Topic: General Discussion / Non Diabetics Hi,Just thought I'd put this out to see what other people had experienced. I use Accu-Chek mobile, which if you don't know is a BG meter that doesn't use strips, but looks like an 90s mobile phone in design. I had it on my desk at work and someone came over and we were talking and she asked what it was I showed her and said it was a BG meter and I was diabetic, she didn't realise that BG changed and that having a few injections didn't just make diabetes better. I had to explain (felt the need to) about the yo-yo balancing act of being an artificial pancreas and keeping BG between 4 and 8 is blinking hard work, showed her the graphs on this site. The only diabetes she had come into contact with was Type 2 where they had a few pills and tested once a day if they remembered, bit dif to DAFNE and a sporty Type 1, I do more than 10 BGs a day when doing a days cycling What are other peoples experiences of non diabetics and there understanding of the issues. I hate it when you see something like 'Embarrassing Fat Bodies' and they keep talking about the risks of Diabetes due to being fat, I have never been huge, since cycling less so, but when I say I'm diabetic I know what alot of people must think! I wish Type 2 had a different name as we get the stigma for something that is managed completely differently. Phil |

Topic: General Discussion / Injecting If you're injecting into slim/lean areas then 4mm is fine! Bigger needles & pinching up of the skin is intended for fattier skin tissue! You're changing sites regularly? |

Topic: General Discussion / Injecting Do you think I should be using a bigger needle? The insulin stings when it's goes in everytime yes |

Topic: General Discussion / Injecting You shouldn't need to pinch with 4mm needles! Have you got any firm areas of skin? Does it hurt to inject? |

Topic: General Discussion / Injecting I find it happens less if I stop pinching the skin before withdrawing the needle. |

Topic: General Discussion / Injecting It happens more in my stomach. I'm on the 4mm too. I was on 8mm. I'm considering ringing and speaking to my diabetes nurse. It happens on every injection now. |

Topic: General Discussion / Injecting Yeah, you're not the only one Lucy! I've switched to the 4mm needles for the past 14 months. We're told to count to 6 before withdrawing! It happens occasionally. But like you say once can be enough! It seems like the whole dose has been wasted! |

Topic: General Discussion / Injecting HiI just wondering if anyone is or has experienced that when injecting as you are pulling the needle out that all the insulin hasn't been injected as it drops out and I'm worried that I'm not getting all the insulin. I hold the pen in for 10-15 seconds before withdrawing and I frequently change my injection sites. It's happened more since I changed to smaller needles and disposable pens. Please can anyone help? |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android App - Correction for high BG You also cannot add your own entries to the CP listing apparently.Android user here too. Edit: Does the fact ketones don't display correctly too also an Android only thing? I keep having to add the ketones to the notes because showing "true" in the ketones bit is pretty poor. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android App - Correction for high BG Mark is right, there is no auto-correction in the Android version. Perhaps we could persuade Simon to move to a better phone and start developing for Android |

Topic: Site Development / CSV export The following will handle the data returned in the csv file, with or without spaces around the + or - and return the total. You'll need to replace M7 with the cell containing the data which can be done by Replace function with "Look In" set to formula. There's probably a more concise way of doing this, but this does work.PS. I like having the corrections with the data in a single cell as it makes it easy to handle it all in one string, but the I'm not looking to undertake calculations but instead to change the display to align breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime readings. =IF(ISNUMBER(M7),M7,IF(ISERR(FIND("+",M7)),LEFT(M7,FIND("-",M7)-1)-RIGHT(M7,LEN(M7)-FIND("-",M7)),LEFT(M7,FIND("+",M7)-1)+RIGHT(M7,LEN(M7)-FIND("+",M7)))) |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / CP free lunch I've seen the same and was recently by a consultant that when having a Carb Free period to monitor BI behaviour that it was much more reliable to skip a meal altogether rather than skipping carbs but continuing to eat proteins etc. That advice certainly helped me to improve my understanding of my morning BI dose. |

Topic: Site Development / Diary Sync? Hi Oliver,Do you see an error message when the app tries to upload your entries (when you say tries can you elaborate a bit more on how you know it's trying too) ? Thanks, Simon |

Topic: General Discussion / Travel I have discovered through various travel experiences, (but not on a beach holiday!) that a good quality camera bag keeps insulin quite cool ( its worked OK in Las Vegas and San Francisco!) I make use of the room service fridges for stock. At the time I was not aware of the Frio option until I went on DAFNE! As for keeping stuff together: I m still looking for the perfect compact carrier: again camera bag is good but not perfect! |

Topic: General Discussion / Travel If possible take two BG monitors. I have had more problems with monitors than anything else...it is just insurance. I also purchased a large soft lunch "box" and used that to store everything (including the trio wallet). Helen |

Topic: General Discussion / Travel Just a caution...activate your Frio wallet (they are great) at the airport after you have gone through all checks as when travelling I was challenged regarding the "amount" of gel I had as it exceeded the 100ml limit. Ended up OK but took a lot of talking. I then began activating as soon as I went through all checks. Coming home has never been a problem. Also agree with "bookworm" keep it all with you in hand luggage and insist hand luggage be in the locker immediately above your seat as you know where it is all of the time. You do not want somebody moving it to another location so they can keep their hand luggage in the locker above their head. I say I may need it quickly and need to be able to access it in the middle of the night! I also travel with minimum hand luggage. Trust your son has a great time. Helen |

Topic: General Discussion / Travel Been a long time since I've been abroad, but last time I traveled I was told to keep insulin in hand luggage, as it could freeze in the hold. Also, might be worth getting a letter from GP explaining about being diabetic, in case there are any problems at the airport (I think you have to pay for this though). |
