see what happens

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Counting Carbohydrates

Hi wiskeysmum,
I have used all the methods you describe. When I started carbohydrate counting in 1967, I was given some kitchen scales from the diabetes ward and used to weight everything. I have over the years tended to estimate CHO especially when not at home but since the DAFNE course in October I have been much stricter and have started using nutritional scales at home. I have found the scales from Lloyds pharmacy a help. It will even calculate the carbohydrate content of weighed food. I find I am very sensitive to insulin and am managing on an insulin pump which delivers fractions of a unit. Mistakes in carbohydrate counting can cause havok with blood sugars !
Best wishes,
Stephenbrowne

Topic: General Discussion / Endurance Exercise and BG

I was 6.1 an hour and a half before a run last night so had one choclate rice cake (1cp) and i was 11.1 going out. Ran for 25 minutes and was 10.8 afterwards. Had a shower and then before dinner roughly 40-50 minutes after the run i was 12.7. Had five cps and corrected +2. I was then 4.6 going to bed so was a little bit corncerned so had a small drop of orange juice. Woke up at 6am for work and i was 8.7. I know it was out of range but i was happy with that. Last week i went out for the same run and i was 7.7 and took no cp and dropped to 4.9 after it. Maybe when i am between 6-8 before a run i don't need to take a cp??
