Topic: General Discussion / Shortage of test strips I just normally pay a visit to my DSN at the hospital who has many a meter in stock.............I assume the test strips are being discontinued by the manufacturer as opposed to your doctor saying that his practice has to stop issuing them? As a type 1 diabetic, you should never have to buy a test meter, your GP should prescribe the one he has recommended, or as I say, your hospital clinic will have, or should have several different brands..... You shouldn't feel your test strip prescription amount is at risk either.........your GP should have been informed from your DAFNE educators that you will be requiring more strips than that of someone not using the DAFNE principals........ So in theory when you go for your meeting, you should be confident that you can show him/her ,why your testing when you do, and how those blood results are being used effectively......... I am just assuming you have a hospital clinic, but if you dont, I recommend taking your care to the nearest clinic as GPs dont really know much in comparison to an educated DAFNE graduate in my opinion.... ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Half marathon with a pump Lee,No experience but: The "Walsh" book (Pumping Insulin) has a section on this. Info from a table on page 254 says for intense exercise (120 mins) you need an extra 110g CHO, lower your bolus by 70% and lower your basal by 30%. This carb amount is per 100lbs of body weight. There is also a bold print stating these are only estimates and must be individually adjusted through testing. A further warning said that if you have not trained you may need substantially more carbs but once you are trained you may need substantially less. Suggest you get hold of the book. Mine came from England! Pumping Insulin by John Walsh and Ruth Roberts (4th edition) Everything you need for Success on a Smart Insulin Pump. Good luck. Helen |

If your GP is specifying a meter which you haven't got, I feel your GP should supply the meter. I would go to the GP and demand one. I'm not sure how things work now, with all the changes to the NHS, but it sounds as if your GP has made some sort of arrangement with Omni - 'You supply the meters and I'll prescribe the strips'. There could be meters at the surgery waiting to be claimed, after all the bulk of the profit from Blood Sugar meters is gained from the strips, not the meters. If this is so, your GP should have told you about it. |

Topic: General Discussion / Shortage of test strips i just had letter from the GP today saying that they will no longer support my make of blood strips, i need to get an Omni test 3 meter before my i need to re order my blood sticks. can they do this? and also does any one use this machine if so where to did get this from as have just had a really quick look on line with out finding where i can order one? i know i do test my blood a lot as i do sports ( 4 times a week ) and drive so do use around 4 boxes a month iam very worried that the GP will want to reduce this as the letter also states that they want me to go into see them about learning how to get the most benefit from testing my blood. iam really not happy![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Half marathon with a pump Hi,Has anyone had experience of running a half marathon with an insulin pump? I was told that I should only leave my pump off for an hour at most when exercising so I will need to wear it for the 2 hours I plan to be running for but i'm not sure what to do with my doses. I was thinking of a very small trickle of insulin so there is some in my system but not enough to drop me low I will do a couple of long distance practise runs with the pump to test but I wondered if anyone had experience or pointers to help out? Thanks Lee |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android app Hi all,We're in need of some beta testers for the Android app, which works on Android 2.1+ As testers you'd be required to feed back on the following things
Please also note that as it is a pre-release version, it may be buggy and have the occasional crash, so be prepared for this. The idea is that we would send you over the beta version, give you a week to play with it, and then ask for your feedback after the week has passed. If you feel you can help out, and would be willing to provide feedback, drop me an email at [email protected] Simon |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Daphne online will not load on my iphone Hi Ian,The app should be working with your version of the iPhone operating system - it should have generated some crash reports which I'd be grateful if you could share them with me. Here's how to get them: http://www.ondemandworld.com/how-to-find-crash-logs/ If you could send me all of the DAFNE Online***.crash ones to [email protected] I'll try and figure out the problem. Thanks, Simon |

Are there any DAFNE dieticians/nutritionists that can shed any light on this theory? If it's true it would presumably apply to other foods DAFNE suggests you don't need to use QA for like pulses and nuts (both of which I have to inject for)... |

Topic: General Discussion / weightwatchers Thats why for me my exercise needs to be at the same time, when I have insulin on board to deal with the extra glucose..............Do you find yourself ever going high after it? When do you exercise.....? |

Topic: General Discussion / weightwatchers if I have a BG of around 6-7 I would eat extra carbs and take a swig of lucozade, I tend to find by the time I finish (1hour later) I have dropped again. If I have a high BG of around 13 then I do my workout and find I drop an hour later.Sometimes I can go to bed with a reading of 14 I don't take extra CPs but climb overnight so my morning BG would be around 19, othertimes I take a correction does and can be in target or hypo. It's never the same but I need to be in a routine for it to average out and it's playing the game which can be very annoying especially when trying to have tight control!! ![]() |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Daphne online will not load on my iphone I think for the iPhone 3G, the version you have is the latest and final OS release...........so it probably wont be the OS, unless the app has been developed for the 3GS onwards..........which would include the 3GS, 4, Touch and both iPads.......Simon might be able to shed some light....... ![]() |

So its looking like my theory may have some substance.............Its not actually my theory, a pumper suggested that because she was only on the quick insulin that this was why she counted........... |

Topic: General Discussion / weightwatchers Does the level of your BGs not effect your decision to exercise, it does with me.........I would prefer not to eat anything extra just so I can exercise, and so the window of opportunity to work out is slim, mainly after my dinner in the evening................... How do the rest of you do things...... ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / weightwatchers I'd be interested to know how you got on at weightwatchers Jess, and if it would benefit a type 1. Carb counting at first is daunting but once you get the hang of it it becomes second nature!Good luck ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / weightwatchers I joined weightwatchers last night with the aim to loose weight and make myself count my carbs (I haven't been focusing on this recently and I feel sluggish because my sugar levels are not great)! I figured if I can count points to loose weight I can count carbs for my diabetes!!Good luck!! |

Topic: General Discussion / Metabolic Rate Calculator Hi allIf you go to this site http://www.truthaboutabs.com/freebonus you can download amongst other things a metabolic rate calculator. This calculator will approximate how many calories your body needs daily to maintain the same weight. In addition, calculations are provided that approximate how many calories per day you would need to consume to either lose weight or gain weight depending on your goals. It is a MS Excel file. Hope it helps someone. Derek |
