Topic: General Discussion / Drinking Hi all can anyone advise according to Dafne rules wine does not contain any carbs and if anything you need to eat when drinking because BG drops when drinking. However I find if im drinking wine my sugars go through the roof! as in last nite pre drinking my BG was 8.3 slightly over target. I had a few glasses of wine no carbs pre bed my sugar was 24.4. I would be grateful for your views Cheers |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Iphone Apps Yes keep up the good work. I guess eventually there probably will be a free carb list with an Iphone or Ipad Application that allows this all to take place in an automated way, without hassle. That will be good for everyone. Its interesting though to understand the reasoning behind paid Health Care professionals, funded by the NHS, who think its a reasonable idea to try and charge for something like a carboydrate list isn't it? Sorry to be so abrupt about it, but the logic fails me, I'm afraid. I guess if the list needs to be continually maintained - and this entails a lot of work, I can see the logic perhaps. |

Topic: General Discussion / At the football I agree with the posts about just getting on with it. I was at a match on Saturday and just did it in my seat during the game. There's nothing more annoying than being high and not being able to concentrate on the football, especially when i paid £35 to get in!Plus if you do it during the match no-one is really going to be watching you anyway ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / At the football Been a season ticket holder for all my diabetic life (7 years). Always just injected in my seat. Never had trouble getting into ground. Just do it man! However I find football days difficult to control, so often do more tests during these days due to alcohol, bad fast food, eccitement / stress at the footy. .......Im a newcastle fan. Liz B's advice above is spot on and definaltey the ethos to have. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Iphone Apps Dear Simon.Keep up the good work buddy. Some excellent ides and bringing the DAFNE carb info and diary into the 21st century is since long needed and lifestyle changing for many of us. In terms of paying for app. It would be nice to carry on with the ethos of all being free and I would advocate that, however the app with its freedom, functionality, and end to guessing carbs when eating out is also well worth a couple of quid to me. |

Topic: General Discussion / The Hospital - Channel 4 Yep I just gave this a watch on 4OD, after seeing this topic and also being in the 15-25 age bracket (for another few months at least...) I was interested.I wasn't surprised by the overall theme of the show - I think it was to give young people with diabetes (and their parents) a kick up the backside to better manage their diabetes. That said they could have explained better the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 - I think someone who wasn't diabetic might walk away from the show thinking that there was only one type of diabetes and you only get it if you're overweight. It also showed all 'young' diabetics as being unruly and unwilling to manage their condition, I bet for every person they showed there are at least 10 who are well controlled, but showing this wouldn't make for good TV. It may be that a structured eduction course for teens might help this situation. I found with DAFNE that one of the most rewarding parts was sharing experiences and advice with other people with the condition, and I think it has helped me stay on track. Being able to talk to other young people who are dealing with it may inspire/help those who aren't well controlled to think about their diabetes more. |

Topic: General Discussion / No rolls or pasta give good results..... Instead of the rolls I replaced them with a salad, a lovely home made one at that......I still had some dairylea jumbo tubes...2units....a chocolate biscuit....1 unit.....mini pack of mcvites chocolate hobnobs...2 units....and 2 small apples....2 units......So saying no carbs was really a lie but ommited the most starchy part eliminated the large spike three hours later....... So far its been working well.....with a high of 10 most days at 3:00 instead of 18........ Its all about experimenting folks....... |

Topic: General Discussion / At the football When I went on my first holiday after being diagnosed, I was dragged out of the ladies toilets in Gatwick airport by a very mortified lady who screamed that "all you sick and sad people ought to think twice before inflicting such dirty drug use on yourself in front of others". I burst into tears and ran into the arms of my husband mortified that someone could speak to me like that. After having to justify myself to the security guards and every other person that I was diabetic and thought that would be the best place the lady in question walked away very red faced. I later found her chain smoking (as you could then smoke in the airport) for the whole of our delay until my husband pointed out to her that at least I wasn't trying to kill everyone else in the process. I have never since that day hidden away anywhere or from anyone. But I am sure football grounds have many thousands of people in the stadium all having to inject. |

Topic: General Discussion / No rolls or pasta give good results..... Well done for a nearly "green" day. Can I just ask what you ate for lunch if you said you were carb free as you took insulin at this meal? |

Topic: General Discussion / Hypo I think I would personally have treated the hypo with some quick acting stuff just to bring me up as you don't know how quick your food will take to work and I would have injected myself during the meal. But everyone seems to cope/manage in different ways. |

hi im a type 1 and have been for 24 yrs, i did feel quite negatitve after watching it, i thought it was educational for those who dont have good control, hopefully to push them in the right direction. i completely agree with type 1 and type 2, they need to make it clear that type 1's are not associated with being obese!!! |

Topic: General Discussion / Blood Glucose Diary Its given to type 2 diabetics who are so because there pancreas doesnt produce enough insulin, or there cells are resitant to the insulin...............A guy in my dafne course was on them as he was resitant, metformin also inhibits the release and or production of gluagen from the liver and slows the absorbtion of glucose into the blood. He was quite big you see, the more active your muscles are the more 'doors' if you like are created for the unsulin to unlock, making you less resistant........ Keep me posted..........if you want to keep in touch by email or anything we can swap addreses though PM...... |

Topic: General Discussion / Blood Glucose Diary Your corrections seem a bit out....For example at 10 am you were 9.6 and had 3 correctional units, which should bring you down, according to DAFNE, 6-9mmol/l.......when above 12mmol/l you usually need more Its much the same story with rest, but the interesting thing is that even though you are over correcting your readings are still high?? This must suggest either your BI or you need more QA.... You can see that your nightime correction was given, which is right in my eyes for 16.8, which should of brought you down on target....it didnt, you stayed roughly the same....... I would try and avoid carbs before bed, for testing purposes and try that dose again, I expect it will not hold you steady, bump it up a unit or two and try again....... Unfortunately you might not be able to get single figured readings if your experiencing the dawn phenomonon, but you should still find a dose that gets u the lowest you can go without hypo at night........ Once you have found a dose that your happy with you start on the QA, it would be good if you didnt have to go above 3:1 but you might need to....... Another option is medication like metformin which helps with insulin resistance..... I have rabbled on a bit, I just have so many ideas and really want to help you.. |

Topic: General Discussion / The Hospital - Channel 4 I watched it and it has been discussed extensively on the Diabetes UK support forum with some positive and negative opinions...As a diabetic who is knowledgabe, thanks to DAFNE, I wasnt effected by it in any way...as I know what to do now... I think that it did show a very real situation that is happening around the country, and that more of these people need the basic eductaion to have good control.... What it didnt do is distinguish between type 1 and type 2, alot of non diabetics may have got the message that we are all over wieght and dont bother to take care of ourselves, resulting in a huge burden for the NHS...... Overall it could of been more effective, and sympathetic to the diabetic population, but that isnt why they made the show, its all about money, the NHS, and how we should all be trying our best to keep costs down....... As far as the complications go, there was no suprises, as DAFNE illustrated, maybe apart from the pregnancy, but I wont have to deal with that.................. I personally think making the effort to control my condition is without any difficultie.........getting good control on the other hand is another story.... |

Topic: General Discussion / Blood Glucose Diary not neccasirly, the best way to start off is to split it down the middle, then move on from there.......thats how I done it......Now I am on more in the evening (26), than I am in the morning (17), this keeps me in the 11-12 mark when I wake, dawn phenomonon... What was your result before bed and in the morning with that dose...?? |

Topic: General Discussion / The Hospital - Channel 4 Hi All,The most recent episode of The Hospital was shown on Channel 4 this week and is also available to watch on 4 on demand. It centres around diabetes in young people and the health professionals that treat them. I was just wondering if anyone else saw it and what they thought of it? I'm in the 15 - 25 year old age bracket they were discussing, I've only been diabetic for a couple of years, I've got fairly good control, (especially after Dafne) and I've had no complications so far. But I just felt as I watched it that it was really negative. I don't deny that complications can happen in young people, and obviously we do have a responsibility to keep ourselves healthy to the best of our ability, but I came away from watching it feeling completely depressed, and I just really wanted to know if anyone else picked up on this too? For the moment I haven't shown it to my family and friends, I think it would terrify them even more than me! (It has some very brief surgical scenes). I would really appreciate someone else's perspective on this. Thanks, Laura. |
