Topic: General Discussion / Hypo

I think I would personally have treated the hypo with some quick acting stuff just to bring me up as you don't know how quick your food will take to work and I would have injected myself during the meal. But everyone seems to cope/manage in different ways.

hi im a type 1 and have been for 24 yrs, i did feel quite negatitve after watching it, i thought it was educational for those who dont have good control, hopefully to push them in the right direction. i completely agree with type 1 and type 2, they need to make it clear that type 1's are not associated with being obese!!!

Its given to type 2 diabetics who are so because there pancreas doesnt produce enough insulin, or there cells are resitant to the insulin...............

A guy in my dafne course was on them as he was resitant, metformin also inhibits the release and or production of gluagen from the liver and slows the absorbtion of glucose into the blood.

He was quite big you see, the more active your muscles are the more 'doors' if you like are created for the unsulin to unlock, making you less resistant........

Keep me posted..........if you want to keep in touch by email or anything we can swap addreses though PM......

Hey ur good! no worries about rabbling on, it makes alot of sense what your saying. I really appreciate you taking the time to look at my situation because I was questioning myself is it worth trying soo hard and still no good results. Will give your ideas a go then I do think there is a possibility i am insulin resistant never heard of that medication before. Cheers

Your corrections seem a bit out....

For example at 10 am you were 9.6 and had 3 correctional units, which should bring you down, according to DAFNE, 6-9mmol/l.......when above 12mmol/l you usually need more

Its much the same story with rest, but the interesting thing is that even though you are over correcting your readings are still high??

This must suggest either your BI or you need more QA....

You can see that your nightime correction was given, which is right in my eyes for 16.8, which should of brought you down on target....it didnt, you stayed roughly the same.......

I would try and avoid carbs before bed, for testing purposes and try that dose again, I expect it will not hold you steady, bump it up a unit or two and try again.......

Unfortunately you might not be able to get single figured readings if your experiencing the dawn phenomonon, but you should still find a dose that gets u the lowest you can go without hypo at night........

Once you have found a dose that your happy with you start on the QA, it would be good if you didnt have to go above 3:1 but you might need to.......

Another option is medication like metformin which helps with insulin resistance.....

I have rabbled on a bit, I just have so many ideas and really want to help you..

Topic: General Discussion / The Hospital - Channel 4

I watched it and it has been discussed extensively on the Diabetes UK support forum with some positive and negative opinions...

As a diabetic who is knowledgabe, thanks to DAFNE, I wasnt effected by it in any way...as I know what to do now...

I think that it did show a very real situation that is happening around the country, and that more of these people need the basic eductaion to have good control....

What it didnt do is distinguish between type 1 and type 2, alot of non diabetics may have got the message that we are all over wieght and dont bother to take care of ourselves, resulting in a huge burden for the NHS......

Overall it could of been more effective, and sympathetic to the diabetic population, but that isnt why they made the show, its all about money, the NHS, and how we should all be trying our best to keep costs down.......

As far as the complications go, there was no suprises, as DAFNE illustrated, maybe apart from the pregnancy, but I wont have to deal with that..................

I personally think making the effort to control my condition is without any difficultie.........getting good control on the other hand is another story....

not neccasirly, the best way to start off is to split it down the middle, then move on from there.......thats how I done it......

Now I am on more in the evening (26), than I am in the morning (17), this keeps me in the 11-12 mark when I wake, dawn phenomonon...

What was your result before bed and in the morning with that dose...??

Topic: General Discussion / The Hospital - Channel 4

Hi All,

The most recent episode of The Hospital was shown on Channel 4 this week and is also available to watch on 4 on demand. It centres around diabetes in young people and the health professionals that treat them. I was just wondering if anyone else saw it and what they thought of it?

I'm in the 15 - 25 year old age bracket they were discussing, I've only been diabetic for a couple of years, I've got fairly good control, (especially after Dafne) and I've had no complications so far. But I just felt as I watched it that it was really negative. I don't deny that complications can happen in young people, and obviously we do have a responsibility to keep ourselves healthy to the best of our ability, but I came away from watching it feeling completely depressed, and I just really wanted to know if anyone else picked up on this too?

For the moment I haven't shown it to my family and friends, I think it would terrify them even more than me! (It has some very brief surgical scenes). I would really appreciate someone else's perspective on this.

Thanks,
Laura.

Topic: General Discussion / Dawn Phenomenon

Hi, I experience DP but have noticed that that my morning BG is much better when I have a pernod before bed.

I don't normally drink but had some on holiday and noticed my morning BG was better, I had one drink before bed last night (back home now) and my blood was 6.1 at 7.30 this morning - it would normally be double figures. I just completed my dafne course last month and heard that the liver cannot do two things at once, ie deal with the alcohol and release sugars.

Has anyone else noticed this?

What Background Insulin are you on....??

If its Lantus then you wont be able to see a pattern til 3 days later and although Lantus has known to be split, Levemir or Humulin I or similar insulins can be.......

If you are on Lantus I would speak to your team about it in more detail......

I also felt like that on my course, I was on lots of insulin, but i was also one of the biggest there too...

Its all about the background to begin with, split the dose and start with your overnight reading, if you hold steady overnight, with no food or QA inside you, then yout night time dose is right, if not adjust accordingly........then you should know how to go from there.........

Are you getting any post course advice or help from your DAFNE educators?

Don't worry about it. My DAFNE week was also a disaster from the blood sugar point of view, for some reason. I had blazingly high sugars all week which I couldn't explain. So the week itself I learned nothing in practice about my own control at all. After much work, an a fair amount of experimentation, its cleared up since then. Just stick at it, and I'm sure you will find a regime and a solution.

Hi Mark2, Iv been on Dafne just cannot enter it on the login for some reason. Started to split long acting insulin from last nite. Will see how it goes today, although got up with a BG of 16.9 this morning.
I think myself I may be insulin resistant, on the Dafne course I was on the highest ration and the highest amount of insulin!! feel like a dafne failure rather than dafne graduate lol!!

Topic: General Discussion / At the football

Hi - another idea for you to choose from...

I've only gone to football with my husband but if you go with a friend you could brief them so you could do what I do, which is simply turn slightly toward my husband as I'm talking to him or peering at the programme and do the injection in the side of my stomach nearest him. That way most views are blocked and no-one will even notice.

If you clock somone has spotted you make eye contact, smile and continue as if there's nothing unusual happening. If they do say anything, just graciously tell them what you're doing and why - most people don't say anything.

Good luck and enjoy the games.
