Topic: General Discussion / DP and new breakfast

Hi Guys,

A long while ago I was "told" to have 8 raw almonds with my oats at breakfast. So I have done for about 15 years. So breakfast is 20g quick oats, 125mL Trim milk, 1 small apple chopped and added to milk and oats and 8 almonds. Can not remember but I must have thought the advice made sense or I would not have adopted it as a mantra.

Topic: General Discussion / DP and new breakfast

I have tried low carb for breakfast and I seemed to get a rise by mid morning, but this was some time ago.

I originally tried to Almond milk, but have added raw Almonds before meals and bed, only a few, seems to be working, not sure if this is luck or not as only tried this for a few weeks.

nice.......have you tried to have a low carb, low gi breakfast to see/ confirm the DP?

obviously carb free would definitely confirm it.....

do you have these almonds before you go to bed to give you the 4 and 8 in the morning.........

Topic: General Discussion / DP and new breakfast

Hi,

This isn't so much a question as news. I have suffered from Dawn Phenomen for ages or so I thought, rising throughout the morning, not sure where I read it, but it was something similar to the fiollowing info...

http://www.joybauer.com/photo-gallery/best-foods-for-type-2-diabetes/Almonds.aspx

Basically Almonds slow the break down of carbs removing spikes which I think I was getting after breakfast rather than too much DP. I used to have Quaker oat so simple with semi-milk, changed this to Alpro Almond Unsweetened Milk (not the best tasting, but getting used to it) and for the last few weeks my BG has been between 4 and 8 which is unheard of for me Very Happy

Following this I am now adding 10 - 20 Almonds prior to any main meal to see if this can cut other mealtime spikes.

Hope this info is useful to others.

Topic: General Discussion / Pump Holiday...?

I have chronic pancreatitis and now have post-prandial diabetes; a CT scan in 2011 showed my pancreas is 3/4 dead. Have been told its rare by the consultants...less than 1% of diabetics. I am possibly still producing some insulin (in mornings only!), am very insulin sensitive and they now think I have something going on with hormones that are affecting my BGs, hence the hospital investigations!

Topic: General Discussion / Pump Holiday...?

Hi Helen,
The trial was due to my rare form of diabetes (linked to my chronic pancreatitis), and constant hypos; he wanted to see what would happen if I had no insulin except to correct highs! I currently average 4 units a day with the pump. I am now going into hospital for further tests as am still having occasional hypos but also sugars dip in the low 4s a few hours after eating breakfast, with no insulin taken!
I am on the Omnipod pump and love it, have had a couple of pod failures but feel loads better on it.
Hope you get sorted
x

Topic: General Discussion / Pump Holiday...?

Hi Vicki,
I am curious as to why the consultant thought that a trial without the pump was warranted. I am just sick of the damn thing and seem to be having more set failures than is acceptable. I am finding it not as reliable as I want/need.

Topic: General Discussion / Pump Holiday...?

As a trial, with guidance from my consultant, I had a pump holiday for 3 weeks..and hated it! My BGs were all over the place, I felt tired all the time and just generally crap; as soon as was back on the pump felt better...and told consultant not to do that to me again!!!

one meal at a time and monitor over atleast 3 days before making changes to other mealtimes. Also agree with the 0.5 increment

as alturn said, one meal at a time is best practice...........and 0.5 incriments in the best for most insulin delivery pens...... Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Pump Holiday...?

Only been on it about 11 months and so far haven't felt the need for it and would probably be put off by the need to increase the background insulin doses and insulin/carb ratios.

However if its all getting too much for you then you should go back to MDI. And at the very least you can gauge how simple/not simple it will be for you in case you feel like doing it again in the future.

Good luck whatever you decide......... Smile

If I am over 13 at the end of exercise, then I'll definitely correct. Perhaps with a correction factor of half of what I would inject if I hadn't exercised.

Hi Warwick,

Yes that's what i decided to do. Had 6 cps and took qa of 6 + correction of 2 instead of 4. Three hours later i was 7.9 so was happy enough with that. Thanks for the reply.

I would only change one ratio at a time, and then by 0.5 increments, e.g. 2.5:1 to 3.0:1 (Units:CPs).

Topic: General Discussion / Pump Holiday...?

Has anyone decided to have a "pump holiday" and to go back onto multiple injections?

I am feeling a bit world weary and am contemplating this for say a month. I am interested to find out what prompted you to decide a break was an advantage and whether or not you got anything out of it.

Motivation is related to being able to pay less attention to the minutiae. I accept the HbA1c will go up.

Any thoughts?

When you are connected to wifi go to the setup screen and press the "Download all images" button - hopefully that will solve your problem

Suggest you check with your Hospital Diabetes Team - they should see you when you go into hospital for any reason, and will be able to give you advice about what you need to do.

THanks a lot guys. I'm getting it in January some time. It's specifically to see what's happening during the night, dawn phenomenon and all that. I suffer from poor digestion too at present and I'm sure that it isn't helping my levels.
