Topic: General Discussion / Vinegar tablets

Thanks Glen, yeah feel like can see the light at end of the tunnel now. When started the DAFNE course had practically zero hypo awareness, now I'm feeling it when I'm at 4! Been advised to keep BI at 7 for just now feel comfortable with it so going to continue to eat pistachios at 5 AM for the time being, as you said a tasty snack anyway. Think a possibility for me could be to eat even a slice of toast earlier in the morning and take QA plus extra if needed as usually I don't eat till nearly lunch time and my sugars continue to rise until then. Exercise isn't always an option for me as running around after 3 kids but I suppose that's exercise in itself

It's not something I've really struggled with Vicky!? On my working week I've got a set routine of times + CP portions- I'm almost there on my ratios I think??? It's at the weekend- late nights/ lie-ins that can throw a spanner in the works! Generally your BG 1st thing in the morning shouldn't rise by no more than 1.5 mmol, if everything is normal! Mine rose overnight once from 6.5-20! I've raised my nighttime BI since! Underestimating CP's doesn't help. Also if you were becoming ill- all to be taken into account Vicky! Your night time BI can sometimes catch it's 2nd wind mid morning with your breakfast QA! It's trial + error- you're getting there! Nuts are a tasty snack( pistachios, natural bars) Very Happy

Hi Glen, yeah apparently cider vinegar tablets at night help the BG levels in the morning. Heard about exercise helping as well but that's not always an option so thought would look up other options. Also read that snacking on nuts if you wake through the night helps, tried this last night and sugars were perfect this morning! One thing I'm unsure of though is if you should correct with dawn phenomenon in the morning?

It's a hard 1 as everyone is different! I've experienced both highs + lows! You load up on carbs and are sluggish! You go light then get that adrenaline rush and your BG is in double figures! I reckon plenty of testing with lots of practice will help you to decide!? All about trial + error! I'd recommend drinking plenty of water. Only having lucozade as last resort- it doesn't take much for your BG to rise! How about a tuna pasta bake 2 hours before, a protein shake once you have finished!? Carrying jelly babies in your pocket in case you get caught unawares!

I've not read or heard that before! Would it be cider vinegar? As these are good for breaking down fats/sugars- overall toxins in your system! Though I've never tried them! Exercising in the late afternoon- evening could help you balance your BG readings Vicky! Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Starting the Gym

Hi there

I asked a similar question at my DAFNE catch up appointment yesterday as I want to start exercising but every time I do I tend to get hypos. I was recommended the website:

www.excarbs.com

As a good starting point as its less complicated than some of the others.

Hope it helps

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone on here has tried vinegar tablets for dawn phenomenon? I've read online that taking these at night before bed help to combat it

Topic: General Discussion / Starting the Gym

I presently do martial arts on a Thursday and Sunday. I occasionally have random hypos during training, but nothing I'm concerned with as my instructor is great. I'm about to start the gym on Monday, Wednesday and Friday straight after work for the purposes of getting my strength and fitness levels up. I'm going to have a banana about half an hour before, drink Lucozade while I'm there and then have a snack as soon as I'm finished; testing my blood before and after. I will then go home and have my evening meal as soon as possible where I'll slightly reduce my Humalog insulin dose.

I presently take 24 units of Lantus at around 8pm. I work on a 1 to 10g ratio for my quick acting. My BMs are presently not brilliant, but not totally out of control. I think my last HBA1C was around 8 and had come down from the previous months. They are set to get better still next time.

Any thoughts or advice on things to consider? It's awhile since doing DAFNE for me!

Thanks

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hand wipes

I just completed my Dafne course this week and we asked the same question about wipes. We were told not to use wipes with alcohol in them but were recommended if using wipes to get the ones AccuCheck do. I just bought them in Boots yesterday. £1.29 for 10 of them. Handy for when out and about!

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Help with BG levels

Hi, thanks for the info. It's good to know if it is this dawn thing it's quite common. Tbh I'm not sure if it's a recent thing, my BG levels were out of control for a while before doing the DAFNE course so just starting to really notice these things. Going to keep an eye on it for a week and if my sugars are still high in the morning I'll look into the dawn phenomenon.

It definitely sounds like dawn phenomenon. If you search the forums for dawn phenomenon or dp, you will find that you are definitely not alone in this.

For myself,I find that exercising helps me avoid it. When I stop exercising for a couple of days or more, I end up getting high in the mornings too. Apart from that, short of getting up at 5 in the morning every day and injecting QA to cover the rush of hormones, the only way I know of beating DP is using a pump where you can increase the insulin you are getting from 4 am onwards.

Is this just something recent? It becomes a bit of a balancing act between overnight hypos and high morning blood glucose. One thing I have been told which I find helpful is that injecting QA directly into muscle, increases the action of QA by about 2. So whereas I usually have to wait 3-4 hour for my QA to completely act, injecting into muscle shortens that to 1-2 hours. It is very useful for lowering high BGs very quickly. I have found that injecting into my deltoid (shoulder muscle at top of arm) works best for me.

Take care and hope it is just a temporary thing.

Hi, I've moved my night time BI to later last night, will monitor this for a week and hope it makes a difference. Yeah I rotate my injection sites with every injection, I think I'm expecting things to change overnight need to learn to be patient. Thank you both for the advice Smile

May I ask do you cycle and move your injection sites about?
We all need discipline to spread the injections about in order to best control our insulin absorbtion rate.
Please review your injection sites and avoid any that show bumps or tenderness.
You can use your online diary to help you acheive the spread needed.
Regards
Garry

A weeks diary of your blood glucose/cps will help more but from what you have put I can see a problem with your lunch, you put down that your blood glucose was 4.4mmol/l you had 4.8cp and you took 5units of QA plus 1 when you should have had 4.8cp plus 1cp and 5 units of QA also you could try having a carb free lunch for a couple of days and seeing what your blood glucose results are.

Have you spoken to a nutritionist Natalie? You could be allergic or intolerant to certain foods perhaps!? Maybe have smaller portions, with more meals spread throughout the day! Don't always load up on carbs! Try to have a source of protein with each meal + drink plenty of water! Hope this is helpful!? Very Happy
