Topic: General Discussion / High in the morning

Thanks Stew for your reply. For few nights I did what you suggested, last night for example around 1:30 am my BG was 4.7 and I had 0.5 CP. This morning I was 12 and I had 1.5 correction of QA and three hours later I was 17 even though I had no CPs at all. But will keep checking for the next few days and decide if I need to increase my night BI. Very Happy

I think you might need a bit more information, especially a "during night" check or two. This will show whether your overnight BGs are on a steady climb or, perhaps, shoot up through a dawn phenomenon. Once you're clear about that, you're in a better position to decide whether it's a BI issue. Good luck!

Topic: General Discussion / High in the morning

Hi,

I can't find any explanation for my high levels in the morning (between 12 to 16), as my BG's levels before bed are within the targets (between 5 and 7). Any ideas?? Do I need to increase my night BI??

Thanks

Topic: Questions ? / Dawn Phenomenon

Hi Tommo,

If it is dawn phenomenon, then you would expect to see a reasonably normal BG reading at 3 am followed by a spike later in the morning. The fact that it is already so high at 3 am indicates that you could increase your basal insulin to drop the BGs over the whole night and that it may not be DP, but just basal insulin that needs increasing.

It would be worth doing a couple more 3 am checks as it could just be that it was a one-off high.

Keep us posted.
Warwick.

Topic: Questions ? / The 2 hour check

I thought my explanation, which came right before your response, explained good reasons for it...

Its useless for dose adjustment but it can help with dose timing when trying to reduce the mid meal spike to as low as possible...

Topic: Questions ? / The 2 hour check

There's no point in doing a 2 hour blood glucose check because you need to leave at least 4 hours between QA injections so whats the point with the exception of background insulin injections

I've lost 1.5 kilos by eating less and doing 30 minutes exercise - every day. This works for me.

What is your blood sugar at 3am. If that is fine it probably is dawn phenomenon

Thanks for your reply and help. My last 3.00 am test was 16.3 and this was after I had increased my insulatard by 10% from 4 to 4 1/2. It was 16.3 when I woke up at 6.00 but by 6.45 had increased to 19.0. I'm now getting very worried by this and hope to see my DAFNE Educator at the 'drop-in' clinic tomorrow.
Thanks again

Topic: Questions ? / Dawn Phenomenon

Hi Warwick. I adjusted my insulin by 10% last night, when my reading was 10.9. I also took a 3.00 am reading - 16.3. It was the same when I woke up at 6.00 but by 6.45 it had risen to 19.0! I daren't increase by too much as I only take 4 units of insulatard so it was 4 1/2 last night. I used to be on 5 units but my DAFNE Educator suggested reducuing to 4 because I was getting massive hypos of 1.7 and 1.8 (ironically whilst I was on my DAFNE course!) I am now getting worried so hope to see someone at our drop-in clinic tomorrow. Thanks for you help and advice.

Hows your hba1c, have you done dafne yet it helps I would quit the diet pills sounds like they are not working for you, you should speak to a dietician at your diabetic clinic and looking at increasing your exercise, it doesn't need to be much try swimming because the water will support your weight or try a run/walk training schedule, try Parkrun its inclusive to all so anyone can give it a try, you dont have to run to start you could try walking to start but remember to adjust your insulin to start any exercise

Topic: General Discussion / Non Diabetics

Hi Helen,

Yes all my colleagues know that I am diabetic and they know that when I am low I need to go and treat my low, but for most of them I still need to explain the best treatments for hypos.

HI Alan,

I don't think the food causes type one diabetic, I think it is more effecting type two.

Topic: Questions ? / Forgot BI today

Hi, I would do what you have done. Your BG will obviously go higher but it won't cause any long term damage and better to be high for a day than have a serious hypo by trying to do a BI injection now. We all forget injections from time to time, I forgot my BI earlier but fortunately it was only for 30mins. I have forgot QA doses in the past, just have to spend time getting my BG back under control when that happens.

Topic: Questions ? / Forgot BI today

Question Hi

I just found out that I hadn't taken my Lantus insulin this morning. I take it once a day, first thing. I expected my BG to be under 7.0 when I tested earlier but found it was 12.1. The only reason I could think of was the BI and I checked my pen lid that informed me it was 33.50mins since my last BI injection. I am nervous about taking any BI dose now (7.45pm) as it's effects will run into the next day. I have corrected my BG by adding 2units to a recent QA injection before a meal and can continue to do this before bedtime.

Any advice or suggestions?

Many thanks

Dinah

Hi, also a secondary teacher. After a particularly stressful morning and an extra playground duty I realised I was going low and sent my nerdiest kid to the canteen to get an ANZAC biscuit (very sweet...great for hypos) only to have her come back with an admonition from the canteen convener saying I was not allowed to have one as I was a diabetic. Second message to the office..."get me an ANZAC biscuit or an ambulance". Problem solved.

Does everyone know your diabetic? Its normal for most colleagues to have an idea, but the dinner lady?...seems strange.... Very Happy

Hi Tommo,

Very likely DP. Hot weather usually (but not always) leads to faster processing of insulin, leading to hypos so it probably isn't that, although there are always exceptions.

You could try increasing you basal insulin to compensate, but you do need to be careful of overnight hypos earlier in the night if you do that. Follow the DAFNE golden rules and only increase by 10%, or one to two units and monitor for a few days before increasing further.

I was diagnosed at the age of 24 - a year after I got married (51 years ago). I found out a few years later, that my parents thought my diabetes was the result of my wife's cooking!

Topic: Questions ? / Dawn Phenomenon

All this week my blood readings before breakfast, which is shortly after I wake up, have been ranging from 14.8 to 16.5 Is this the so-called Dawn Phenomenon or is it down to the very hot weather. Normally I wake to readings of 4.5 to 8.9. It is worrying but more to my wife than to me at present. My night time insulin is 4 units of Insulatard. I should be grateful for any advise anyone can offer please.

Topic: General Discussion / Blood glucose animation using protective lancet caps

Hi Marke,

I kept having those lancet caps left rolling around & wondered if they could be put to work in some way.

Where did I find the time? I'm doing an MA in Drawing on the application of drawing for communication of scientific & medical concepts, particularly around diabetes. The animation took a little over a week to do & I am now going to remake an improved, hopefully smoother version. . .

Thanks for your help,

Gareth
