Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE and Employers Hi , i did a DAFNE course in June , i was told i would have to take it as paid sick but it would not be added to my sickness total for the year . When i first started at my place of employment i was told that due to the DDA ( as in post above ) Employers have to be seen to be making Reasonable adjustments . And there is a current advert on the telly at mo that states this too . |

Topic: General Discussion / Dawn Phenomenon Hi i too suffer with DP , 3am checks are showing big dips during the night ( not good as i suffer with hypo unawareness !!) and then massively high blood sugars in the moring 18+ , i am now waiting for a pump as hypo unawareness and DP are two factors as to why a pump will help . |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetes............. Hmm i guess i agree with Iain , i have had diabetes for 30 years since i was 10 and when people see me injecting a common response is ' Doesnt that get on your nerves ?' my response is 'No its more of an inconvenience really ' but after having diabetes for so long it also becomes a habit quite a few times i will do my injection and have to ask my husband or sons if theyve seen me take it ! Does anyone else do this ? |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetes............. Claire,I only got to 35 weeks and 37 weeks with my first and last but with the middle one there was a discrepancy of 3 weeks in the dates mine was 1 week late and theirs well you can guess the rest. I was told that all diabetics have big babies due to the amount of insulin in their systems and that is why they scan you so much because their shoulder and tummy areas increase rapidly hence the reason they induce you early before you get to that stage. |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetes............. My kids are all healthy apart from the two youngest being diabetic, which is hereditary in my family!Good lluck with conceiving claire, if you go with the flow of things and keep working at your bgs, im sure will all come good. All three of my children were born early at 11lb+ ( BUT that had nothing to do with my diabetes) Good luck |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetes............. Thanks Nat!That makes me feel so much better! Im definately a stress head and really think that must help to make my bg's high. When i was pregnant i found it easy to control because i was doing it for a better reason... but now i find it so hard to have good bg's because it seems so long before the consultant will agree to me trying for a baby. Last year i was in intensive care with ketoacidosis and my hba1c was 16 then... but now ive worked hard to get it to 10% and i just dont know how much harder i can do... feel like giving up! i know that once im pregnant i will control my bg's much better and be able to resist all the 'bad' stuff but am so scared to conceive until ive got a good hba1c as the first baby i conceived (before i was diagnosed with type 1) i lost... and i know a type 1 who went through the whole 9 months and then had a still birth.. it terrifies me! To be honest the hospital scare me more because they're constantly talking about the risks of me getting pregnant without having perfect hba1c to conceive (they say 6%!!!) ... i say '6%!!!! they must be bloody joking, its going to be hard enough for me to get to 8%) ... so they agreed i can start taking folic when im 8%. i breastfed my son for 8 months.. but when he was first born the nurse gave my baby a bottle because she said if i didnt bottle feed my baby would go in intensive care (which i later found out was a lie!! ...but thats another story- they just couldnt be bothered to show me how to breastfeed) Thankyou so much Nat, because i rarely meet any type 1's who have been pregnant let alone had 3 healthy babies and still lived a 'normal' life |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetes............. ClaireYou will be fine to be honest I don't know what my hba1c was on the last count. My first daughter is was well in the 13s as like I said I was so desperate I just went ahead and conceived. I do find though that once I am pregnant things settle down quite well although I am totally white flour intolerant so all the nice stuff was off the list. My babies all varied in weight due to the diabetes 6lb 15oz at 5 weeks early, 9lb 10oz but one week late and 8lb 15oz at 3 weeks early but both my husband and I were 8lb babies so was it all diabetes or something in our genes!! I think as long as you aren't eating chocolate and really bad stuff day in and day out you have to be happy and you can't think that you can't have a family because of it. I was certainly more concerned the second time round and it took me 4 years to conceive and stress certainly plays a big part in your blood sugars. When my middle child was born she was so quick 1 hour 20 mins from start to finish I didn't have time to go on a sliding scale infusion and gave birth on one banana ha ha !!! I have no worries over the children, my first daughter was born with low sugars and they put her on a glucose drip and I didn't know any better but with my second daughter (the banana) I refused to let her have the glucose and demanded that they let me breast feed her as I had read that breast milk (or colostrom - excuse spelling) was better at regulating blood sugars and after a good old feed her sugars were perfect. My son had other (non diabetic related) complications so he had to go to special care and have glucose but it took him a good couple of days to regulate his blood sugars. Just make sure you take your folic acid as that is very important to and remember that you still have to live and with all the control in world doesn't always mean things work out perfectly so just do your best. |

Topic: General Discussion / Exhaustion Hi Athena,Just to let you know that since i was diagnosed with diabetes my bg has run consistently high and exhaustion is not the word! When my bg is between 16-late 20's i can hardley move my body because i am so tired, like my body is shutting down and if i shut my eyes for 2 seconds id fall asleep... then when i finally got my hba1c lower it made me feel normal again. Whenever my bg is high my body is exhausted. The only thing i can do is take a couple of units and sleep it off or if i force myself to go for a half hour swim it brings my bg back to normal and i feel ok again. I just assumed that everyone who was diabetic suffered the same sort of exhaustion, but i suppose we all have different side affects. Maybe i should talk to my consultant about this too! could be anemia? |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetes............. Hi Nat,Really nice to hear that someone has healthy kids, it is a bit scary when youre pregnant hey? (i got diabetes during pregnancy, but was very controlled and gave birth to a healthy boy) ... 3 years later and my hba1c is terrible! was 16% then 13% now 10% ..but im sure its higher then 10 now ... my consultant would be happy if i tried to conceive at 8% but i just cant seem to get it down... hopefully now ive been on dafne it will really help. Can i ask what your hba1c was when you conceived? A girl in my dafne class said hers was 10% and her baby was fine and then she got better control throughout her pregnancy. Although, ive been told conception and the first 8 weeks is the most important for good control. The more desperate i become the more i 'rebel' against the diabetes and give up. On the dafne course they said the risk of a child getting diabetes with a type 1 mother is 1 in 50-100, but for a father with type 1 the risk of the baby getting it is 1 in 20! so at least this is a positive (well for us anyway) |

I think something different - I think you should consider upping your ratio for lunchtime to 1:1.5. You seem to be getting a rise in sugars after lunch to a greater or lesser extent each day. To go from 1:3 all the way down to 1:1 seems to be a big leap. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Simple Form to assist Meal CP Calculation John / Simon,This spreadsheet was generally designed to be of help when there is a need to correct due to high or low Blood Sugars. Initially I designed this on an Apple Mac computer, but due to some use for people without mac I adjusted the spreadsheet to work on Windows Excel as well. Basically you set the ideal range for the test, and the calculation is made if the BG reading is outside the ideal range. As suggested the spreadsheet can be changed the adjust labels for the fields, but I wanted to keep the labels small to avoid filling too much of the screen, especially as netbook screens are quite small. I did think of whether to use the carb contents based on per piece, but decided against it as I found it difficult to judge the amount of rice or pasta, but everybody is different, and I think the spreadsheet could be changed to use both, though the easier option would be to use the carb content per piece and just input 100g for each piece. I will have a look into changing this. The only issue I can see is that the calculation based on per 100g does not always equal the same as what the label advises for the portion. i.e. Cadbury Caramel Chocolate bar = 62.8g per 100g (6.28CPs). The bar I tested weighed in at 50g, therefore the calculation would equal 3.18CPs, but the bar indicates 2.95CPs per bar. Now the question is what is correct? The difference is small, but if you consider several items of food combined may not equal the same when it is calculated, so I opted for the option based on the weight rather than the 'per piece' option. If this could be set up as something for everybody I feel the food list would need to be blank, and allow anybody to add the foods they prefer. Simon, if you are interested in looking at the spreadsheet, send me a message with your email address and I can send it to you to see if you think something could be developed to accompany this or use parts of it in something else. Regards Paul |

Topic: General Discussion / Initial thoughts........... Yes your results do look good. You might have to play around with how much you split it by and for what food but glad it seemed to work.I have made an appointment for next week to meet up with my Dafne administrator as just can't seem to find the solution to the whole process. |

Topic: General Discussion / Exhaustion Thanks Marke. I just thought that diabetes makes you tired as I have always been very tired with it and I assumed that all the mucking around with regimes was making me feel worse for the moment. i am sure it will improve and was just looking for tips for what other people had tried. However, hte hospital has already given me an appointment and I think they thought that becaseu my BI was nearly sorted that that would be me now better. I should e-mail again and see if i can go back to them. Thanks for your view MArke and to all the o thers too. Makes me feel less isolated. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Simple Form to assist Meal CP Calculation Hello Paul.. had a chance now to look at your spreadsheet and think I am (just about!) clear on the operation. It does a great job and, as a side benefit, the personal setup causes a close look at ones’s current regime assumptions! It is the next stage of the basic spreadsheet I set up to calculate (Regular) Meal CPs but with no attempt to assess Insulin rqmts. Your calc is more sophisticated technically and looks good too! You did ask for comments(!), so here are mine, from the setup phase: For additional user clarity: Put ‘Name Range’ at top of Range names (b1) Replace ‘Ideal’ with ‘Mid-range’ (e1) Replace ‘Meal’ with ‘Meal Range Name’ (a15) Append ‘before Meal’ after BG Reading (a16) Append ‘Units required’ after ‘Adjustment’ (a17) Also we tended to use ‘Correction’ rather than ‘Adjust, ment’ Replace ‘Meal’ with ‘Meal Name’ (g7) Replace ‘CP Count’ with ‘Meal CP calculated from list below’ (g15) Append ‘(if required)’ to ‘Manual Adjustment’ (g16) Append ‘Required’ to Insulin Injection’ (g17) On the system side I would suggest: Could the predefined-choice entries be made scrollable as per Dafne Online? The Food names be structured (basicitem) (subtype) Brand eg ‘Chicken peri peri birdseye’ I realize this is a user thing but changing would start everybody off in the right direction and also makes identification more rapid and comparisons can be made more easily. I found only about 50% items in my list had a weight unit of measure so would be good if you could enable system to also work from entry of quantity of other UOMs such as as you have already included in your list. (or have I missed something?). The list ideally needs to be easily A5 printable for pre meal reference. . I have this, manually maintained, and use it every day as portion sizes are pretty standard. It would also be good if you could add a feature which, when a meal CP has been calculated, would enable that meal or course, named by the user to be added to a Meal/course List maintained on a second worksheet page. This list again to be printable on A5 for pre meal reference. That’s about it I think .. hope all is clear . I can send you my CP list if you wish but it is very simple but seems to have topped out at around 130 items. Keep up the good work! Cheers, John |

Topic: General Discussion / Initial thoughts........... This is the ret of the results showing my dawn phenomonon..........I think I might try and up my lunchtime ratio to 1.5:1. If this does send me low at dinner then I might need to consider splitting the dose. I will consult with my nurses about how much and when........ Any more comments are very welcome..... |

I have never heard of splitting either. I also thought you don't do a correction after a hypo - but this would have made your readings worse :-( |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetes............. Hi, I have been diabetic for 19 years. I was diagnosed when I was 19 right in the middle of that growing up stage. I went through my down times but I came out of it the other side stayed with my partner who was great never saw it for anything other than a good diet and jab a few times a day. We got married and I went to all my doctors appointments to find out about the chances of getting pregnant etc and without knowing I had already conceived. I stuck to my diet as closely as possible and at 35 weeks gave birth to a lovely baby girl. For four years I controlled my diabetes ready to have another baby but nothing happened, I gave up basically and what happened number 2 came along and a healthy baby girl again. A year after her birth and after caring for my mum who had been diagnosed with cancer and I was drinking nightly became pregnant again and this time a healthy baby boy! Although in the ideal world by HBA1C could have been better but with good ish control and help and support it all worked out well and they are now 13, 9, 7 and no diabetes yet!!! |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetes............. Everyone has a fair point and i wouldnt rule out anyones opinion. I only got diagnosed 4 years ago, but my brother has had type 1 for about 24 years ... so i did grow up with it... and yes i agree it doesnt have to 'rule' your life, but it does stop you from doing some of the things you want to do, just like other conditions/diseases/illnesses. My brother was desperate to be a stunt man.. wasnt allowed... then join the royal marines...wasnt allowed... be a scuba diving instructor ... wasnt allowed (but he fought for this through PADI for a year and became one). Children with diabetes do have to adapt to it, they cant always do the same things as other children. Just like as adults we have to adapt to it and i suppose it is how you deal with it that is important. Although it is not 'stopping' me from getting pregnant, i would never risk conceiving until my Hba1c is what it should be, therefore having diabetes and waiting to be able to conceive is a HUGE inconvenience. Diabetes doesnt have to be as negative as i generally think it is, but at the moment when all i want in the world is baby, it doesnt feel easy or convenient!Hopefully, now ive done dafne and found this site i can get advice and opinions from other diabetics, not just health professionals. |

Topic: General Discussion / Initial thoughts........... I do start to know that I am over about 12 these days but unfortunately getting use to the feeling as not managing to stay in target either hypo or high most days. I hardly eat anything a bowl of cereal for breakfast usually the same for lunch and I might not have any tea and just a slice of bread before bed.We were told that over about 12u insulin doesn't work so well so to split the does over about a 30 minute time period or basically some before you eat and some when you finish. I just don't know where to go now with it all! |
