Topic: General Discussion / Travel Just a caution...activate your Frio wallet (they are great) at the airport after you have gone through all checks as when travelling I was challenged regarding the "amount" of gel I had as it exceeded the 100ml limit. Ended up OK but took a lot of talking. I then began activating as soon as I went through all checks. Coming home has never been a problem. Also agree with "bookworm" keep it all with you in hand luggage and insist hand luggage be in the locker immediately above your seat as you know where it is all of the time. You do not want somebody moving it to another location so they can keep their hand luggage in the locker above their head. I say I may need it quickly and need to be able to access it in the middle of the night! I also travel with minimum hand luggage. Trust your son has a great time. Helen |

Topic: General Discussion / Travel Been a long time since I've been abroad, but last time I traveled I was told to keep insulin in hand luggage, as it could freeze in the hold. Also, might be worth getting a letter from GP explaining about being diabetic, in case there are any problems at the airport (I think you have to pay for this though). |

Topic: General Discussion / Gym I have no snack ideas unfortunately but I would ask if you could reduce insulin further.......when do you go to the gym? is there a basal insulin dose after you go? you could try reducing that? it also depends on why your going to the gym, general fitness or to lose weight? if the later then an insulin reduction would be preferable, if not a snack may be better. digestive biscuits may do the trick |

Topic: General Discussion / Gym Hi, I've recently started going to the gym & want some advice on healthy snacks to have before I go (I'm sick of bananas lol). Been advised by my consultant to reduce insulin by 20% on days that I go, which I d, but still finding that my sugar drops quite low afterwards so looking for slow releasing carbohydrate snack/food. Hope you can help :-) |

My BGs always go high on holiday. I don't exercise as much which really contributes to it. I often find that I need to drastically (up to 30%) increase my BI as a result. |

Topic: General Discussion / Travel +1 for the Frio wallet. I love mine and I've heard of people using them successfully in hot places like the Middle East with no issues. Mine has worked well in 40+ degree heat in Melbourne. You can get different sizes. http://friouk.com/ |

Topic: General Discussion / High Blood Sugars on Holiday the different temperatures, lets assume higher temperatures, lol, may be having an effect on the glucose secretion from the liver.your body may be working harder to keep cool for example, so the way to tackle that is with your background insulin, both day and night if your on twice a day..... I would say a 10% increase would be a good start, just make sure your always prepared for hypos...... I think its worth the risk inn order to get better sugars, as it can make you feel a lot better and energetic, which is what you need when on Holiday.... have fun and drop back in for an update. ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Travel A lot of people use the FRIO wallets to store their insulin when on the move........you just dip it in water which activates the ingredient inside which keep the contents cool...... I suppose just like at home, he will need to keep all his diabetic paraphernalia in one place, so I would imagine a bag of some kind would do the job. Insulin reserves can be kept in a fridge at the hotel/apartment etc... Being a new diabetic, I assume there will be someone there who is aware of his condition and is prepared for hypos and the like.....? |

Topic: General Discussion / Travel Can anyone suggest the best kit for travelling in hot countries. My son has recently been diagnosed Type 1 and is travelling to Greece for a week shortly. I'm worried about him keeping his pens cool and safe and want to make sure he keeps everything in one place ( blood monitor/ needles/ etc)Thanks Paul |

Topic: General Discussion / High Blood Sugars on Holiday Hi,I'm on holiday in Gran Canaria just now with the family (all inclusive hotel), I'm counting my carbs breakfast, lunch and dinner however my BG readings have been constantly high eg 18.4, 23.4 etc..this is despite correcting every time, the only thing my wife and I can think of is that estrella beer is very sugary, food has higher Carb content than back home or Pepsi light isn't light! (I've increased fast acting to test this to no avail),I've also increased overnight background from 17 to 20,still high in morning! Any suggestions? Thanks |

Topic: General Discussion / Faulty Novopens The advice there is to have a couple of spare pens at your disposal! Before injecting dial up 2 units & depress! Checking for any faults!![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Faulty Novopens I was out Saturday afternoon and when I went to take my insulin the Novopen failed to work correctly. I was able to dial up but not depress the plunger and take my insulin dose. As a result I had to rush home a get a replacement pen. Has anyone else had a similar problem and what do you normally do in such a case.Unfortunately my blood glucose levels were very high so I had no choice but to go home to take a dose to get things back to normal. I think the pen may have been faulty at breakfast and may not have given me the correct breakfast dose as there was no other explanation for my high lunch time levels. If it had been normal I would have just skipped lunch. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / The Glycaemic Index According to my "GI & GL counter" book, blackberries (and most fruits but not checked them all) have low GI (and GL) assuming they are eaten raw or without sugar. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Sponsorship I'm looking into entering the 2015 Victa London Marathon. Spaces are limited. I'd have an increased or rather better chance if I chose a selected charity- the British Diabetic Association! I'm wondering how & if there is a chance of this happening? Time is running out!![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / The Glycaemic Index I'm sure they do! I know raspberries have low GI! I think all berries are similar- check with a nutritionist to be precise! |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetes gadgets Thanks, glen4, and Muna AH, I think the Novo "credit card" passports are really good. I'm afraid mjne is just the standard NHS insulin passport which should have been issued to all patients on insulin in the UK sometime in 2012. It has a card cover with paper folding up into a credit card size and as glen4 indicates it has details of the exact insulin one is on. Mine also has the contact details of my GP and my diabetes specialist nurse.I forgot to mention that I also carry a blood sugar diary as it's easier to see exactly whats going on at a glance on paper rathrr than relying on electronic memory in the meter or pump. As I have to do about 10 blood sugars a day I find the one one can download from the Diabetes Support Forum (dsf) a bit more convenient than the standard DAFNE one ( no disrespect to DAFNE!) -there is more room for details and more sugars and bolus doses on one line. Ikeep a pen slipped into the little strap across the meter case. |
