Topic: General Discussion / Travelling Tips Sorry this is a bit late - but it could be helpful in the future. I saw on the Sheffield site that David Cragg had posted the following information for travel and insulin advice:http://www.voyagemd.com/ The website is owned by Professor Kerr, a Consultant Physician at Bournemouth Diabetes and Endocrine Centre. You enter your insulin and flight information and it suggests how you can manage any change in timezones. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / reliable metre readings I've been closely watching my metre readings on my omnipod, since the pod is very accurate in what it does a unreliable reading can cause issues,Over my life with type 1 I got into the routine of using more than 1 metre,1 for the car and the other for general readings. Since taking the omnipod ( which is fantastic) its technology is up to what I need, but it begs the question is the metre, I'm having doubts before Christmas I had a reading of 17.1 after four hours ,yet from experience I knew it was not right. I could have corrected there and then, but didn't I waited until I could re test with the car metre which was about 5 mins later, it read 6 .8 I re tested with the omnipod ( the metre is built in) again it read 13.8, Of course it was the strips that where at fault, A phone call and there where changed by the company. My question is this if pump technology is at a stage where it can control your BG to a good level the metres must always do the same. Even today by 2nd metre read 5.5 before I drove, yet the omnipod read 4.2. On MDI I would have eaten a cp to increase before driving I did on this occasion 2 hours later I was 9.9 on pod and 9.2 on the 2nd metre, Its OK setting targets but if metres and strips give readings like this it only causes us type 1 more stress and hard work. I'll add here both omnipod and the metre company where fantastic I couldn't have had better assistance with this matter. with MDI the difference of 1.5 is acceptable ,but with pumps its not close enough, with more and more products being manufacture in China for cost reasons I hope drug companies keep a close watch an quality control on strips etc. |

Topic: General Discussion / Dosing for fruit HiI hope this helps... I always have about 2 units for a banana depending on how large or small it is (1:1 ratio) and almost always have insulin for a pear unless it's pretty hard and not sweet, but with raw apples I don't always have any insulin. This works for me. I think I would have less insulin with a banana that was bordering on being green, pretty hard and not sweet; mind you spelling it out like that makes me wonder why I would eat one!! ![]() Grapes appear to send my blood sugar sky high and my New Year's resolution is to be more disciplined around them. Best wishes; it'd be good to know if you do make changes and how you get on. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / High bgl Welcome Led.Not a HCP..but we all hope to be able to help. You have just become insulin resistant whilst your body fights the infection. Use the sick day rules which you can find in the DAFNE Course Handbook...hyperlink in blue on the top right of the page under DAFNE TOOLS. When there...go to Coping when you are ill link. Have been struggling to control my Blood Glucose levels for a number of days too. Grotty Christmas cold strikes again! Get well soon. Best Wishes to you all. Regards Garry |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / High bgl I have recently had a cough and cold which is clearing. My insulin levels have almost tripled in this time and showing no signs of returning to pre illness levels. Should I be concerned? |

Topic: General Discussion / Dosing for fruit I find with apples and pears, then if I dose correctly for them, I will hypo, but then get pretty high afterwards. For me, the sugar released from these seem to be fairly slow release.I've had success with taking a half dose before eating, and taking the rest of the dose 2-3 hours later. This seems to stop the hypo as well as the high later on. All the best with it. Warwick. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / help I split my Lantus about a year ago and it helped a lot. You have to do it gradually though - drop a couple of units from your usual dose and add them back in at the other end of the day.It is quite common for BI needs to change over time, and especially in winter. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / help It might be worth trying your lantus at night.....then compensate with qa in the evening.....Next step would be splitting your lantus or moving to levemir.... |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / help I dont really have an answer to your problem but I am experiencing much the same problem. My blood sugars are in double figures in the morning, Ok by lunch time and the rest of the day. I think its my background insulin as on Lantus taken first thing in the morning and only lasts 16 hours. Have consulted my DAFNE coordinator but no reply yet. When do you take your background insulin and what background insulin are you on. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / help Only one ratio should be changed at a time, after identifying a pattern over several days. As Novorapidboi says it could be a background issue. Worth doing a test to check your background is ok. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / help No an HCP, but here are my thoughts....stress could be effecting your blood sugars, but its best to do a background test especially after an illness as your liver may have been providing more glucose help your recovery...... because you have had to increase 2 out of 3 ratios t the same time it may suggest a background insulin deficit.... what background insulin are you on... |

Topic: General Discussion / Travelling Tips Hi,I am sure it is the nerves but I was also assuming it was a longer flight than an hour (coming from Brisbane we can not go many places in an hour!). I would not medicate for an hour flight. Helen |

Topic: General Discussion / Travelling Tips
Hi Helen, many thanks. Normally just under the hour. I am assuming it is the nerves making my BG go so high. I suppose i should be just correcting when i land regardless of any insuling still being in my system. |

Topic: General Discussion / Travelling Tips Hi Rafa,I have a friend (non diabetic) who is similarly nervous when flying. She talked to her doctor and he prescribed Zanax (small dose..half a tablet for memory) which she takes about 2-3 hours before boarding. Only disadvantage for her is that it sometimes puts her to sleep on night flights. I believe it is an anti-anxiety drug. Talk to your doctor. How long are the flights? Helen |

Topic: General Discussion / Dosing for fruit I only have fruit for lunch - 1 banana, 2 satsumas and either a pear or an apple. So depending on if its an apple or pear I count 4CP or 4.5CP. My ratio is 1.5 : 1, so for these CPs would take either 6 or 7 units. Now I have a fairly active job, so on the days I'm out working I tend to knock off 1 unit, and take either 5 or 6 units. This works better for me, rather than reducing the ratio to 1 : 1, when I would get home from work and be above the optimum count. If I stick to this I'm usually where I need to be come tea-time ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Travelling Tips Didn’t want to start up a another thread so will ask in here. Basically i am a nervous flyer and am finding that my BG rockets the two hours before the flight and stays that way until i land and can correct. Is it actually possible that being nervous of flying is making my BG rise so high? Any help advice appreciated please? |

Topic: General Discussion / Eco Pod program
Hi vickyp Hope your tests went well, and you have more understanding of your lows Myself took to the pool for the 1st time since over two years, the guide for the pod states 60mins in a depth of 7.6m. I had no issues with the pod. I really enjoyed the whole swim, did 30 lengths just got to build myself up now. I'm finding since I stopped MDI my skin is so much better, no needle marks, an added bonus Hope your well Have a good Christmas and new year Brian.....x |
