Topic: Questions for HCPs / High Blood Pressure Hi guys,My BP usually hovers around 175/65 but on Feb 1st I was at Monklands Gen. Hosp. for other reasons and my BP was tested as a matter of procedure. It was 234/84. They didn't believe the machine and said it must be a fault as it couldn't be that high. I told them that it had been way over 200 several times in the past few months (I test regularly at home), so they did two more tests over the next half an hour (all at the same level) then told me that it was above the level at which they were obliged to do something, so I was immediately sent to casualty. I sat there for an hour or so then was looked at by a guy who said he didn't know what he was supposed to do with me. He tried to get hold of my medical notes, having noted that I had been sent down from the Diabetes Unit. After a very long wait he gave up on trying to get my notes and asked me what medication I was on. Fortunately I had in my pocket a repeat prescription list which I gave him. Looking at this he said "You shouldn't be taking Meloxicam with Lisinopril! Stop taking the Meloxicam immediately and get your GP to check your BP and put you on a 24 hour BP check". I did all of this, and the hospital sent a letter to my GP confirming all of this. Within 48 hours of stopping my Meloxicam my BP dropped from the 180 -190 it had been at to the 155 - 165 level and has since risen to 165 - 175 most of the time, although it was just over 200 a few days ago. So, look carefully at the leaflets for all the medication you take. Take particular note of the contra-indications! Roger |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Dawn Phenomenon possibility? Here's the past few days results. Thanks for the feedback NB. I did put it up again (20 to 22 eve BI)... I think I've hit at least near a wall now... I didn't hypo, but I came pretty bloody close... however due to the walk I did to go see family, etc, I'm not going to put it back down just yet. (If I'm honest, I'm quite pleased with today's (11/04/12) results in particular... definitely getting there!) My partner and I are going to work a bit harder through this working out period to eat less in a split dose fashion as you suggest... a lot of the time it's stuff like ice cream from a tub but that can easily be a different option (eg, ice cream on a stick)! ![]() Take care. |

Topic: General Discussion / What has gone wrong with Lantus adjustments Hi AneleI do worry about the injection sites but I think they are ok. I am having the Lantus in the left thigh and the novarapid in the right thigh. I do try to move the injection point but do not always remember where exactly I injected last. With the carb free week there has been less novorapid so hopefully thigh had some rest. I am avoiding belly area because I have a hernia from previous operations and I am waiting for an op for it to be repaired. Not sure what happens after I have the stratus mesh inserted there but for now I am keeping away from the tummy. Strange results are baffling. There is evidence to suggest that higher insulin doses result in higher BG levels, I will start separate thread on this and do some researching first. Might explain why some people need loads of insulin compared to others - the more you inject the body gets moved to higher levels needing more insulin ... may be there are thresholds. Anyway will leave this crazy idea to another thread, |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Accessibility for Blind/ VIP diabetics Hi there,I haven't had this issue with the iPhone app before but tend to use the full site on my Mac or iPad. I have had a quick check in my app and in "Settings" (the bottom right icon) there is an option for Diary Upload. Mine is currently set to OFF, maybe yours is too? If so, changing it to ON, may solve your upload issues? Also,I;m not sure if you've checked this out already but in the DAFNE Online Mobile forum there is a thread about issues with downloading to the app but I'm sure it also talks about uploading. See link: http://www.dafneonline.co.uk/forums/5/topics/1470 Hope this has helped in some way ![]() Cheers, Anele. |

Topic: General Discussion / What has gone wrong with Lantus adjustments Hi Simon,Just a wee thought, how are your injection sites as I see from your results that you more often than not are using the same site (Right Thigh). If you have been using the same site for a while this can also affect the absorption rates of your QA hence rotating sites seems to help with this. Just a thought as it may also help explain some of your results? Cheers, Anele. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / High Blood Pressure I also have high blood pressure, 140/90, sometime slightly over. No one has told me why, but I can assume its my weight. For you it may be done to diet..........there may be some things your consuming that are contributing, I would try and do some research on the food you eat and the quantities.......However, there can be other reasons for high BP that are genetic/hereditary etc...... Sorry, not much help......... |

Topic: General Discussion / raised blood sugar after hypo. Still learning. I am more than ok with hypo treatments. Oj is my prefered choice. To clarify more; when I have 1 cp's of o.j. my blood rebounds. When I am under 4.5 and have o.j. my BG returns to normal. My issue is when I go beyond 4.5. Under 2 or 1. If I have a BG of 0.8, (rarely) I correct with 1 or 2 cp's of oj. However, I find myself within 2 hrs having a yo yo effect thus ending up high.It is this high I wish to battle. Should I just leave it? I am learning to give some corrective QA insulin before I go high at other times of the day. It is a bit scary having a normal BG and giving QA. I still havent got the hang of it fully. Because I eat very little carbs and follow patterns in my diary I can predict when this is going to happen. In the past i've have tried increasing my BI to deal with the bulk of the highs but this has the effect of making me lower at other times. Thanks for your input everyone. |

Topic: General Discussion / raised blood sugar after hypo. Someone once said; 'physician heal thy self' and (ignoring uninitiated scorn) that is where to start. Although all the well known antidotes work they are different just like us, I would suggest trying a handy size (330ml) tin of Pepsi or Coca Cola (non-diet of course) = 1.5 CPs.Lucozade is not to my taste and Glucose tablets, like most solids, take a little longer to get to to where its needed, plus with BG reading minus 3 not everyone is in the mood to count tablets, although they are a boon when travelling. The faster something puts BG up the faster it falls but followed by plain digestive biscuit(s) (1 CP each), or similar can avoid sharp peaks and troughs that can happen if a Hypo is over or under compensated. ps. Dermot if you read this thanks for the tip, like you it works for me, having a 'six-pack' in the fridge has taken on a whole new meaning. |

Topic: General Discussion / What has gone wrong with Lantus adjustments Thanks James for all the advice. Noticed an error in the time for the measurement during the evening meal of the 8th April. Corrected now. I will tackle evening BI testing separately from the morning one. I wonder when Saofi will admit that Lantus is not a 1-dose 24 hour insulin !!! |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / High Blood Pressure Hi guys,To add to my previous post about the hypos I've just been told I have high blood pressure (155/60) I don't smoke or drink, I exercise a lot (gym, football, squash, taekwondo), I'm vegetarian (I eat a good amount of fruit and veg although I could eat more veg) My weight is ok for my height..I'm 11 stone and 5 ft 8 I was also diagnosed with pre-proliferative retionpathy in my left eye last year but since it's been ok (I'm due for my nbext check up next week, hopefully I won't need anymore laser surgery..although this obviously doesn't mean it's getting better) What could be the cause of the high blood pressure? The doctor gave me little to no explanation and just sent me away with a prescription for lisinopryl (as far as I know this is for diabetic patients with high blood pressure) What do you think? |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Accessibility for Blind/ VIP diabetics Who makes this pump?I don't see why you cant get it, unless it was significantly more expensive then the rest [pump and consumables].........but even then it should still be considered/investigated....... Make sure your connected to a wireless router at home or elsewhere when uploading, you might be more successful, however I do know ppl have been having problems....... |

Topic: General Discussion / raised blood sugar after hypo.
Remember, for ANY BG <3.5mmol/l you MUST treat with 1.5 - 2 CPs rapid acting carbs, which should be sufficient to get your BG back into a safe target range without making you too high. Although your body will generate a hormonal response to a falling BG, when you have had diabetes for many years you will have very little glucagon production and adrenaline is usually not sufficient to counteract your injected insulin. So please do not rely on your 'liver kicking in' ... it's simply not safe and can lead to severe hypos and hypo unawareness. If your BG is a little high after a hypo that you've only treated with max 2 CPs, there may have been a little glycogen release from the liver, but this can usually settle down in the following hours, which is why we stress in DAFNE NOT to correct a raised BG follwing a hypo, or you risk just going hypo again. Quick reminder: 100ml Lucozade = 1.5 CPs 200ml orange juice = 2 CPS 4 jelly babies = 2 CPS 5 Lucozade tablets = 1.5 CPs 5 'GlucoTabs' = 2 CPs Carolin |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Accessibility for Blind/ VIP diabetics I finally gave in and bought an iphone. Coss me an arm and a leg, most of my savings gone but I am now using DAFNE ap on it to record my sugars and it has the carb counter on it too. I can download my results ok from the computer to iphone but am havng trouble getting it to upload from my iphone to computer. so some of my results are stuck on my iphone ap. other than that it is a great job. I can use my iphone with the voice over fine, all seems to work great. I haven't used any other carb counting aps as i'm not sure which are accessible and don't want to fork out more money for something that might not work. and like I said above, the online DAFNE carb counter is limited.I was told recently that there is a talking pump coming on the market in 2015? but when I mentioned this to my hospital I was told that they didn't deal with the company who made them. So after all that hope and research I'm maybe not going to get the chance of getting one? Grrr! I'm sure i'm not the only blind or visually impaired person pi**ed off at this. After years of hearing about other people being given pumps and being told I couldn't use one because i'm blind I had got kind of excited when I heard about this new talking one, now my hopes seem to be dashed again. I probably should be posting this on another topic but hope to hear from other blind and VIP type 1's on here. |

Topic: General Discussion / What has gone wrong with Lantus adjustments One of the many benefits of Levemir, however not everyone gets on with it I suppose...........When you corrected your 9.3 with 1 unit that should of been sufficient, however you forgot about the possibility of your AM BI dose running low/out by the time 19.29 came..... Remember you only have to do carb free for the night time testing, once your confident the dose is right, then move on to daytime basal testing with no carbs..............you may be fine with having low/no carbs, but I know I wouldn't be, I would definitely be producing ketones.....just as long as you know you don't need to be so strict on yourself. I realize getting a clear a picture as possible is important though..... you might be sensitive to insulin, so don't take my word as gospel................its just seems from the results that the corrections are not enough........ Keep up the good work.................. ![]() |

Hi, I wondered how you eventually got on through the week and what adaptations the DAFNE team made for you? What helped? What else is needed? We are continually asked about developing resources for VIP and would really value your feedback. Thanks, Carolin |

Topic: General Discussion / What has gone wrong with Lantus adjustments Thanks James - will stick with 7 and 4. You see I did not want to get to recalibrarting my QA:CP ratios until I got the BI perfectly right -which does mean extending the carb free test period !The 8th March evening meal was over an extended period and I did not know what was going to come next so that is why I split the QA dose for starter and main meal. The 14.3 BG reading at 21:55 was probably due to beetroot soup which had 1 CP which I did not count because thinking it was just a vegetable and also there was probably half an apple in one of the starters so I was 1.5 CPs out in my estimate but I think the beetroot soup was fast acting carbs! Yes I have been doing half unit corrections and that was the reason I thought I needed the Demi pen as I believe I am senstitive to insulin. I could have had 1 QA unit this morning as correction instead of half. But yesterday's lunch time correction of 1 QA unit with BG at 9.3 should have been adequate. This was day 2 with BI @7 in the morning so any delay in the increase in Lantus should have settled down by then. I do not want to introduce CPs yet as that would confuse the matter and make it difficult to establish what the BI should be. The trouble is that any change to BI takes 2-3 days to settle down. [PS had the wrong time in the BG Diary for the BG 14.3, it was 50 minutes after the start of the meal - now corrected as 21:55] |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypos when I wake Hi Kev,Remember, as well as potentially requiring reduced BI overnight, it's also important to 'refuel' after exercise, particularly resistance exercises where your muscles will be re-storing glycogen for several hours afterwards. If you cannot find anough info in your course workbook, try www.runsweet.com for more on the nutrition side of exercise. Good luck! ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / What has gone wrong with Lantus adjustments Pretty good results on the 6 and 4 doses, your holding steady, all be it going slightly higher by the time your evening BI dose is due, but your AM dose may be running out/low by then, so to be expected...........I see your correcting with half units of insulin, you mat feel this is needed, but my opinion is its not........ on the 8th at 21:05 you were 10.8, this should of been corrected with 2 units, if your following the rule 1 units drops 2-3mmol/l.....later that evening wrong carb count as you day messed up those results.....also you split your dose here for whatever reason [high fat content etc...] if it was the high fat content, the glucose release from the food may have continued well into the night and effected the next morning.... Alcohol usually drops the blood sugar by inhibiting the normal functions of the liver, you could of went low, then rebounded, but I don't suspect this in your case, its more likely delayed absorption, or in fact your BI.........you need more basal tests to confirm the 4 dose, it worked 2 days in a row, all be it, without carbs......... I would remain at 7 and 4 and continue testing, the results of your basal testing so far are positive, I think the problem lies with your insulin/carb ratios and your corrections, in that you need that little bit more to get you on target. Bear in mind the higher you are, the less 1 unit will drop you........... |
