Topic: General Discussion / Carbs & Cals Book - pocket version

For anyone who has a copy of the above, i know it's guestimate but as a rule of thumb out of the 2 portion sizes do you go for the smaller or the larger portion size?

Thanks in advance for any replies Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Carbs and Cals Book - large / pocket?

I've got the both the large & the pocket versions but just wondering who else has got this book and whether you've got the large or pocket version or both like me.

For anyone who's got both how do you cope with the small version? After using the large version with 6 portion sizes of food on each page i just can't get used to only 2 portion sizes. How do you use the book when out and about and only 2 portion sizes to go from?

Hi Gill,
Thanks so much for your comments Smile
How often do you have to charge the Contour as not needed with the Xceed (as you know Smile )?
Cheers,
Anele.

Hi Anele,

You're welcome!

I charge the meter each time it reaches 1 bar. Also it charges up when it's plugged into your pc.

Topic: General Discussion / The Best Meter?

Hi all,
I was wondering what is the most favoured Meter? Confused

I currently use an Optium Xceed but my dad is a Pharmacist and he gave me a Glumen GM to try and have also received a free Contour USB meter recently.

I haven't used the Contour yet and have only used the Glucomen once but certainly the finger pricker device for the Glucomen is really good and the Contour one looks good also but haven't tried that yet.

Certainly, I find that the original finger pricker device that came with the Xceed was sore (for me anyway) but I got a new Blue one when on my DAFNE course last year which is better and thankfully takes the same lancets.

I like the Xceed as it also takes Ketone test strips but thankfully I haven't had to use them much so not sure how much of a difference that would make when comparing the other meters?

Has anyone struggled getting lancets or strips for either the Glucomen or ther Contour as so far I've never had an issue with getting strips for the Xceed?

Any comments/thoughts would be greatly appreciated Very Happy

Hi Anele46,

I'm currently using the Contour USB meter which i personally think is fabulous! If you have a pc then you can download the Glucofacts deluxe software and basically with your meter just plug and play ie download all your readings, graphs etc. You can of course just use the meter as an ordinary meter.

The finger pricker for my Optium Xceed died on me and i had to get another one. I've still got my Optium Xceed meter incase i need it for ketones. I much prefer the finger pricker which came with my Contour USB meter, it seems much stronger.

I don't have any problems getting lancets or strips for the Contour USB meter.

Topic: General Discussion / Basal Insulin Testing

novorapidboi26 said:
You can carry out a basal test at any time, you are always best to get an overnight test done first, allowing you to get your morning levels right, then you can do a daytime test, either between breakfast and lunch, lunch and dinner, etc........you could even try a carb free breakfast and dinner if you feel up for it............

the problem with Lantus, or a single dose background, is you could find you need more or less Lantus in the daytime than you do overnight, so you could risk waking high, or going low overnight........and you cant really accommodate for it unless you split the dose..... Wink

Thanks so much for your reply, it's really helpful.

I did an overnight test last night & have my alarm clock set for the next couple of nights. Mad

BEDTIME (2314PM) = 4.2
0255AM = 6.7
0806AM = 7.3

Re the 0300am test, does this have to be spot on 0300am?

Topic: General Discussion / Guestimating Hba1c

Hi,

Just done my Hba1c. It was 7.37% doing it using thebatoutofhull's way & about 7.4% doing it novorapidboi26's way. I got the 3 months results (last 90 days) from the "my blood glucose diary" on here. When i get my result on the accu-chek site it does give me a message of "Keep up the good work—you're very close to target!" Myself i'm, really annoyed now Evil or Very Mad because my last one in December was 6.8% & i had my DSN phoning me to congratulate me.

Topic: General Discussion / Pain after injecting

Hi,

I use Lantus and inject into my thighs. What i get is like a slight stingy feeling for a coulpe of seconds. I brought this subject up on another forum and can confirm a couple of posts saying about it having an acicid substance in it.
Also as novorapidboi26 says Make sure the needle is changed for every injection and that injection sites are being rotated.

Topic: General Discussion / High BS

Hi All,

This morning on waking at 8.49am i did a blood test (hubby thought i may have been hypo as i was sweating & huffing & puffing) & my bs was 13.7. I'm not a breakfast person until somewhere between 1000am - 1100am. What would you have done about the high bs ie done an extra injection, do a correction dose when i have my breakfast.......?

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carbs how much?

Hi,

If carbs add up to eg 20g or 50g then i know on a 1: 1 ratio you would take 2u or 5u of insulin but if it was 28g or 56g how much would that be then?
