Topic: Questions for HCPs / Dafne Diary entries for advice please

Hi
I have my annual review appointment on Thursday 1st September. I have just re-found the DAFNE online (forgotten to try it out-sorry) however I have attached my last few days diary for you to review. I have been on holiday from 21st to 28th August so it has been a bit out of sorts and I had a few low BS readings so reduced my BI to prevent it going low overnight.
Using this format I can clearly some of my errors - forgetting to inject for those snacks is a big one and obviously has a bad effect on my BS before meals.
Any advice appreciated - many thanks.

I would personally get some more overnight readings, at first glance it seems as though you are dropping overnight with your current BI dose........so I would investigate that.........

you seem to be high most of the time, so logically you should be starting at your breakfast ratio, and then working from there on wards.......

Might also be worth doing some BI testing during the day with some carb free meals/miss a meal............

your heading in the right direction though..........

When did you graduate...........?

The nurses at monklands are usually quite good at advising via email if you think you need help from the "professionals"

Topic: General Discussion / SUGGESTION

Hi All

I am new to DAFNE and need some help, can anybody suggest any adjustments I could make, I considered changing my dinner ratio as I am always high at bedtime would this be the correct thing to do. I think my BI is correct therefore the next adjustment would be the QA would it not?

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE Myths

On the 10th June the Annual DAFNE Collaborative was held. This is the DAFNE get-together of all educators, programme management etc. I was
fortunate enough to be there as a DAFNE User Action Group rep. One presentation that really caught my ear that I can now share with you was
about DAFNE Myths and Misconceptions. If you click here you can read the presentation in PDF form.
Remember it is being said that ALL the things in the presenation are myths. Have a read and post your views here ! Its bound to cause some controversy, which is why I'm posting it here to see what peoples views are.

Like Mark I was also lucky enough to be present at the Collaborative when Carolin Taylor gave this presentation. I'm not sure whether everyone is aware, but as part of the process to ensure that all DAFNE training meets the required standard, and that the graduates are taught the "right" thing (i.e. what's in the handbook) each DAFNE Centre is regularly audited by an experienced DAFNE Educator from elsewhere in the country. The purpose of this presentation was to educate the Educator's on some of the myths and misconceptions that are still, wrongly, being taught. Carolin herself is a highly experienced DAFNE Educator and leads the DAFNE Educator Group which is responsible for DAFNE training.

It would be great if every Centre could provide consistent training that completely matches the DAFNE Handbook, but that is never going to be possible, and so the audit process is in place to do as much as possible to ensure consistency of education for all graduates, but there is always a possibility that something incorrect slips through. I, was taught, and still treat hypos more than 2 hours before a meal with 2+2 CPs. It works for me, at least most of the time, and that is the key message in my view. We are all different. The training and the handbook give a good foundation, but it is then necessary to add personal experience on top of that. It takes time to get that knowledge, but it's worth a few mistakes along the way to discover what works for you.

Finally, DAFNE is an evolving course. The section of the presentation on insulin types is an example of this. The handbook and course have been updated a number of times, and so that things that were taught a few years ago (e.g. 4's the floor) are no longer used. In these cases the course and handbook are updated, but that leaves a gap for those who have already been trained and don't necessarily read the new handbook cover to cover. There is probably a role for DUAG and dafneonline to get these updates to all existing graduates, and that is something that we will look into.

Topic: General Discussion / EU Directive - Million Drivers face losing their licence.

Hi novorapidboi26,

At that time I was pre dafne, and be tottaly honest had been running high bgs for years, so had totally forgot about hypo awareness and the shock a hypo causes to us and others. I new in my heart that I did not need hospital treatment, but with the confusion that low bgs can cause, and my partner scared it was quite difficult to convince all that I would be ok. Dafne has given me the power and tools to be more in control now though.

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Protein and Fats

I would probably treat the hypo with a sugary drink or Lucozade.........

These will be absorbed the quickest and probably wont be effected by the more slowly absorbed items..........

I think the most significant thing that does this is high fat foods, as opposed to high protein, and people often find they get a BG spike later on after eating..........this can be tackled with a split dose of QA, most of the time fairly successfully, but you would need to experiment.....

You say you often struggle with lows................?Could you give an example of the meal you are eating when this happens.......

Hi Keith,

I've tried to upgrade my installation using the URL you provided in the original (revised URL) email and this is still the 1.0.r251 BETA version. How can I obtain the 1.2.r261 BETA version?

Regards, John

John,

I've just done the download again on my phone and got the "1.2.r261 BETA". But when I download on my Mac using Chrome I have to first use "Clear Browsing Data..." because otherwise I get an old cached version. Perhaps you are hitting a similar problem on your phone?

Installing the new version on top of the old version should preserve all data and settings.

Note that I've asked for "1.3.r265 BETA" to be posted but that might not happen for 24 hours. This should fix your bug #1 by only averaging BG entries that are not null and not empty strings.

so basically got chucked out back of ambulance and had to walk home when still effectively in hypo.

Would you have wanted to go to hospital though? You treated yourself and your BG was coming up, all be it slowly.......

I have had some frightening hypos were the drop has been quick and big, but I still did not need help to treat myself for them, that's the key.........

I wouldn't have thought you needed to go to hospital as it wasn't what I would class as severe........ Smile

You can take antihistamine medication which contain low lactose. Because antihistamine used for treating hives. Cetirizine is an antihistamine medication prescribed to provide relief from allergic symptoms and works by blocking the effects of histamine that causes allergy symptoms.

Keith, is there a function to do a manual upload?

This already exists. If you go into Entries (from the main screen), then bring up the menu (I use the menu button on my phone) you have the option to download, upload and short links to other main screen icons.
Hope this helps.

Keith, is there a function to do a manual upload? Over the last few days, auto upload hadn't been working (though access to the Dafne online site also appears to have been down so perhaps the two are connected). It up dated last night automatically, so theres no real issue now, but it could be a useful feature for those who don't have great connectivity or who want/need to upload every now and then.

Also, there have been a couple of references recently to newer versions of the beta. Should I be upgrading'
