I count the CP value of sweetcorn on the cob, and inject QA according to the ratio for the rest of that meal

My BI is 16 (7 at breakfast, 9 at bed)

Topic: General Discussion / weightwatchers

I need help to lose weight too, but my problem I believe is activity levels as opposed to calories.........

But if your active then calorie counting may help you along...........

As far as I believe, carbohydrate, protein and fat all contain the calories that go in our bodies.

So, 1 gram of carbs has 4 calories, 1 gram of protein also has 4 calories, and 1 gram of fat has 9 calories, so although the packaging will give you the total that gives an idea of the amounts.

I couldn't comment on weight watchers, but definitely counting your intake and then reducing it to the level or below for someone your age, sex and height is worth a go.....

How much activity are you doing?

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Watch out - Corn on the cob!

Just resurfacing this one....
I haven't had corn on the cob for years, but decided to reawaken the 70/80's, when I spotted a basket full in my local F&V shop. I was unsure to count the CPs or not, but whilst it was bubbling away in the pan, I did a bit of surfing. I hadn't weighed the cob, so just judged it to be average-size, and decided on 2 CPs. I took my corresponding amount of insulin for the full meal, and must have judged it about right. Nothing else in the evening, and pre-bed I was 7.6BG.
And it was DELICIOUS!

Cannot say if only changing the BI is enough and you may need to change the ratio for several of the meals.
I use 1.5:1 in the morning but use 2:1 for lunch, dinner and snacks though I change the ratio depending on the food.
Snacks like Chocolate or a McDonalds lunch don't seem to need such a high ratio as they seem to burn up quickly.

If you try changing the ration only change one at a time, and consider changing the adjustment ratio as I found that 3mmol to one unit wasn't working, but only change by 0.5mmol at a time.

Bear with it and i'm sure the levels will come down.

Ian - can you let us know which operating system version you are using? If you don't know how, go to Settings > General > About then let us know what the Version box says.

Welcome Smile
Try to give your change up to 17 of BI a few days before potentially changing again. Most people seem to react slowly to Background Insulin changes.
As you have split your BI dose you may want to review time splits too. Looking at BI timings they vary between 8 and 15 or so hours. You may want to consider the impact that this has.
For me personally...I take BI with breakfast and dinner and find that it normally makes a 12:12 hours split. If I get up late one morning... I tend to find all meal times slide too and it stays at 12:12 hours. Sure when returning back to normal meal timings there is an error...but its usually small.
Stick at it. Your results are very encouraging.
Regards
Garry

Welcome to the Forum...........

Now that you have split your dose, for good reason I might add, you can now be much more flexible with your BI requirements.............

Firstly, I would say that the 50:50 split may not be what you need, as your requirements for overnight may be different to that of the day...........

So you need to test your evening dose of 16 overnight, so no food carbs after dinner is best, test before bed, dont correct even if high, then your usual test in the morning. Do this for a few days. Adjust your dose depending on whether it goes up or down overnight, or if it holds steady [within 1-2mmol] you know its right.........

Then you need to move on to testing your daytime BI, this would be best in my opinion between lunch and dinner and dinner and your evening dose, so carb free meals again, or none if you can.....

This would be my course of action as splitting your background dose is quite a big change in your regime, so going back to the start is needed to establish the right doses, and we all know that trying to work out QA doses/ratios when the BI is out is not an easy job, if possible at all.............

I hope I helped................ Wink

Topic: General Discussion / Reducing levels

I would appreciate any comments and advice as to what i can do to reduce my levels.

Whilst doing a DAFNE course at the end of July it was suggested i split by BI (humulin i) as my levels were always high before dinner. So instead of doing one large dose before bed i am now doing half in the morning and half before bed. This doesn't seem to have changed my levels as they are still high before dinner.

Any advice/help would be very much appreciate.

thank you Very Happy

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Pork, vegetables and gravy

I have came across this in other Diabetics I have spoke with, but only the ones on pumps.........

How many CPs were in your helping of gravy?

What was the effect on your BG ie. before and after?

You could be sensitive to carbohydrate, however I am sticking with my understanding of the science, and will say that you need to review your BI dose.

Vegetables actually may have some carbohydrate, but in very small, slowly released amounts, so any QA delivered would be too fast for it, the BI dose is the one that is set up to deal with these.

People on a pump are being given a constant supply of insulin, but its only one type, this being a quick acting insulin, so there is no slow working insulin to deal with vegetables and the like, so this is why some, I believe, have to consider delivering QA/Bolus for non carb items.....

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE Myths

'Once you have done it, you will never look back to the old ways, you just physically couldn't do it.......'

Having been on too many courses with work than I care to remember, I can truly say that DAFNE is the only course I've ever been on that I am still sticking to 8 weeks later. Not only that, but it becomes more interesting as time goes by as you have more results to look at and analyse!

I know a course about your health is more important than any old 'work' course, but it would be easy to slip back into bad habits - except as novorapidboi says- you just physically can't let yourself do it!

I don't profess to know everything I need about my diabetes management - it's an ongoing education, and I am still battling with my BGs, but let me tell you going on DAFNE is like having the 'sack pulled off your head'.

'Enlightenment' is not an overstatement!

Hey and welcome to the site, you should think about starting a new thread so you can get more responses.....

For me personally, and I can probably speak for the majority of folk, DAFNE has changed everything for the better, doesn't mean it inst a struggle, as the human body is ever changing....

For me just being able to finally understand blood sugars, how carbohydrate effects them and how the insulin we use effects blood sugars is all I needed to take control. There is so much more information provided than those three basics just mentioned. Most importantly for me, the effort to make it work doesn't seem a lot, when I know it is, that's the beauty of it, being able to understand in clear detail whats going on makes controlling the condition seem effortless, for the most part anyway.....

Once you have done it, you will never look back to the old ways, you just physically couldn't do it.......

Enjoy it when the time comes, and be prepared for unexpected hypos..................good luck....... Smile

Hey Lizzie,

My boyfriend supports me in these ways:
~ Whenever he's the one to prepare food, he's keen to let me know how many CPs are in what he has made.

~ Whenever I'm upset (caused by high or low) or unsure about what has happened with my BG levels, I let my boyfriend give his thoughts on it. I have made sure to introduce him to DAFNE the best I can and thankfully for the situation he loves working stuff out mathematically so sometimes he brings light to a dark puzzle.

~ My boyfriend is pescetarian which encourages a healthier eating lifestyle, on top of my own attempts at healthy eating (from being diabetic since the age of 5 it's always something I've aimed for). He has however never stopped me from eating meat.

~ Thankfully, neither of us drink or smoke.

~ It's yet to be tested but he has said that he's prepared to inject me if I am unable to do it myself.

To be honest, I am very thankful for my chap. Almost every boyfriend I had before was just not interested, or if they were, I didn't have something as valuable as DAFNE to help explain it to them so they can help me if needed. I'm so glad that I can explain it to him much better than I could before. It makes a world of difference. He's also great for bringing me back when I get flustered - for example, if I have a hypo, sometimes if I don't know why it happened, I try to work it out there and then. The boyfriend slows me down so I can recover first lol.

Have a look at your life and the stuff that affects your diabetes and see if there are ways that your partner is happy to share with you. He's probably fully well aware that you're keen to keep your independence considering how you've been so far, so a good chat about it may be in order.

Best of luck Lizzie. I'm sure something can be arranged - even if it's just someone to talk to when your diabetes gets you down (ah another one mine does for me too!)

Hi, sorry for being a bit mobile illiterate Embarassed but can I use any of these versions with my HTC Desire? Looked at the i phone but couldn't afford it, so having to make do, but would love to have a DAFNE app i could use on the go.

Hi Coreen,

There's no android version of the app yet, i've heard it being spoken of but no sign yet. The alternative is to get hold of an ipod touch (ie an iphone without the "phone"), it will work with the app store and you can use the DAFNE app in just the same way. Bit of a stop-gap solution I know but the best I could think of.

Hi Chris, thanks for that, will look out for that version, now that I know what I am looking for.
Thanks again
