Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter)

yep, my last delivery was delayed and so I ended up going to Tenerife without a sensor - exactly the time it would've been most useful!!

They really need to get this sorted

The new meter called Libre Freestyle
Beats most other meters by a mile
But Abbott hadn't planned
For the enormous demand
So if you want one you'll wait quite a while.

hi alturn,

thanks for your reply, the daffe site works fine in IE but I'm not a fan of IE. It is just annoying, but never mind not to worry.

Topic: General Discussion / Helpful info for when you run out of insulin On a Sunday!

Hi all,

Just thought I'd share my experience after running out of Levemir late on a Saturday Night Rolling Eyes

I had 1 cartridge of Levemir in the fridge and a small amount in my pen on Saturday night and then just before bed as always I do my test followed by BI and any corrections required..... Got my Levemir pen and wound it to what should have been 6 units but only went to 4, never mind I'll get my last one out of the fridge and warmed it up and then put on the side ready to swap it over, removed old cartridge and put down then went to pick up the new cartrdige but in my sleepy state managed to knock it on the floor where it spectacularly exploded DOH! Anyway my wife went into panic mode bless her and rang the walk in center who informed her to ring 111, after speaking to someone for some time she was told someone would ring back within 2 hours (It's now Tuesday and still not received a call) anyway I put my old cartridge in and injected the 4 units instead of 6 and suggested we both go to bed to which my good lady said she wanted to stay up....

Woke up the following morning did my test (which was a little higher than normal) and did some searching to see if anyone else had run out of Levemir or another BI and couldn't find anything apart from people who had run out of QA insulin and the advice ranged from going to A&E or a walk in center or to a chemist so I thought I'd search for the nearest one that was open which turned out to be Ashby Tesco's Shocked

All I can say is that the staff at the Chemist in Ashby Tesco's were absolutely fantastic, they assured me they would sort me out and kept checking that I was ok.... 20 mins later (after doing some shopping) they gave me a spare cartrdige of Levemir (Be warned though it is at the discretion of the Pharmacist as to whether they charge you or not, on this occasion I didn't get charged) Razz

The main thing to remember is don't panic, I know how frightening it can be to know you are out of Insulin when you think there is no chance of getting any but it's good to know the options Wink

Topic: Site Development / Problems with Mozilla Firefox

I also use Firefox and DAFNE has been Ok ... but it sounds like a similar problem I've had with Argos site recently (other sites like BBC were fine), but Argos was Ok today when tried. My Firefox was updated recently, and was wondering if that was related. I don't remember having this problem before. My sister gets it frequently, she thinks it's related to their router/connection/ISP - very difficult to tell.

Could you try another browser?

Sorry can't help any further.

Topic: Site Development / Problems with Mozilla Firefox

Hi,
I have been having problems with Firefox. When adding a diary entry I get a message informing me the connection was reset and a buttton to try again. In the past it would load the page when I try again but now it just shows the message connection was reset.again. Don't know if it's anything in Firefoxs settins.
Can anyone help.

Regards
Derek

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Help!

Hi Leigh,

This may not be what you are looking for, but, I have been on Metformin since 12/12/14. It has not been a happy relationship. I started on 1 x 500mg and this seemed to have no effect on my insulin demand. To address the insulin resistance this was raised to 1000mg/day and after a couple of weeks my insulin demand had gone down about 5%. Buoyed by this the Metformin was increased to 1500mg/day. My belly did not like it but I persisted with the 1500mg. My insulin demand further dropped (after some time) to a total of about 8-10%. Then about a month ago faced with visitors I decided I could not live happily with the discomfort (and bowel problems) and I reduced the Metformin to 500mg/day (original dose). It has taken about 3 weeks for my insulin demand to climb back to close to my original demand but the belly issues have resolved. I see my endocrinologist at the end of September and am thinking I will go off the Metformin as I do not believe the reduction in insulin is worth it. (8u/day!)

Bottom line is I did not experience instant results so maybe you ought to keep great records and when your DSN comes back dazzle them with the data.

Hang in there. Helen

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Restaurants - Nutritional Information

Hi, the link above doesn't seem to be working for me. Any chance you could direct me to how I can find it on the uclh website please?

Hi there, the link still works fine for me. But to get to it from the UCLH homepage you click on Our Services - Children and young people's endocrinology - Diabetes - Understanding Nutrition (under the heading "Wellbeing") - Restaurants and food outlets with carbohydrate counted menus. Hope you can find it.

(P.S. Rather than putting the link on the Carb Links part of DAFNE, I decided to go through the list and put in each restaurant/outlet individually.)

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Help!

I have recently changed to Levemir and am taking huge does with very little/no effect - 36 in the morning and 38 in the evening. I am taking maximum ratio doses and correct, does are not having any effect either. I have just been given metformin in the last few days to try and combat insulin resistance but so far no changes have occurred.

My DSN has just gone on holiday but has said that another thing that we could think about is going back to DAFNE basics with my insulin doses and reducing these down to see if that actually has an effect on your BGLs as your BGLs are still raised despite increasing doses. I'm not sure why this is a suggestion as surely that would just push my bs up even higher? I'd be grateful for any explanation you can give.

I'm totally frustrated !

Thanks

Leigh

The advice on my course is to have some sort of carbs with each meal and dose accordingly, and may I remind that high fibre carbs are good for your bowels.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Corn on the cob

Because Corn on the Cob is fairly high in fibre I reduce my dose from my standard ratio. I think I add 1 or 2 units then see what it looks like 2 hours after eating, also depends on what was eaten with the corn.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Low GI bread

Hi Joan29
Low GI does not necessarily mean low carbs so you need to check. Low GI usually means a more complex type of carbs that take longer to digest sometimes because of a higher fibre content. Without looking at packet, eg if eating out, my standard is bread is 40% carbs by weight, therefore if you can weight the bread then times 40% to give you the carb content you will be pretty close. Carbs are carbs whichever way you look at it.
Cheers
David

Doesn't look like it's just you. If I remember, I input two entries today using multiple section and they also show as an hour early, others are Ok, didn't check the times till read Stew B's post.

As a work round, add an hour to the input time Idea

Topic: Site Development / Diary changes

Hi, I've just noticed that when I enter the times of injections (using the 24 hr notation) for multiple entries, they end up showing in the diary as I hour earlier than I entered (e.g. I entered 2219 for my bedtime entry this evening, but it showed in the diary as 2119) I can correct entries individually using the edit function for single entries, but this is a real problem as I tend to enter several days at a time. Is it just me, or is there a glitch somewhere?

Topic: General Discussion / Freestyle Libre

Having been travelling for the past year and missing a lot of news, I only found out about the Freestyle Libre a couple of weeks ago. I tried to buy one but they are not available except to existing customers, and the waiting list seems to be over 6 months now. I would (almost) kill for one of these, as my control is a nightmare. Is anyone else in the queue for one?
