Topic: General Discussion / Drinking

I agree with mark2, it does depend on the wine, but most normal wines, red and white, dont have any significant effect on your blood, apart from later when the livers glucose releasing function is impaired........

You may want to consider the food you had for dinner, assuming it was in the evening....

If it was a high carb meal your sugars may have spiked...........also the length of time from drinking to actually going to bed would be relevant...........

Again, as mark2 says, the effects on people are different, so its really a trial and error excercise when drinking.............

Topic: Questions for HCPs / dawn phenomenon... how to stop the rise?

Hi there stacy.....welcome to the forum......

I too suffer from dawn phenomonon and always wake up with double figures apart from once in a blue moon when I am on target with no apparent reason......

As you may have been told already 'dawn' is simply just a natural hormonal response which triggers the releas of glucose from our livers in the morning to assist in getting us up and ready.

All I have simply done is experimented with different background insulins, as well as time of dose to try and get the numbers down......

Sometimes a dose of Quick Acting insulin to cover a pre bed snack together with your background can help as its dual action, I find that if its toast or something similar then I will wake higher than normal as its released too slowly for the quick acting to catch, so something released fairly quickly or with a low GI is good.......thats just me though..

I am now on Humilin I as my background as it has a peak in it, unlike Lantus and Levemir...

I couldnt confidently say it has had an effect but it seems to keep me down to about 11 and 12 in the mornings.......

Its really all about experimenting with your doses and trying to trick your body in some ways to minimise the glucose dump......I have had no real success.......

I can assume your backgound is correct at this point?

For me its not having an effect on my HbA1c at the moment, and as long as it keeps getting better I can live with it.....

But as you say rising with high readings does make you feel rubbish and tired........

My conclusions are to initially try upping your BI dose if you havnt already and consider consulting with your team about different insulins to take advantage of the different onset, peaks and durations, as well as having a snack before bed so you have some quick acting working as well.........

In the end you may never come down, and if it is effecting your daily activity and pushing your HbA1c up then the only thing left to try is a pump..........they have been proven quite effevtive in tackling 'dawn' due to the ability to increase the dose of BI automatically whilst you sleep.........

Sorry for going on for so long..........

Keep us all posted

all the replys are good ones just do it where you are, but sometimes i like to go and do it just some where else and the mens toliets are not a good place as they are dirty.

so i have a radar key cost no more than £4.00 and you can get them form ost disability shops or mobility shops as than you can go into the disable toliets as they are much cleaner than the main toliets.

Topic: General Discussion / What do you carry your diabetes stuff in?

I keep the pen, with several needles in the case it comes with, my BG machine in its own case and general carry it all in a rucksack or type of briefcase (for work).
The only other things I carry is the DAFNE Carb book, Jelly babies and glucose tabs all in what bag i'm using.

The wife's bag if I'm in the good books. Otherwise, as already mentioned, I use an old pencil case.

I understand these are designed to deliver your doses into fatty tissue as opposed to muscle tissue which lies deeper. Up until recently I used 10mm. Yes 10. I'm now on 8 which seem really short so will have to discuss going shorter still with my GP at next consultation.

Hello.

I've also been led to believe the same Claire. Although in my case it's not wine but bitter. Less of the little finger and more of the big belly. Haha!

Topic: Questions for HCPs / dawn phenomenon... how to stop the rise?

I have recently finished the DAFNE course (which of course was very helpful) but I have been struggling for a few weeks with having extremely high blood glucose levels when I wake up. Literally every day they are above 20 when I wake. For instance; yesterday, I went to bed with a level of 6.5 after having a hypo an hour earlier and treating it exactly as told. I woke myself at 2am and my sugars were 6.4... but this morning, when I woke, it was 24.3 !? I am pretty sure I am suffering from dawn phenomenon as it was mentioned by the trainers when we were discussing my glucose levels in morning sessions, but I wasnt told if/how it can be stopped? obviously waking up with blood glucose levels of +20mmol is causing problems- i feel rubbish!
Any advice on how to / if i can prevent it other then correcting with my breakfast pleeeease reply!

thankyou!

stacy x

Hi Maura,

I was told not to test my bg after a few glasses of wine because initially it'll go sky high... but by the morning you may of gone hypo ... maybe best if poss to do a 3am test and then first thing in the morning. A lot of people test their bg after a few hours of drinking and then take QA to correct only to find they are dangerously low by the morning. I wouldnt correct with insulin until the morning.
Hope this helps

Thanks everybody for the encouraging replies and I will just carry on and inject where and when I need to.

It probably is just me because I do exactly that whenever I'm out and about doing whatever, I just had it in my mind that the footie would be a different thing. But it's not Smile

As they say that wine reduces your BG do you think perhaps you could have gone lower than you thought whilst drinking and dipped slightly into a hypo and your body sorted itself out hence the higher reading?

Depends on the wine. Sweet wines do put the sugar up slightly in themselves, but dry wine not so much.

The effect of the Alcohol itself varies with different people, apparently. For me if I have a lot to drink (I mean 12 units or so) I do get a rise, but its about 4 or 5 hours later I guess when I am processing all the alcohol.

On Mark2's comment - couldn't agree more. The carbs list is available for free on the site, and at the end of the DAFNE course in paper form, we're just trying to make it as accessible as possible for everyone. Hopefully we can resolve this and make it free to all, we'll keep you posted.

Topic: Site Development / DAFNE Online iPhone application - help with content/design needed

Hi all, you can now get the DAFNE Online iPhone app from the App store. Search for 'DAFNE' on the store or click this link.

As always, let us know via the forums or contact us section if there is anything you would like adding to the app, or if you find any bugs in it.

Hi all can anyone advise according to Dafne rules wine does not contain any carbs and if anything you need to eat when drinking because BG drops when drinking. However I find if im drinking wine my sugars go through the roof! as in last nite pre drinking my BG was 8.3 slightly over target. I had a few glasses of wine no carbs pre bed my sugar was 24.4. I would be grateful for your views Cheers

Yes keep up the good work. I guess eventually there probably will be a free carb list with an Iphone or Ipad Application that allows this all to take place in an automated way, without hassle. That will be good for everyone.

Its interesting though to understand the reasoning behind paid Health Care professionals, funded by the NHS, who think its a reasonable idea to try and charge for something like a carboydrate list isn't it? Sorry to be so abrupt about it, but the logic fails me, I'm afraid. I guess if the list needs to be continually maintained - and this entails a lot of work, I can see the logic perhaps.

I agree with the posts about just getting on with it. I was at a match on Saturday and just did it in my seat during the game. There's nothing more annoying than being high and not being able to concentrate on the football, especially when i paid £35 to get in!

Plus if you do it during the match no-one is really going to be watching you anyway Smile

Been a season ticket holder for all my diabetic life (7 years). Always just injected in my seat. Never had trouble getting into ground. Just do it man!

However I find football days difficult to control, so often do more tests during these days due to alcohol, bad fast food, eccitement / stress at the footy. .......Im a newcastle fan. Liz B's advice above is spot on and definaltey the ethos to have.

Dear Simon.

Keep up the good work buddy.
Some excellent ides and bringing the DAFNE carb info and diary into the 21st century is since long needed and lifestyle changing for many of us. In terms of paying for app. It would be nice to carry on with the ethos of all being free and I would advocate that, however the app with its freedom, functionality, and end to guessing carbs when eating out is also well worth a couple of quid to me.

Topic: General Discussion / The Hospital - Channel 4

Yep I just gave this a watch on 4OD, after seeing this topic and also being in the 15-25 age bracket (for another few months at least...) I was interested.

I wasn't surprised by the overall theme of the show - I think it was to give young people with diabetes (and their parents) a kick up the backside to better manage their diabetes. That said they could have explained better the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 - I think someone who wasn't diabetic might walk away from the show thinking that there was only one type of diabetes and you only get it if you're overweight.

It also showed all 'young' diabetics as being unruly and unwilling to manage their condition, I bet for every person they showed there are at least 10 who are well controlled, but showing this wouldn't make for good TV.

It may be that a structured eduction course for teens might help this situation. I found with DAFNE that one of the most rewarding parts was sharing experiences and advice with other people with the condition, and I think it has helped me stay on track. Being able to talk to other young people who are dealing with it may inspire/help those who aren't well controlled to think about their diabetes more.

Topic: General Discussion / No rolls or pasta give good results.....

Instead of the rolls I replaced them with a salad, a lovely home made one at that......I still had some dairylea jumbo tubes...2units....a chocolate biscuit....1 unit.....mini pack of mcvites chocolate hobnobs...2 units....and 2 small apples....2 units......

So saying no carbs was really a lie but ommited the most starchy part eliminated the large spike three hours later.......

So far its been working well.....with a high of 10 most days at 3:00 instead of 18........

Its all about experimenting folks.......

Topic: General Discussion / At the football

When I went on my first holiday after being diagnosed, I was dragged out of the ladies toilets in Gatwick airport by a very mortified lady who screamed that "all you sick and sad people ought to think twice before inflicting such dirty drug use on yourself in front of others". I burst into tears and ran into the arms of my husband mortified that someone could speak to me like that. After having to justify myself to the security guards and every other person that I was diabetic and thought that would be the best place the lady in question walked away very red faced. I later found her chain smoking (as you could then smoke in the airport) for the whole of our delay until my husband pointed out to her that at least I wasn't trying to kill everyone else in the process. I have never since that day hidden away anywhere or from anyone. But I am sure football grounds have many thousands of people in the stadium all having to inject.

Well done for a nearly "green" day. Can I just ask what you ate for lunch if you said you were carb free as you took insulin at this meal?
