Topic: Site Development / results graphs

hi there.
i want to send my doc a month's worth of readings as a linear (?) graph starting at the beginning of the month and ending at the end of the month. (Would look like how our test books looked years ago). your graph separates meals but i want mine to show what my results are doing over 24 hours over a month. how do i do this? I thought it would be really easy but cant find a graph that works like this.

I will try a new pen. If no success I am going to speak to the diabetes nurse. If it's happening on the same part of my body could it be lipos?

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE MONITORING DIARIES

Pat
I print my own diaries and you are welcome to have a copy of the Word documents I've created for the detail pages and the cover. The trouble is that you'll need A5 size plain paper (for the detail pages) and I use A5 size photographic paper for the cover, but I suppose you could have a plain paper cover.. You'll also need (of course) a printer that can accept A5 stationery, and a stapler to allow you to staple the middle of an A5 page.

Thanks Peter & Alturn.
It looks like I may have to try using to DAFNE app to see how I get on, yes I can also get online to look at the Diary. Sad Just need a few days of readings to see how it looks.

If all else fails I will purchase some from your online link .

Thanks again
Pat

Pat, You can buy them from the DAFNE site (http://www.dafne.uk.com]). See DAFNE Shop under People with Type 1 Diabetes. The cost is £1.95 plus P&P. Alternatively stick with using the IPhone app and then download the results to a PC where you will be able to print them.

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE MONITORING DIARIES

I got some diaries from my meter supplier (Accu-chek) but this was some time ago, and the format may differ slightly from DAFNE.

I don't use them anymore as I record all my entries on the DAFNE web-site (do you still have access?) and in an OpenOffice spreadsheet (don't have MS Office, or an iPhone) where I can play with the data and also identify trends as highs/lows appear in different colours.

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE MONITORING DIARIES

Could someone please give me some help or advice.
I am now having problems obtaining the DAFNE diaries from my SE region (Ashford Kent) as it's no longer running DAFNE.

Has somebody a printable version they could suggest, or maybe a hard copy alternative ?

I have started using the DAFNE IPhone app but would prefer looking at a full paper page layout to identify trends more easily. Also I find it quicker then typing it all in on my ipone.

Any help would be appreciated Thanks.

Best Regards,
Pat.

Muna I am a secondary teacher and staff say the same to me, I also get 'well should you be eating that?' if I am eating chocolate or a cake. It is so annoying as I have great control over my diabetes. But they all assume that that type of food should not be eaten by a diabetic! It is very annoying, on the other hand I have my mum who constantly says i must eat...she is scared of me having hypos (was having 4/5 a day now maybe 1 a month) without the extra eating.

Hi everyone,

This reminds with funny situations i went through at work. I work as a preschool teacher and one of our lovely staff is at least thirty kg over weight. When any child brings in a birthday cake to celebrate with the other children and teachers, that staff would come to me and say "Oh Muna, I am sorry but you can't have this" but inside I laugh and wonder who shouldn't eat that piece of cake???? Wink with my respect to all non diabetic over weight people.

Cheers

Hi Phil

I was diagnosed type 1 age 29 and had it 19 years now and like you I think type 2 should be named differently as we all know its related to poor and crappy lifestyle choices etc. I hate when people say oh I couldn't inject I'm scared of needles pffftttt (angry face) I just say oh trust me on this you would inject as fast as you could if your life depended on it. I usually get how come your Diabetic you're not fat grrrrrrrr. Sorry for the rant lol.

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetic burnout

I usually explain why I feel that way by looking at the 5 stages of grief. We lost something when we were diagnosed and we'll never get it back - we're bound to feel burnout.

The 5 stages are:

Denial
Anger
Bargaining
Depression
Acceptance

I think I cycle through at least three regularly. It also explains why we're twice as likely to suffer from depression like most chronic condition sufferers.

I recommend learning about depression and anxiety treatments - particularly Cognitive Behavioural Therapy taught thinking as this is not a natural skill. It really should be taught as standard at schools imo but most only do it after reaching a point of extreme distress.

I won't be joining the FB group because I have no intention of joining FB again. Good luck with it though.

I will however take this opportunity to recommend the @OurDiabetes community on Twitter; run voluntarily by David Cragg and his team. They run weekly discussions (called "Tweetchats" - explanation here) and I have met some lovely diabetics through it to help me with the isolation that comes with being Type 1 surrounded by non-diabetics. You do not have to be on Twitter to read the latest on the #ourD tag

Take care y'all.

Topic: General Discussion / Non Diabetics

I've rarely known any other diabetics in person for most of my life (I was diagnosed age 5, now almost 30). They haven't really got any incentive to know unless they know someone with it, but even then, still common to fail to understand that there is a difference.

What has annoyed me more recently is working in an office full of weight insecure people, I get laughed at for being okay with going to somewhere like Greggs as a diabetic. Even after telling people that I only carb count for my meds, the assumption that I'm weight watching remains. Might as well be talking to a brick wall.

Another thing is explaining that the reason I don't want to visit a restaurant is because it is too carb guessworky. People think I'm on a diet (never have been, and never will be) or if I ask a restaurant if they have the nutritional information for their food, they answer like I asked "what is your healthiest dish". Example: https://twitter.com/chopstixuk/status/463749193858035712 They didn't even offer the per 100g. Great way to lose custom imo - and a great way for me to lose yet another socialising opportunity.

People and businesses don't care enough to listen. On the plus side, you know who your friends are more easily.

Yeah know what you mean! I've had type 1 since I was 5 & never been fat/overweight! I'm 34 now! You get narrow minded or uneducated people that seem to think either a mars bar or dose of insulin will do the trick! Not knowing at the time which would be effective! You get asked silly questions- 'did you eat too many sweets when you we're a child'?

Topic: General Discussion / How to Remember If You've Done an Injection

Like the Novopen Echo there is Timesulin - http://timesulin.com/ a replacement lid that knows when you've taken the lid off for long enough to have done an injection, not just a check of amount in cartridge. Not 100% fool proff as you could take the lid off leave it then not inject, but its better than nothing and might be easier than changing your current pens/insulin.

Topic: General Discussion / Bionic Pancreas

Never mind a bionic pancreas, I would be happy with a real time CGM on the NHS. The hba1c and control could be so much better, like SimonC said reducing costs in complications down the line.

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetic burnout

I get this alot, just naffed off with all the BG tests etc... I am a keen cyclist and the constant BG tests / hypos / gels on the bike, it just gets me down having to do it, plus when high I feel lethargic and can't keep up with the group (which naffs me off), so I give more insulin, then I'm hypo and don't have the energy or too busy eating to keep up!

I guess most diabetics must get this judging by the need for a thread and facebook group. Mentioned it to the GP once, he was shocked that I still felt like this after 30 years, I feel like its because of the 30 years I feel like this.

Topic: General Discussion / Non Diabetics

Hi,

Just thought I'd put this out to see what other people had experienced.

I use Accu-Chek mobile, which if you don't know is a BG meter that doesn't use strips, but looks like an 90s mobile phone in design. I had it on my desk at work and someone came over and we were talking and she asked what it was I showed her and said it was a BG meter and I was diabetic, she didn't realise that BG changed and that having a few injections didn't just make diabetes better. I had to explain (felt the need to) about the yo-yo balancing act of being an artificial pancreas and keeping BG between 4 and 8 is blinking hard work, showed her the graphs on this site.

The only diabetes she had come into contact with was Type 2 where they had a few pills and tested once a day if they remembered, bit dif to DAFNE and a sporty Type 1, I do more than 10 BGs a day when doing a days cycling Shocked

What are other peoples experiences of non diabetics and there understanding of the issues. I hate it when you see something like 'Embarrassing Fat Bodies' and they keep talking about the risks of Diabetes due to being fat, I have never been huge, since cycling less so, but when I say I'm diabetic I know what alot of people must think! I wish Type 2 had a different name as we get the stigma for something that is managed completely differently.
