Topic: General Discussion / Blood Glucose Diary

Hi Maura,

Here's my take on your figures.

Your 3:1 ratio during the day seems to be keeping you pretty level (even if it's high it's still not going up or down too much), but you seem to creep up after supper.

You might want to think about increasing your evening meal ratio. Or perhaps your background insulin isn't quite lasting 24 hours and is running out which is causing the increase before bed. If thats the case then a couple of extra units of BI or split dosing might be better.

Just my opinion.

Maura - I agree with Novorapiboi - your readings are high enough that it does look like might need more Background insulin. I also agree that it might be better to split your doses, you are getting your highest readings at night.

For example you had a much better readings on Tuesday 17 than you did on Thursday 12. The variations that you see could be caused by many things. Stress, damaged injection sites - or just high blood sugars putting your body under stress. Are you making sure that you are always injecting your BI correctly in different places, and not into muscle? Illness also causes them to be higher - are you ill in some other way at the moment?

I would just do what ever it is you usually do. I personally would just take it where I was sitting or standing. Everybody is different about taking an injection.

If I was eating a pie off the floor of a honkin toilet I would probably be more worried about catching something but am sure it would be safe to take your pen out and jag up for the 30 secs it takes without catching anything in even the most fly infested bog.

I think you are over analizing it a bit. Like Judith said "just do it" if anyone gives you a funny look just smile.

Stress can definelty contribute to higher blood sugars...........

There are some discrepencies in your rsults though that I will mention......

You seem to be on a 3:1 ratio everytime you eat, this infact might be right but my first thoughts are that your background insulin needs to be evaluated, this background dose is quite high as well.............I think that splitting your background would be a good option to give you even coverage throughout the day.......with an insulin like Levemir and Humilin I.

Another thing I noticed is that you ALMOST never seem to correct at meal times, only inbetween your meals.

You seem to be correcting your reading in the morning then again 2 hours later, normally that could cause hypo......

With exception to your morning reading, you shouldnt need to test inbetween each meal sitting, unless you feel unwell or are investigating something, which is obvious you are, being quite high.

I really think the first thing to check is your BI, I suspect its not lasting much longer than half the day.......

If you can get this split down the middle, a morning and evening dose then I think you will start to see good results......

Have you done a DAFNE course, it doesnt say next to your name......

THIS THREAD SHOULD BE MOVED MODS!!

Hi just wondering is anyone having problems with blood sugar levels. Mine are out of target most of the time even though I would eat pretty much the same food Mon-Fri. Does anyone find that stress increases their blood sugars?

No you don't need to give up Muesli altogether - I have it often and its still possible to inject the right amount. Just need to be prepared for it to be slightly higher sugars for a little longer thats all

Hi,
I broke my toe the other day and a friend recommended arnica to help with the swelling and bruising. I looked it up on the net to see if there were any side effects and came across a few sites that suggested it may help with controlling sugar levels. I’ve also heard the same of aloe vera juice.
Has anyone tried these and, if so, have you noticed any benefit?
Thanks

Topic: General Discussion / At the football

Hello,

Not been to football for a while, but I carry my pen needles wherever I go, and never had any trouble getting into football grounds (home & away), nightclubs, concerts, etc or anywhere else that security might check you.

If any security ask I always declare up front that I'm carrying my insulin needles and have never had any problems.

As for the football, I personally wouldn't think twice about injecting in my seat but I appreciate others may want to find somewhere quieter to do it (although agree mens toilets at football grounds would be WAY down the list of most hygenic places)

Topic: Site Development / New Meter Upload Development

Hello,

I've had very little time to look at this lately, but want to make an effort to get back to it and thought I'd make a new thread to try and keep things more concise.

Can anyone who has a OneTouch UltraEASY or UltraSMART meter who is interested in using this please reply to this topic, and specify which meter you have.

You will need:

OneTouch UltraEASY or UltraSMART meter
Windows based PC (sorry no MAC or linux)
Data transfer cable (available for free from Lifescan)
USB cable driver (available for free download from Lifescan)

I had it very close before, but it could do with some re-working and having a group of people actively testing things for me would help give the extra push to get it all finished.

I'd also appreciate any input anyone has on the way they would like this to work. Do you want to see the readings before they are uploaded, or do you just want to connect the meter press one button and it does it all, etc?

Thanks,

NiVZ

Hi,

Now the football season is underway I've bought a season ticket and will be going to at least all home games. In the past I haven't bothered with any of the refreshments on sale, only a diet soft drink but I can't help getting hungry every time I smell those pies, sausage rolls and hot dogs each week.

My question is what are the do's and don'ts regarding carrying a syringe, all be it a pen, and doing injections etc?

The toilets are definitely only good for washing your hands in, not for administering insulin. It's also a good family atmosphere and don't want to draw unwanted attention from other supporters or have a steward freak out.

I'm going to contact the club and ask how they would accommodate this but feel like I would be making a fuss, that's just the kind of person I am. What do you other diabetic footie fans do when they go cheer their team on a Saturday afternoon? Do you have major hassles when going to other grounds for away games for instance.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / muesli?

I epxerience spikes in my BG after lunch that I have been trying to combat but with not too much success........

Something similar might be going on here....

DAFNE say you dont need to test in between meals, thats ok if you have a small rise then back down to target........

I have heard some people say if the CHO portion is quite high 12CP+ then you can considering splitting the QA dose to deal with the delayed glucose release.......

I have tried this with varying results, so no joy as yet......

If you cant go without your meusli in the mornings this might be an option to try......

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / muesli?

I've also found muesli quite difficult to assess. Rolled oats are lower in GI (Glycemic Index) than many other breakfast cereals. Which means that the body breaks the sugar down more slowly, so your sugar will be higher for a little longer.

Muesli - is very high in carbs. Make sure that you are not falling into the "not realising where it says- per 100g" trap. Also remember to count the 0.5 CP or so milk that you put on it.

Also I think, sometimes manufacturers get the carbs wrong. In the case of muesli, the carbohydrate comes from the rolled outs and corn that may be in it. There may also be added sugar in dried fruit. But the quantities of these items and how they contribute to overall weight, may vary from when they made their assessment of carb values.
