Topic: Questions for HCPs / Help with BG levels What insulins are you using? You could be more sensitive/responsive to 1 rather than the other!? I'm on Levemir twice daily! I always leave a 10-12 hour gap in-between! I also use Novorapid at mealtimes! My HCP'S said to leave at least a 7-8 hour gap between your BI doses! So no problem there. Maybe take your evening BI a tad earlier!? Leave for 3 days, try to find a pattern!? Increasing from 7-8 units of BI at night is very little I know! With 8 you're having night hypos, yet with 7 you jump from normal(5-![]() ![]() ![]() |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / BG REACTIONS I normally try to start with a BG of 8 or 9 but playing after work sometimes find that difficult to acheive.Played last Monday and started at 6.4 but by the 4th I was already at 4.4 and had to resort to starting the sandwiches. I walk much further than other people on the course however...home course is 7,200 yards but I must walk 9000+...zig-zag...maybe you know the feeling! Regards Garry |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / BG REACTIONS Hi Garry.Do you adjust your doseage prior to golf, or do you operate normally and take plenty of supplies? Since I moved onto carb counting in November last year I have had no problems with any hypo issue during golf, but the other Saturday was the first time I measured my BG after golf. I did once measure my BG when I got home after my normal routine of 2 pints of orange/soda, and the reading was high then. However, as I had recovered by dinner time, I "solved" the problem by ignoring the reading at the time, and subsequently not bothering to measure until the next meal in the evening. If I did have something to eat, I used a QA in line with the specific intake. Clearly, I would feel more comfortable to be able to explain the readings, and where the glucose had dissipated to. Regards Alan |

Have you tried leaving a 12 hour gap between injecting each dose of your BI? Maybe try that for a few days!? If there is no change, I would either increase/decrease either 1 of your BI dosages! It's hard to tell without a diary of readings to look at! |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Help with BG levels Hi, I've just recently finished the DAFNE course, before the course I was having constant severe hypos with very little awareness. Since finishing the course the hypos have become a lot less frequent but every morning my BG levels are through the roof! When going to bed my sugars are at a normal level, I check them at 3 in the morning and they're still normal but by 8:30 they're sitting between 16-20. I take 7 units of BI at night between 10-10:30 then the same again in the morning about 8:30. I've tried 8 units and have hypos through the night, I've tried correcting in the morning and have hypos in the afternoon. I've checked my BG levels at 6:30 in the morning on a couple of occasions and they've still been at a normal level so it seems to be between 6:30-8:30 that they rise. Any advice anyone could give me would be appreciated as my partner and myself are desperate to start trying for a baby. Thank you. Vicki![]() |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / BG REACTIONS Hi Warwick. Thanks for your response. I think there is a pattern emerging now I am testing more. Golf seems to drop my BG to mid 4's. Surprising as a round of golf is like a 5 mile walk in 4 hours - hardly strenuous. I think I shall reduce my orange/ soda to 1 pint, and then settle for diet coke (or beer). Even though my reading is high when I get home, it seems to dissipate of its own accord, and I certainly feel ok. I was thinking of reducing my am QA insulin on a golf day, either drop the ratio to 0.5:1, or reduce the calculated dose by 2 units. Any thoughts? My latest HbA1c results from a couple of weeks ago was 42 - pretty good eh? All the best Alan |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / BG REACTIONS Mate. I think your BG diary would make most other DAFNE users weep. All that green, and hardly any red. Are you sure you didn't make it up? :-)Seriously, I would not worry about it. If it becomes a regular occurrence then that is the time to start looking at it. Can I ask what your HbA1c is? Your blood sugars are so close to perfect that I am keen to know. One-off random results are really common. There are so many things that can affect our BGs that it is completely expected that there will be some outliers. And pottering in the garden can drop BGs. Sometimes stress makes them higher, but if you are enjoying your pottering and feeling peacefuk while you do it, then it is perfectly possible for them to drop. I find that having a day time nap is dangerous as I often wake with a hypo. Take care, Warwick. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Need advise Hey Avanella,Your BGs look pretty good, especially since last Monday. To be honest, I can't tell whether your BI is correct or not. To be able to tell, I'd need you to do the following. 1) Eat nothing after dinner until breakfast the next morning. 2) Take a bed-time reading at least three hours after dinner. The problem at the moment is that the bed-time reading is often not recorded, and when it is, you are having carbs and QA with it which makes it impossible to tell whether your BI is accurate or not. Is it possible to do what I have asked? I'd want to see three nights' readings, but they don't have to be on consecutive days. So for example, over the next week, if you followed the above on Thursday, Saturday and Tuesday nights, then I should be able to tell. It would also be helpful if you didn't change your BI unless you really need to over the next week. Thanks, Warwick. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Still not too confident 😕 Welcome Joanne80.![]() With ongoing higher Blood Glucose results you may have an infection of some sort. Were your BGs good last week? If not, you may well need increase your BI to help control the situation. Please remember though that BI changes can take days to have any impact. I know you are concerned at the moment and want quick improvement, but you must accept that your body takes time to adjust to a changed BI. I'm on Lantus BI and it always takes me 3 days to see any real change in BGs. We are all physiologically different, but this rule seems to hold true for the vast majority of us. May be a little different when you use another BI however. So my advice is take it slowly, look at your results and analyse them. Try to think about how much exercise you get each day and note that in your diary too. In a few days you may see the BI kick in but try to be cautious. None of the BG results listed in your diary are too dire. Don't worry. You will get back on track in a few days. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Important DAFNE question 1) I'm not aware that my HCP uses DAFNE online.2) I rarely see any responses from HCPs. More HCP involvement would certainly be welcome. I have just scanned the first ten topics in the 'Questions for HCPs' forum and I haven't seen any HCP responses. It's a good job we have some very smart Graduate contributors, like Warwick, Novorapidboi and a few others, who offer sound advice to lots of questions. 3) I don't have a smart phone, so APPs don't APPeal to me. |

Topic: General Discussion / Important DAFNE question 1 - As far as I am aware, none of the HCP's from where I did my Dafne course are online or use this site - As another poster here said, I suspect that this is due to fears of patient confidentiality - unfortunately for the NHS (UK based) the world has moved on from the way things were done in the 1950's and it is about time they caught up. It may also be due to fears that if a HCP gives some advice, then they may be sued for giving out wrong advice, or it conflicts with other advice given by HCP's from other parts of the UK (with more or less money in the pot), or indeed other HCP's from other parts of the world - as other countries do things slightly differently. However, I have now moved to a different part of the UK, and am no longer in touch with those HCP's - However, my current GP surgery - Berks - is so backward and refusing to join the modern world, I would be surprised they even knew of this site (actually I know they do, as they promote Dafne, but refuse to consider pumps, let alone modern pumps with CGM, and they hate it when I say all my results are online, I can share them with you)2 - Yes I would like much more HCP participation - most of us are capable and adult enough to read on here - and elsewhere on the web and work out whether a particular scenario applies to us or not - and if the patient is seeking and asking for advice - on a semi public forum, then by doing so surely the patient themselves have said - look here is my problem, I don't mind that others can read - I want them to read, as I value the advice that may come back. 3 - I use the carbsandcals app, as well as this one, and belong to a FB group - and whilst I don't contribute much on the FB of here, I do read the forums on here - and take what I need. Sorry to waffle on, many thanks, keep up the good work. |
