Topic: Questions for HCPs / High bgl Welcome Led.Not a HCP..but we all hope to be able to help. You have just become insulin resistant whilst your body fights the infection. Use the sick day rules which you can find in the DAFNE Course Handbook...hyperlink in blue on the top right of the page under DAFNE TOOLS. When there...go to Coping when you are ill link. Have been struggling to control my Blood Glucose levels for a number of days too. Grotty Christmas cold strikes again! Get well soon. Best Wishes to you all. Regards Garry |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / High bgl I have recently had a cough and cold which is clearing. My insulin levels have almost tripled in this time and showing no signs of returning to pre illness levels. Should I be concerned? |

Topic: General Discussion / Dosing for fruit I find with apples and pears, then if I dose correctly for them, I will hypo, but then get pretty high afterwards. For me, the sugar released from these seem to be fairly slow release.I've had success with taking a half dose before eating, and taking the rest of the dose 2-3 hours later. This seems to stop the hypo as well as the high later on. All the best with it. Warwick. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / help I split my Lantus about a year ago and it helped a lot. You have to do it gradually though - drop a couple of units from your usual dose and add them back in at the other end of the day.It is quite common for BI needs to change over time, and especially in winter. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / help It might be worth trying your lantus at night.....then compensate with qa in the evening.....Next step would be splitting your lantus or moving to levemir.... |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / help I dont really have an answer to your problem but I am experiencing much the same problem. My blood sugars are in double figures in the morning, Ok by lunch time and the rest of the day. I think its my background insulin as on Lantus taken first thing in the morning and only lasts 16 hours. Have consulted my DAFNE coordinator but no reply yet. When do you take your background insulin and what background insulin are you on. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / help Only one ratio should be changed at a time, after identifying a pattern over several days. As Novorapidboi says it could be a background issue. Worth doing a test to check your background is ok. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / help No an HCP, but here are my thoughts....stress could be effecting your blood sugars, but its best to do a background test especially after an illness as your liver may have been providing more glucose help your recovery...... because you have had to increase 2 out of 3 ratios t the same time it may suggest a background insulin deficit.... what background insulin are you on... |

Topic: General Discussion / Travelling Tips Hi,I am sure it is the nerves but I was also assuming it was a longer flight than an hour (coming from Brisbane we can not go many places in an hour!). I would not medicate for an hour flight. Helen |

Topic: General Discussion / Travelling Tips
Hi Helen, many thanks. Normally just under the hour. I am assuming it is the nerves making my BG go so high. I suppose i should be just correcting when i land regardless of any insuling still being in my system. |

Topic: General Discussion / Travelling Tips Hi Rafa,I have a friend (non diabetic) who is similarly nervous when flying. She talked to her doctor and he prescribed Zanax (small dose..half a tablet for memory) which she takes about 2-3 hours before boarding. Only disadvantage for her is that it sometimes puts her to sleep on night flights. I believe it is an anti-anxiety drug. Talk to your doctor. How long are the flights? Helen |

Topic: General Discussion / Dosing for fruit I only have fruit for lunch - 1 banana, 2 satsumas and either a pear or an apple. So depending on if its an apple or pear I count 4CP or 4.5CP. My ratio is 1.5 : 1, so for these CPs would take either 6 or 7 units. Now I have a fairly active job, so on the days I'm out working I tend to knock off 1 unit, and take either 5 or 6 units. This works better for me, rather than reducing the ratio to 1 : 1, when I would get home from work and be above the optimum count. If I stick to this I'm usually where I need to be come tea-time ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Travelling Tips Didn’t want to start up a another thread so will ask in here. Basically i am a nervous flyer and am finding that my BG rockets the two hours before the flight and stays that way until i land and can correct. Is it actually possible that being nervous of flying is making my BG rise so high? Any help advice appreciated please? |

Hi vickyp Hope your tests went well, and you have more understanding of your lows Myself took to the pool for the 1st time since over two years, the guide for the pod states 60mins in a depth of 7.6m. I had no issues with the pod. I really enjoyed the whole swim, did 30 lengths just got to build myself up now. I'm finding since I stopped MDI my skin is so much better, no needle marks, an added bonus Hope your well Have a good Christmas and new year Brian.....x |

Topic: General Discussion / Dosing for fruit
Hi gari I can't answer your question on fruit, myself and many type 1 don't use or reduce their midway bolus. Try and not take any bolus with your lunch see if your BG is high after the cooling off period. Many foods affect the break down of carbs, nuts is a good one almonds in some type 1 level out your BG levels so you don't peak high I'm not one of these people that's because where all different If you try and not use bolus at lunch I can eat up to 3 CP's without taking bolus Just test after 2 hours see which direction your going or if its staying at the same BG level before you had something to eat. If after 4 hours your OK you know you need a lot less at lunch Type1 42 yrs MDI 3 months pod |

Topic: General Discussion / Dosing for fruit Hi everyone. I know we are told to dose for fruit but does anyone else find that they do not need to count for some fruit. I have banana and apple for lunch most days. And the other foods I eat I know I am counting my carbs correctly yet I still on occasions seem to get hypos after 2 or 3 hours. I wondered if I burn up the fruit fairly quickly do I need to dose fully for it. Any suggestions. Thanks |

Topic: General Discussion / Help Hi Delboy, you're completely right. Stress is a big factor in increasing bg levels. Also, if you've been ill, your immune system may be a bit lower, so that could also make your levels go up. Hopefully when things settle down for you, and you're feeling back to normal, your levels will go back down, and you can go back to your original rations. Just something to keep an eye on. Hope you're ok![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Snacks I usually keep a bottle of Lucozade handy by the bedside just in case I wake during the night feeling low, but then again you have to be careful that you don't over drink too much of it or you will go the opposite way. Also what's good is some simple biscuits and snacks that are about 1 to 1.5 cps each and they will bring your BG up a little but not too much, just to get you to breakfast.![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Snacks I'm interested to know what others tuck away in all those hidden-away places, for snacking.Last night at 3am I was woken up with the numb lips/pins & needles around the nose which tells me I'm nearing a hypo. Foraging in my bedside table I have Dextrose/glucose tablets and my current snack of .....................small box of sultanas/raisins. I also keep them in my glove box in the car, my sports bag, and my hand bag. [I didn't do a blood test at 3am, but at breakfast this morning I was at 7.2, so job done - well done Mel ![]() I'm now looking for an alternative/different snack - what do you keep hidden away, "just in case".......................? |
