Topic: General Discussion / Background Insulin re Beditme Testing

Before i have my each of my main meals ie breakfast, lunch & dinner i always test first then either inject & eat or eat & inject.....i'm on Humalog QA.
When it comes to supper time sometimes i have supper sometimes not, depends if i'm hungry or not. If i'm having supper i always have it downstairs whilst watching tv then do my test a bit later when i go to bed. Am i doing this the right way round or should i be testing before i have my supper? i'm on Lantus BI, which i believe lasts approx 24hrs.

Thank you for any help about this. Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Injections - Best Injection Sites

Hi,

I'm on Humalog 3 x per day & Lantus before bed.

I inject Humalog into my stomach. My DSN said to draw an imaginary smile under my belly button so it's easier to rotate injection sites.

I inject Lantus into my right or left thigh. I've only just started doing it here as i also used to do this into my stomach. Unaware about this, on my last appt, my DSN said to make sure i never change my injection sites ie where i inject Humalog & where i inject Lantus.

Why was this? (I never asked)

Where do you inject?

What are the best / most asorbable injection sites?

I've just been given the new 4mm needles, they are sooo small, you don't need to pinch any fat....
Sometimes when i inject my Lantus into my thigh/s it does bleed a little.

Topic: General Discussion / Lancets

Hi,

How often do you change the lancets in your lancing device?

When i saw my DSN for a check yesterday she said i should change them after each use.

I've sometimes left the changing of my lancets until my fingers hurt but i'm going to TRY & get into the habit of changing them each day or certainly every other day....we'll see Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Humalog - Injecting, Before or After?

Do you inject

1. Before a meal (i know this should be done 15 mins before or immediately before)?
2. At what BS level would you inject before...?
or
3. After a meal?

Topic: General Discussion / Type 2 Diabetes & Carbs & Cals Book

Hi,

My MIL is Type 2 diabetic (i'm type 1) & i was wondering if the carbs & cals visual book would be any good for her. I've got the large & the pocket versions. My MIL was diagnosed in June last year (2010).

Topic: General Discussion / Testing Routines

I know this can sometimes be an individual thing & i know about testing when we are ill or after / before excersise etc but do you have a testing routine ie
1. certain days / times when you test before meals
2. certain days / times when you test after meals
3. certain days / times inbetween meals, also do you test 1 hour or 2 hours inbetween meals?

Topic: General Discussion / Chocolates - Help!

novorapidboi26 said:
I would pick my desired number of chocolates, work out the carb content, and if possible have them after a meal, so I could include them in my meal injection.

However, if it was between meals I would just inject separately, taking note at my next meal that I might not be on target and that I dont need to correct my BG......

Happy belated birthday, hope you had a great day..... Wink

Thank you Novorapidboi26 Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Carbs & Cals Books?

Hi,

Just bought my copy of the Carbs & Cals visual guide to carb counting, which i think is fantastic! As far as i can see no maths needed, just match your portion size to the photo in the book. I'm considering also getting the Carbs & Cals visual pocket size guide to keep in my handbag.

I've been wondering what anyone thinks of the Carbs and Cals book as opposed to the Collins Gem Carb Counter?

Topic: General Discussion / Meters

Meters
Hi,

I'm using the Optium Xceed atm which i was given by my DSN. Only use it for the BS testing & not as yet for ketone testing. Haven't had a backup / spare meter for ages so while out shopping today saw the Accu-check Aviva Nano & was impressed by it's cute little dinky size. I checked with my GP surgery to make sure i'd be able to get the test strips on repeat prescription (as i do with my other meter), the answer was yes & tomorrow there'll be test strips & an Accu-check Aviva Nano waiting for me Smile

I'm aware there are problems from time to time with the battery compartment on the Nano but hey ho i've got a spare meter which will be my Optium Xceed, for the time being anyway.

What meter/s do you use & what do you think of it?

Cheers for any replies Smile

Topic: Questions for HCPs / BG Results

Hi Dave,
Yes i have got a built in web cam and i do use skype, Could you not copy and paste your charts then either put them into a word pad or just copy and paste straight into an email. I think we can exchange email adds using the message inboox on the left hand side of here. I ordered the book "CARBS AND CALS FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES BY CHRIS CHEYETTE AND YELLO BALOLIA," and it arrived on Friday Very Happy. I am becoming familiar with the fact a 1: 1 ratio means it's 1 unit of QA insulin to every 10 carbs eaten. I had porridge and 1 round of roberts thick sliced bread this morning for breakfast which looking at the photos in the carbs and cals book would be about 37cp (porridge) and 20cp bread = 57cp & i did 6u of QA humalog insulin. I saw my diabetic specialist nurse ( a new one at the gp surgery) on Thursday, she said to alter my insulin to 5-6u QA humalog from 10u, stick to 10u at lunch ( usually a sandwich / crisps / soup but not all three), 12 - 14u at dinner (spag bol, chilli, casserole...) & stick to 34u at bedtime (sometimes have supper sometimes not). Hope me dribbling on makes some sense to you, lol Laughing

Topic: Questions for HCPs / BG Results

Hi there Daveyboy,
Thank you for your reply. You're very lucky being able to go on a DAFNE course & like you say you've learnt all about the ratios, hypos, tablets etc, maybe you could teach me about this ratio thing and the way it's all written down ie 1:1, 0.5:1, 3:1 etc when i see it all on here on the forums. The book i bought looks excellent if i could maybe learn how to use it and maybe alongside my diabetic specialist nurse who i go to see at my gp surgery. They don't do a dafne course in Warrington & i don't have the time to be travelling miles away to one or to be staying away from home due to family ie hubby, daughter & son. I guess i'll just have to carry on trying to learn from the forums on here.

Topic: Questions for HCPs / BG Results

Hi Marke,
Thanks for the reply. It's the first time i've entered anything into the forums which is probably why i didn't put any insulin details. I'm on Humalog (QA) before breakfast, lunch & dinner then Lantus (BI) at bedtime.
