Topic: General Discussion / Exhaustion Thanks Marke. I just thought that diabetes makes you tired as I have always been very tired with it and I assumed that all the mucking around with regimes was making me feel worse for the moment. i am sure it will improve and was just looking for tips for what other people had tried. However, hte hospital has already given me an appointment and I think they thought that becaseu my BI was nearly sorted that that would be me now better. I should e-mail again and see if i can go back to them. Thanks for your view MArke and to all the o thers too. Makes me feel less isolated. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Simple Form to assist Meal CP Calculation Hello Paul.. had a chance now to look at your spreadsheet and think I am (just about!) clear on the operation. It does a great job and, as a side benefit, the personal setup causes a close look at ones’s current regime assumptions! It is the next stage of the basic spreadsheet I set up to calculate (Regular) Meal CPs but with no attempt to assess Insulin rqmts. Your calc is more sophisticated technically and looks good too! You did ask for comments(!), so here are mine, from the setup phase: For additional user clarity: Put ‘Name Range’ at top of Range names (b1) Replace ‘Ideal’ with ‘Mid-range’ (e1) Replace ‘Meal’ with ‘Meal Range Name’ (a15) Append ‘before Meal’ after BG Reading (a16) Append ‘Units required’ after ‘Adjustment’ (a17) Also we tended to use ‘Correction’ rather than ‘Adjust, ment’ Replace ‘Meal’ with ‘Meal Name’ (g7) Replace ‘CP Count’ with ‘Meal CP calculated from list below’ (g15) Append ‘(if required)’ to ‘Manual Adjustment’ (g16) Append ‘Required’ to Insulin Injection’ (g17) On the system side I would suggest: Could the predefined-choice entries be made scrollable as per Dafne Online? The Food names be structured (basicitem) (subtype) Brand eg ‘Chicken peri peri birdseye’ I realize this is a user thing but changing would start everybody off in the right direction and also makes identification more rapid and comparisons can be made more easily. I found only about 50% items in my list had a weight unit of measure so would be good if you could enable system to also work from entry of quantity of other UOMs such as as you have already included in your list. (or have I missed something?). The list ideally needs to be easily A5 printable for pre meal reference. . I have this, manually maintained, and use it every day as portion sizes are pretty standard. It would also be good if you could add a feature which, when a meal CP has been calculated, would enable that meal or course, named by the user to be added to a Meal/course List maintained on a second worksheet page. This list again to be printable on A5 for pre meal reference. That’s about it I think .. hope all is clear . I can send you my CP list if you wish but it is very simple but seems to have topped out at around 130 items. Keep up the good work! Cheers, John |

Topic: General Discussion / Initial thoughts........... This is the ret of the results showing my dawn phenomonon..........I think I might try and up my lunchtime ratio to 1.5:1. If this does send me low at dinner then I might need to consider splitting the dose. I will consult with my nurses about how much and when........ Any more comments are very welcome..... |

I have never heard of splitting either. I also thought you don't do a correction after a hypo - but this would have made your readings worse :-( |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetes............. Hi, I have been diabetic for 19 years. I was diagnosed when I was 19 right in the middle of that growing up stage. I went through my down times but I came out of it the other side stayed with my partner who was great never saw it for anything other than a good diet and jab a few times a day. We got married and I went to all my doctors appointments to find out about the chances of getting pregnant etc and without knowing I had already conceived. I stuck to my diet as closely as possible and at 35 weeks gave birth to a lovely baby girl. For four years I controlled my diabetes ready to have another baby but nothing happened, I gave up basically and what happened number 2 came along and a healthy baby girl again. A year after her birth and after caring for my mum who had been diagnosed with cancer and I was drinking nightly became pregnant again and this time a healthy baby boy! Although in the ideal world by HBA1C could have been better but with good ish control and help and support it all worked out well and they are now 13, 9, 7 and no diabetes yet!!! |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetes............. Everyone has a fair point and i wouldnt rule out anyones opinion. I only got diagnosed 4 years ago, but my brother has had type 1 for about 24 years ... so i did grow up with it... and yes i agree it doesnt have to 'rule' your life, but it does stop you from doing some of the things you want to do, just like other conditions/diseases/illnesses. My brother was desperate to be a stunt man.. wasnt allowed... then join the royal marines...wasnt allowed... be a scuba diving instructor ... wasnt allowed (but he fought for this through PADI for a year and became one). Children with diabetes do have to adapt to it, they cant always do the same things as other children. Just like as adults we have to adapt to it and i suppose it is how you deal with it that is important. Although it is not 'stopping' me from getting pregnant, i would never risk conceiving until my Hba1c is what it should be, therefore having diabetes and waiting to be able to conceive is a HUGE inconvenience. Diabetes doesnt have to be as negative as i generally think it is, but at the moment when all i want in the world is baby, it doesnt feel easy or convenient!Hopefully, now ive done dafne and found this site i can get advice and opinions from other diabetics, not just health professionals. |

Topic: General Discussion / Initial thoughts........... I do start to know that I am over about 12 these days but unfortunately getting use to the feeling as not managing to stay in target either hypo or high most days. I hardly eat anything a bowl of cereal for breakfast usually the same for lunch and I might not have any tea and just a slice of bread before bed.We were told that over about 12u insulin doesn't work so well so to split the does over about a 30 minute time period or basically some before you eat and some when you finish. I just don't know where to go now with it all! |

Never heard that rule of splitting above 12 units....... |

I was of the understanding after doing Dafne that you should spit your insulin dose at that sort of level i.e. over about 12. I have found that when I eat croissants, I have to have my insulin about 10/15 after eating them as my sugars peak too long after I have eaten and my insulin peaks first. What did you have for lunch to make that high? Why are you testing after meals, are you just curious or are you feeling unwell? |

Topic: General Discussion / Initial thoughts........... I don't think splitting your lunchtime injection would help in this case, as you would be getting less insulin up front, and so you'd be even higher at the 2- and 3-hour tests. It seems as though what you actually need is *more* insulin up front, but if you're normally back in range by dinner, then that's probably going to send you hypo.Is this a trend? Do you normally spike this high after your lunch and then come back down? |

Topic: General Discussion / Initial thoughts........... If you can see my results, what do you think I should do with my lunchtime injection?I will probably be on target for dinner but its the in between times that I cant get my head round. Should I split my injection at lunch to take advantage of the overlapping peaks? |

Topic: Site Development / DAFNE Online iPhone application - help with content/design needed HiI think option 1 is best, it would be really good to try out the app even before the carb list is on it. I have opened the PDF version of the carb list in my free ibook app so its really easy to get access to it using my iphone as it is now automatically stored in there. Looking forward to the app release! |

Topic: General Discussion / Loss of Hypo warning signs judiththe advice given is to raise your bg levels to that above the norm then after a few weeks start bringing them back down to the lower readings of DAFNE targets, it should bring back your warning signs. I tried and it didnt work for me i can go to 1.9 and still not feel anything and generally start fitting then!! Good luck and keep us posted |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetes............. I think that life is full of inconveniences: some mornings I find it inconvenient to have to get up; sometimes I find it inconvenient to go shopping or mowing the lawn or putting petrol in the car or shaving. Likewise, I sometimes find it inconvenient to test my BG before a meal or before I drive; to remember to take some glucose tablets with me before I go out; to have to calculate the CPs in a meal; to try not to be conspicuous when I inject at the table in a restaurant. As I said, life is full of inconveniences - be they medical or non-medical, but we deal with them.Alan |

Topic: Site Development / DAFNE Online iPhone application - help with content/design needed Hi all - I've copied this from another topic on the Carb Counting forum, but thought it was relevant to this one too...Well the DAFNE Online iPhone app is ready - however we've hit a small problem. The DAFNE Central team aren't keen on releasing the carb list in 'app' form without users paying for it. We're campaigning for it to be a free app, and whether we will be allowed to distribute the carbs list in an app for free will be decided at a DAFNE Executive meeting on 30th September. As we don't want to keep you waiting for another 2 months or more - I'd like to get your opinion on the best course of action. As it stands we could release the app, which allows you to enter and view your DAFNE Diary entries, as well as uploading these entries to your DAFNE Online account so that you can view them in graphical form and share with other users. You can also specify your own targets within the app, and BG results are colour coded according to those targets. Although the carbs list is implemented, we would have to lock it out and simply provide a link to the online carbs list we have here, until the DAFNE Executive make their decision. Option two - we can wait until after september 30th for a decision from the DAFNE Executive as to whether the carbs list can be in a free version of the app. If the answer is no, we will create two versions of the app - one a paid for version containing the carbs list on your iPhone, the other without the carbs list, but for free. Apologies for the complication - it is out of our hands at the moment, however your opinions on the above options would be gratefully received. Answers on a postcard please (or just reply to this topic ;) ) |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Iphone Apps Hi Simon,It would be really useful if we could have an app sooner rather than later, with or without the carb list. If, come Septmeber, you can include the carb list in the free app that would be terrific, but if not at least the free app will already be up and running. Greatly appreciate all your hard work in this, I can't wait to have an app on my iPhone to record my DAFNE diary :-D Laura. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Iphone Apps Could you release now and if they allow you later, do it as an update - if they don't you could submit it as a different version - a lite version (free) full version (pay) |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetes............. I don't get to deep with it. I dont put it in a category. I dont see is as anything more than my life and thats it. I don't like to be labelled. After 15 years I can honestly say when soemone asks me what it is like to be diabetic I can't really answer it. To me its like asking someone what its like to have size 8 feet or brown hair. |

Hope to hear from you soon.... |
