Topic: Questions for HCPs / INSULIN SENSITIVITY Hi Susanf, Thanks for your reply and encouragement. I am actually TYPE1, and it clearly is late in life to get that!!!When I raise this scenario with the professionals, they accuse me of being in denial. Cool. |

Topic: General Discussion / RESIDUAL INSULIN GENAREATION? I am taking very little insulin. I have 2 units of BG in the am, and 10 units of BG in the evening. I am only taking QA insulin if I have a meal of greater than 5 carb units, and then at a ratio of 0.5 to 1.I only use the insulin I do use since the health professionals put the fear of god into me. My short-term blood glucose is always in single figures, and never more than 8.0. My long -term level is 42, and has been at that level since I was first tested after diagnosis some 4 years ago. I now have a detailed example, which is not untypical of my experience. My morning level was 6.3, and I had a cracker and low fat cottage cheese for breakfast (about 0.5 carbs). I took 2 units of BI. We then walked to the shops, about 2.5 miles, and I could not resist a SUBWAY and coffee (about 4 carb units). I did not take any QA, as experience says I will be ok. We then walked home in 45 mins. (steady). In the afternoon, I had 20 mins. on the exercise bike, and I tested my blood sugar at 4.8. I had a snack oif tortillas to keep me going (1 carb unit) For our evening meal we had roast duck with roast potatoes and mixed veg., and as a treat we tried my wife's home made Christmas cake, which is soaked in booze, with a lump of Wensleydale cheese. Again. I did not take any QA insulin. About 8.30pm I had another 20 mins. on the exercise bike, and when I tested after my blood sugar was 5.4. I find it difficult to believe that 2 units of BG and modest exercise can be responsible for dissipating over 7 units of carb. Anyone got any thoughts. |

Gus. My hunch is your GP is right.. when having hypos I really can't think straight at all. .. even simple stuff gets complicated. Having hypos is bad all around, they can be utterly exhausting and can be dangerous if driving or similar.. The science is simple... Our brains require glucose to function correctly, when our brains are starved of glucose they don't work as they should... there's a fine balance between good control and going too low to often. My advice is to keep your levels up a bit and avoid the hypos. ... hope things improve for you. Andy |

Hi Garry I was invited to the DAFNE course in October. I found out about the forum when I registered for DAFNE online. I thought the course really helped and I have just attended my 6 week review. I'm still struggling at night. I seem to be going through the honeymoon period at the moment. Its reassuring to be able to chat with other diabetics. So thanks for the reply to my original message. |

Topic: General Discussion / I know this is the Express but .... Hi, Sorry but six people is not a study, they can't make any judgements or state side effects if the study was only 6 people !!Interesting, yes, a cure, not really...... |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / concern about effect of hypos Gus. Good advice from Gary and Jim. The symptoms you describe are symptoms I get when my BG is dropping and I'm what DAFNE calls hypo.I do some teaching and I always measure my BG before I do, just to make sure I'm not likely to go hypo. I have in the past also been aggresive when hypo. I also talked to my GP about memory loss who suggested that just becoming older doesn't mean memory loss. Many of my contempories have memory loss that is similar to mine but I do surprise myself sometimes when my brain appears to work better than I have noticed previously. I've stopped worrying about it now. If your BG levels swing as much as mine do you may think about discussing the use of a pump if/when you next go to the diabetes clinic. Best wishes Paul |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / concern about effect of hypos Great advice Jim S.Gus...you must up you blood testing regime to ensure that at all times you are in normal range. I tried for many years to keep my BGs low to avoid perceived long term damage, but suffered far too many associated problems. Stick in the normal 4.5 to 7.5 mmol/l before meals and you will see how over time, things gradually improve. Best Wishes Regards Garry |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Pregnancy advice I changed to a pump in May 2015 after 25 years of pens etc... For what it's worth my HbA1c pre pump start was 53. A recent blood test result showed a reduction in HbA1c to 48 so it certainly has improved the results for me. Good luck with the plans. Andy |

I. Have just completed Dafne Pumpers course. Brilliant and very worthwhile. Been Type 1 for 52 years on mdi but have been On Pump for only 4 months. I have learnt so much on this course and now need to put it into practice. |
