Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE and Insulin Pumps.

All education is worth it in my opinion, but for a pump veteran like yourself, no, I cant see what information they could give you that would be new and useful..........

your already making your own adjustments to dose with a pump orientated approach to the DAFNE principles probably..........

can you think of anything.......?

Topic: General Discussion / Low Carb

I've recently lost my hypo awareness. I only found this out after wearing a CGM and sleeping through multiple hypos that my CGM picked up. It is probably safer to take a small amount of carbs, and then look at reducing your basal to avoid the situation happening too often. Obviously you don't want to add a lot of carbs back in if you can help it, but losing hypo awareness is a major pain right now.

Topic: General Discussion / No insulin for 2 months

I called yesterday to my surgery. I was told to phone in the eve.
I called today and the nurse told me that my insulin was ready.
Once there, I got the precription.
I was under the impression that were insulin pens.
I got frustrated because I was not felling well. I had a stomachache, my hips were in pain and lower back was giving me a hard time.
I thought should make an effort, is just 5 minutes away walking and did not have any for 2 months.
By the time I've returned realize there was only 1 type of insulin in the prescription.
I called again, told to come back to get the second item.
If I am lucky, will inject before the end of the week.
I have the prescription to go to any chemist, but We all know they keep a low supply.
Next Friday it will be 3 weeks since I had the test at hospital, why that it takes so long to get these results?
The GP will phone to tell me, at least I do not have to make an appointment.
In the meantime they are offered hundreds of pounds bonuses to stop refering patients to hospital. Just for doing their jobs, what a joke!

Topic: General Discussion / No insulin for 2 months

I have taken a fasting test more 2 weeks ago at Basildon Hospital.the nurse will not tell me the results because she is not qualified. Do really need to see the GP just to tell me my sugar levels are high or low. Have of the time they look on the Internet because they now very little on the subject.
The way I see it, they have lost the results as they have done in the past and will have to go back to hospital for another test.
I work really hard to see the day when my sugar levels are stable. Do I really deserve to be left in the dark due to incompetence?

You urgently need to escalate this, Dyonisus, your blood-sugars must be sky-high - are you able to test or is that denied to you as well? Contact the Basildon Health Trust, or whatever they're called. You need to get this sorted ASAP.
You could also contact Diabetes UK on 0345 123 2399 - they might take this up with the health authority involved.

Thanks to Boots and Gore surgery in Basildon I have not been able to inject for 2 months.
When they provide the pen needles they say I can not get the pens, and vice versa!
All I get is excuses from both parties.
They will not give a box that cost £20 (£8.00on Ebay), just to risk costly complications that could be easy avoidable if people did their jobs correctly
God help them if I have to be rushed to hospital!

Topic: General Discussion / Dosage auto-calculation in apps

Hi Simon & Marke,

Very disappointed that you have had to remove the Dosage auto-calculation from the DAFNE App. I found this feature very helpful in stopping my calculation mistakes. Evil or Very Mad
We will be told we can only have straight Bananas next...Oh yes they did that already.
I still think your app is awesome but wish I had not updated and lost this feature.
Could a stand alone calculator be developed and used? Just a thought.
Please don't let the negative comments get you down, you are greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Pat.

Topic: General Discussion / Diagnosed just over a year ago

Hi Paul, Welcome to the forum Smile

It is a lot to try and get your head around but it does get easier especially after you have done the DAFNE course which I'm assuming you'll be invited to one in the near future and it will give you hope but above all it'll give you control Wink

I've been diagnosed 3 years now and the first year was a bit weird as I had the honeymoon period for a while where my numbers were perfect and I thought "This is easy" then all of a sudden my numbers were all over the place and at that point I realised how difficult it was going to be Sad Now I'm 3 years into diagnoses I realise that my numbers may not be perfect for the whole day but I have the ability to adjust so if I wake up on a 9 or 10 I don't get down about it as there is nothing I can do about my numbers when I'm asleep so I just correct and try to keep my numbers good right up to bed time Very Happy

Just remember you're not alone out there and you have a forum full of people to ask questions and discuss things Wink

PS As soon as you get the opportunity to go on the DAFNE course then do it, it will seriously change your life and your outlook!

Cheers

Mick

Topic: General Discussion / Low Carb

Yet another low carb question, I haven't lost my hypo signals (yet), I know when I'm running low, don't get them until about 3.5 now, if I'm exercising I need to eat, nothing I can about it (just can't keep going), but often since low carbing if I give it a bit of time before eating my body kicks in and I go up or I will have some nuts or cheese rather than sugar.

Is it wise to leave it like this (I eat if I'm driving or something, but at my desk I'll have a few nuts)? If I do have sugar I'm on an up / down rollercoaster for most of the day then!

I feel so much better running lower like this, but now I have the concern of loosing my hypo signals, they are already not happening til I'm lower!

Is there an easy answer? Can't win, its a battle everyday!

Hello my name is Paul. I was diagnosed in September 2014. I have been struggling to get my head around this illness and I suppose I'm looking to chat with people who have had similar experiences/

Congratulations Phil. That is excellent. And well done on the HbA1c. Awesome number. There is nothing wrong with a safety net of gels. Whatever works best for you. I carry jelly beans with me. I'd use gels but I find them too sticky and sweet and inconvenient with the packaging to deal with afterwards. They do work fast though :-) Keep it up. Sounds like you are doing great.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Fruit juice V fruit

my old Dafne carbohydrate portion book gives a value of 1glas 160ml = 1.5 portions cho for fruit juice. I have a bottle each week from my milkman and always apply this value to it. Seems to work ok.

Topic: General Discussion / Low Carb

Hi all,

I think I am finally about there, 100+ miles on the bike yesterday, scrambled eggs in butter before hand, pub lunch, Sausage in onion gravy, with chips (I had about 5 or 6 to mop up gravy). Pockets full of gels, but didn't need one. HbA1c down from 12 (old skool) 2 years ago to 6.8 Very Happy

Still too nervous to go out for any distance without a pocket full of gels though, what do other low carbers have if they do go hypo? Are there any other low carbers that are exercise nuts like me?

Phil

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE and Insulin Pumps.

Hi To Everyone,
I did DAFNE about 7yrs ago and for the past 5yrs I've been using a Insulin Pump with very few problems and quite good results. However, I've now been invited to attend a new DAFNE course especially for pump users.
My problem is, the itineraries for the old and new DAFNE courses look the same, and I'm not sure I want waste time attending if I'm not going to learn anything new. They've also made it very clear that this course has a waiting list, and, it costs a £1,000 a patient.

I'd like to know, has anyone heard of this NEW DAFNE COURSE FOR PUMP USERS and if so, is it worthwhile attending or just a waste of time?

Sorry for rambling before I got to the question.

When using XYLITOL in baking what carbohydrate value should you allow for?. Nowhere does it say what percentage is absorbed.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Fruit juice V fruit

I think that the main problem from a juicer is that it is very easy to drink the juice from say 8 apples, while the odds of you wanting to eat an entire 8 apples in one sitting is extremely low. Therefore, you are more likely to have a large amount of carb in one sitting than you are from their un-juiced form.

I don't think that juiced fruits are higher in CPs than un-juiced ones - it would defy physics for carbs to be added just by using a juicer, but the sugar in them will be more quickly absorbed than from eating fruit in an un-juiced form, so you are likely to see a steeper rise in BGs than you would otherwise.

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Insulin out of the fridge

Agreed. In fact I often have my insulin in the car for a few hours before I get home to the fridge and never had a problem. As far as I know the effectiveness of the insulin drops off gradually rather than suddenly once outside the recommended time limits on being out of the fridge. I must do further research..... hope all is well. Andy

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Insulin out of the fridge

I spoke with the pharmacist today and she told me that if they dispense the prescription in advance of collection, then the insulin is packaged separately and put back in the fridge. If the prescription is for home-delivery, they wait unril the delivery-driver is there then dispense it with the tablets in one bag and it arrives within 45 minutes.

That seems OK to me.

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Morning Bloods climb steadily

Thanks Lucy.

The overview since 7am is started with 8.5, ate 2 carbohydrate exchanges, took 27 units of quick acting insulin across 4 injections and 15 minutes ago came in at 9.7.
That should be enough insulin to kill me!

My problem seems like it is exactly the same as yours. I was thinking of emailing my specialist nurse who took my DAFNE course this afternoon.

It may be the case that i need to increase to a 3:1 ratio as well, but seeing as I have gone from a 1.5 to 2.5 ratio and nothing has really changed I am not too sure if it will help. If she replies with anything useful then I will let you know!
