Topic: General Discussion / Diabetic jokes

These are all quite lame or am I just a bit disturbed....

My favourite that I ever heard was..

Taking a diabetic into a sweetshop is like taking an alcoholic into an off licence, so much to choose so much regret.....

Topic: General Discussion / Uploading DANE data

Hi there,

I am currently trialling entering my BG readings into the iPhone DAFNE app rather than in my paper diary. I just wondered if I continue to do this will I be able to show my dietician/nurse/specialist at some point in the future? Is there a way to upload these readings so I can then email them or even print them out?

Thanks

Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter)

Hi yes I think it is a pain I have taken to having a few days off when my sensor ends and try a order straight away when I can . I really miss the swimming so it nice to have a swim sensor free as I have no success with keeping them fully attached after swimming and also after a heavy gym workout. I have found that if I use tac wipe before applying the señor they are no likely to stay on the 14days. Hope you get your order soon as I really miss not having mine on now .

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Pregnancy advice

Hi there,

I'm after any advice from Type 1's who have been or are currently pregnant. Are there any things you think I should keep in mind or be aware of? I am working really hard to keep my sugars within target and to get my next HBA1C lower. I'm starting now, so if all goes well, my partner and I will be able to start trying early 2016. My HBA1C is currently 58 and I have heard that an HBA!C of 49-52 is ideal. I've had diabetes for 21 years and am on Novorapid and Levemir injections. Although I have put off going on a pump for sometime I would consider it for the benefit of myself through pregnancy and of course a baby.

Also are there relevant books out there published in the UK? I've found a few online but they are either American or aimed at medical professionals.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Topic: General Discussion / Helpful info for when you run out of insulin On a Sunday!

Hi BeccyB/Alturn, I agree always going to the same Chemist is best and I always use the same one Wink

I've changed the heading now as this was on a Saturday Night/Sunday Morning and unfortunately my normal Chemist wasn't open so I went for the nearest one which I thought may have the best chance of having my insulin plus I had to do some shopping at Tesco's anyway Laughing

Topic: Site Development / Updated Forum Items

Whenever a new entry was made within a forum item, a green flag would appear in the PC list and it helped me to quickly catch up.
Once reviewed the marker disappeared.
It now seems that each time I open up the forums after a disconnect, the flags reappear even though I have reviewed the item.
I realise that I can review by time posted but I did find the previous marking method very helpful.
Would you have a look please Simon/Marke.

Topic: Questions for HCPs / No QA Insulin with me....

I have forgotten my pen before and not noticed until I got to work.

I have a chemist near by who has helped me out on more than one occasion. They give you a pen at the charge of £20. Then when you have a prescription take it to the same chemist who will give you your £20 back and remove a pen from the 5 pack you get on prescription.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Fruit juice V fruit

I got the impression that fruit (unjuiced) was better than juice, due to tendency to drink more juice (so probably contains more CPs), and it lacks fibre in whole fruit which might contribute to feeling sated. But probably still better than commercial juices. But I like unsweetened stewed rhubarb so my tastes may be a bit odd Question

Would it help to carry a copy of your prescription along with all the other stuff when you are away from normal chemist?

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Eating in Japan - any tips?

I'm off to Japan in a few weeks and have not found many Japanese foods with carb values listed .I know that the standard Japanese rice is low GI and that sushi contains added sugars so I would allow 1CP for each piece. Noodles would be my "safe "option as I think the portions equate to pasta and they are serve with clear soup and vegetables. Is there anyone out there who has any information or links to suitable sites?
Cheers

I would add up all the carbs in the fruit you are juicing -weigh rather than estimate - and make a note of the total for later reference. Juice everything and measure the weight of the juice. It will be far less than you'd expect. The weight in grammes will be the volume in millilitres .
To work out the CP: Divide total carbs by the weight/volume and multiply by 100.The figure you have is the carbs per 100ml/g. Divide by 10 for CP
Most juices are about 1CP per 100ml but smoothies with bananas and mango will be higher.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Corn on the cob

I eat loads of corn on the cob straight off the plants at this time of year. They are so sweet tasting that it is counterintuitive to ignore their theoretical carb content but that's what I do .I've not noticed a rise in BG later - but will monitor this and post any observations.

I always use the same pharmacy so the staff know me and will trust me to get a prescription to them in the next day or so if I need supplies in an emergency. It's handy if the pharmacist knows you're diabetic if you go for over the counter remedies too as he'll point out anything I need to be aware of. I think it's well worth the trip to the local chemist rather than using the supermarket pharmacy (although obviously Ashby Tesco's were fab!)

The new meter called Libre Freestyle
Beats most other meters by a mile
But Abbott hadn't planned
For the enormous demand
So if you want one you'll wait quite a while.

Topic: General Discussion / Helpful info for when you run out of insulin On a Sunday!

Hi all,

Just thought I'd share my experience after running out of Levemir late on a Saturday Night Rolling Eyes

I had 1 cartridge of Levemir in the fridge and a small amount in my pen on Saturday night and then just before bed as always I do my test followed by BI and any corrections required..... Got my Levemir pen and wound it to what should have been 6 units but only went to 4, never mind I'll get my last one out of the fridge and warmed it up and then put on the side ready to swap it over, removed old cartridge and put down then went to pick up the new cartrdige but in my sleepy state managed to knock it on the floor where it spectacularly exploded DOH! Anyway my wife went into panic mode bless her and rang the walk in center who informed her to ring 111, after speaking to someone for some time she was told someone would ring back within 2 hours (It's now Tuesday and still not received a call) anyway I put my old cartridge in and injected the 4 units instead of 6 and suggested we both go to bed to which my good lady said she wanted to stay up....

Woke up the following morning did my test (which was a little higher than normal) and did some searching to see if anyone else had run out of Levemir or another BI and couldn't find anything apart from people who had run out of QA insulin and the advice ranged from going to A&E or a walk in center or to a chemist so I thought I'd search for the nearest one that was open which turned out to be Ashby Tesco's Shocked

All I can say is that the staff at the Chemist in Ashby Tesco's were absolutely fantastic, they assured me they would sort me out and kept checking that I was ok.... 20 mins later (after doing some shopping) they gave me a spare cartrdige of Levemir (Be warned though it is at the discretion of the Pharmacist as to whether they charge you or not, on this occasion I didn't get charged) Razz

The main thing to remember is don't panic, I know how frightening it can be to know you are out of Insulin when you think there is no chance of getting any but it's good to know the options Wink

Topic: Site Development / Problems with Mozilla Firefox

I also use Firefox and DAFNE has been Ok ... but it sounds like a similar problem I've had with Argos site recently (other sites like BBC were fine), but Argos was Ok today when tried. My Firefox was updated recently, and was wondering if that was related. I don't remember having this problem before. My sister gets it frequently, she thinks it's related to their router/connection/ISP - very difficult to tell.

Could you try another browser?

Sorry can't help any further.

Topic: Site Development / Problems with Mozilla Firefox

Hi,
I have been having problems with Firefox. When adding a diary entry I get a message informing me the connection was reset and a buttton to try again. In the past it would load the page when I try again but now it just shows the message connection was reset.again. Don't know if it's anything in Firefoxs settins.
Can anyone help.

Regards
Derek
