Topic: General Discussion / Dose adjustment due to GI Its important to remember that the carb count and dose should never change, but you can play about with timing etc................for most medium to high GI meals I can find myself taking my injection anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes before eating, this brings the peak of the insulin quite close to the peak of the meal, for slower GI meals the peak will be later on, and much less severe, so an injection closer to the actual mealtime would be more suited, delaying the insulins peak................ Its all trial and error for each individual though as you know, so no real black and white rules as such................ For high fat foods, like pizza etc, there could be a delay in the peak, this can often cause hypos a few hours after eating, then highs nearing the end of the 5 hour insulin duration. This can ususally be dealt with a split dose, so some up front before eating, the rest later on, maybe an hour or two after eating, again, trial and error, everyone is different and some may need a 50/50 split, while others may need more or less up front etc...... so test and record when having these foods and make some decisions on how you react to the foods and when/how to take your insulin............. |

Topic: General Discussion / mood swings and comfort food you just need to get into a good routine to begin with, one that will give you the results you want, you can then start to expiement with different treats and at different time, but slowly though. Eventually you will know your own limits and what balance of carbs/insulin works best for you..............you can literally eat anything.............. the problem with snacking in between meals is the 'stacking' of insulin, and also it buggers up your insulin action. Having an uninterrupted 5 hours if the most ideal situation for us all, and the healthiest................but remember, its OK to treat yourself now and again............ |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / new to insulin pump hi kerryn, welcome to the site..............we do have a few pumpers who use this site, so please return, however you might get a better response over at diabetessupport.co.uk, there are lots of pumpers there, both old and new, and it has its own dedicated pumping section................ its a great place to get familiarised with it all before the big day arrives.......... |

Topic: General Discussion / Night time cycle ride. Thanks ktop10, very interesting and helpful. June 10 is the big day and getting closer by the minute. My background has been reduced dramatically since training began. Only one problem with the pasta thing, I am not at all keen on it. We are working on it though. |

Topic: General Discussion / Night time cycle ride. Hello - Have you done your ride yet? My tip might be too late! I don't do any overnight exercise but do work night shifts sometimes and even though its the same activity as day shifts find I need much much less insulin. Especially towards the early hours of the morning I sometimes have hypos. I normally reduce my background to 70-80%, but doing exercise I imagine you would need to reduce more. Make sure you eat lots of pasta before!! good luck! |

Topic: General Discussion / mood swings and comfort food Hi Krf,It's good that your're trying to sort your sugars out. I love sweet food, and really like baking but it isn't a habit that I can enjoy without the pain of a high sugar and all the symptoms that go with it! DAFNE is Dose adjustment for NORMAL eating, so we should be able to have a treat now and again when the time is right but the reward of having level sugars on days when we don't snack is that you fell 100% better (not thirsty, irritable ect). Keep at it and good luck! |

Topic: General Discussion / Life insurance Hi Sam,I also had problems getting life cover (about 10 years ago!!) and contacted the British Diabetic Association (now Diabetes UK)who made contact with several life insurance providers on my behalf. I took out a joint policy with Friends Provident...., however all the diabetes related medical conditions were omitted from the policy ie blindness, loss of kidney function, heart attack and so on. |

Topic: General Discussion / mood swings and comfort food Hi again, they say a problem shared is a problem halved. Several times today i have come back and read my earlier post and thought what others reading it would think. I realised that I am the only one that can sort this! Today has been an eye opener for me. Hopefully future posts will be less of a moan! Dafne has given me the tools, and it is up to me to use them. ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / mood swings and comfort food Hi there,Is anyone else out there hit by the same problem? I am troubled by comfort eating between meals, and graze without being aware of it. An increase in blood sugars leaves me with more low moods and so the cycle continues. I attended Dafne last October and have had a 3% reduction in A1c since, but need to improve more. I have quite a few diabetic complication so need to get things sorted. Any advice? ![]() |

I don't know the answer, other than my own anecdotal evidence which is in line with what you are saying. Particularly after large meals (big Sunday lunches and curries!) I always seem to be high after. With regard to GI, again, I often muse that should I stagger injections/take more for long lasting carbs. |

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE and Employers [Hi - this is my first posting! I did my course last November 2011, I also work at a school as an LSA, and I had time off as sick leave (paid - which isn't that much) quote=PPS North Stand]HelloThis is my first posting after graduating from DAFNE during the February half-term........there you go February half-term!!!......... working in a school, there is very little likelihood of schools releasing teachers for a DAFNE course as they have to pay for cover (£180 - £200 per day). Hence I and other school based employees HAVE to do it in holiday time. |
