Topic: General Discussion / Levemir clogging needles

It's best to use a new needle each and every time! Otherwise your needles are no longer hygienic!

Yes I get 'clogging' with levemir too. I use the disposable pens so it can't be a dodgy pen, unless there are a lot of dodgy ones!!
I reuse needles but am trying to stop - just easier to not have to faff about changing it sometimes Embarassed

Topic: General Discussion / Contact lens

Hello Meltow,

Like Alturn, I had blurred vision around the time of my diagnosis and my optometrist wouldn't prescribe new glasses for me until my BGs had settled down to normal.

After that, I wore the same glasses, in fact I'm wearing them now. They are my backup pair as I got a new prescription a couple of months ago, but I can use either without issue.

I've never worn contacts though so can't comment on that.

Meltow - Blurred vision is one of the symptoms of high BM levels, so was most likely caused by diabetes not lenses, I also had blurred vision before diagnosis, and have it again if BM is consistently high - but since doing DAFNE nearly 2 years ago it has not recurred as my BM is not going so high and low.

I wear glasses - I had lenses for about a year a long time ago but they didn't work for me.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carb Links section added

I was just looking through the Carb Links page and I think the Harvester link is out of date. It's shown as http://www.harvester.co.uk/nutritional-information.

Topic: General Discussion / Contact lens

Before being diagnosed as diabetic I wore contact lenses. Leading up to my diagnosis, about 6 months before, I had problems with my lenses. Eyesight becoming blurry periodically, and my eyes were definitely less moist. I reverted to wearing glasses again.
Having never had problems before, and comfortably worn lenses for about 15 years, was the onset of my diabetes the cause of the eye problems? I don't know and have never asked.
Nowadays, I only tend to wear them as a one off.

Topic: General Discussion / Burning Palm

I wondered if that might be the case.
Sorry to be a bit negative but I'm afraid that as long term type 1s we are prone to carpel tunnel syndrome and to developing nerve pinching of the finger nerves within the palms of our hands.
This is caused by the thickening of the sheaths which carry the sinews and nerves to each finger.
It is a quite common outcome of diabetes.
You may find over time that it develops into a trigger finger for which you may need surgery.
I have been type 1 for 35 years and over the years have had to have both carpel tunnels and three fingers fixed so far.
Afraid I am now making an appointment to see my friendly upper limb surgeon again for another finger.
Regards
Garry

Topic: General Discussion / Aviva Universal Code

Hello,

I have requested the new Black Universal Code for Accu-chek Aviva, and I received a grey chip with code "113", instead of a black chip with code "111", I'm unable to check it on my glucometer right now and I'm not sure if I received the correct chip.

Has any one got this chip as well ? Do you know if it works like the Black chip ?

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetic burnout

Hi Sharon...oh do I get diabetic burnout but it is usually associated with a stretch of difficulty running OK BGs. While things are going smoothly I am OK but when they begin to go haywire (winter for example) I become quite snarky at the whole thing. Fortunately it usually is not too prolonged and I can work my way through it... All the best with the group.

Glen4 I think is is just exhaustion having to deal with what you have to deal with if you are working hard at managing the diabetes. I appreciate that some people think it is all OK and everything is easy but I fight against it! I am told my accommodation of the demands is typically adolescent! I think it has more to do with personality and our coping strategies.

Topic: General Discussion / Burning Palm

I read a lot of people experiencing weird physical stuff on this forum which may or may not be to do with their diabetes. I think it's great that we have some place to go when we've got problems. My present gripe is that for two days my left palm feels like it's burning or that I've slapped something really hard two minutes ago and it's still recovering. I have no problem with my feet, legs or my right hand and arm. It's just my left hand. There is no sign of damage and I do martial arts so I could've just knocked it a few days ago. It's not painful; just really annoying. I spoke to a nurse at the hospital today and he told me that he doesn't think it's neuropathy and it could just be a trapped nerve. Ride it out for a few days and see my GP if it persists. I'm pretty sure it's not neuropathy, but I wondered if anyone else has experienced this or something similar? If you have experienced neuroathy, how did it affect you? Just gaging this situation because it may be the very early signs!

I think it's more common to start with problems with the feet and legs and not just one hand. Weird though, right?
