I would echo what Simon has said about Frio wallets. Used mine driving across Death Valley in California where the temp was 45 deg C. and the insulin was kept cool enough not to be affected. |

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin Cooling Wallet? Rafa,I'd definitely recommend a Frio wallet - I've used them in hot countries since I was diagnosed and they're great. All you need to do it activate them in water then top up the water every couple of days: http://www.friouk.com/shop.aspx Simon |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / colonscopys
thanks again Helen just a quick note on what I did to prepare for the long CP free period, the longest I've ever been. Read up on BI what to take. I think we all find getting the BI just right is very hard even me with the period of years I've been a type 1. I decided to do a test run I take 33 units of BI lantus once a day Test was no CP or QA after 1pm on day 1 Monday until 3pm Tuesday day 2 total 26hours. my BG was constant between 9.2 10.6 on day 1 I started with a higher BG to avoid Hypos . 5am on Day 2 my BG was 4.2 a drop of 6.4 I stopped here and corrected ( a difference of 6.4 is to great to continue without looking at my BI amount) The way I check was this My BMI weight had always been around 12 stone, I knew weight affects the amount of BI you need so I checked this, Since I started going for a run it had dropped to 11st 6lbs or 73,6 kgs using the calculation that you need a total of 0.5 - 0.8 units of insulin per kilogram of body weight with half for food intake and half is the basal rate. I did some quick sums and found that I should be taking 29.46 units of BI. I reduced the units taken on the Day of the procedure from 33 to 30 and had no issues, in fact I had a BG of 6.8 1hour before I went in, so decided to take 150ml of fresh orange to increase it by 1 CP 3 units of BG. The hospital had asked that I was above 7mmol when the nurse tested me I was 10,3. Dafne really helped on this occasion giving me less stress. hope this helps others. The loss of some weight was the factor that gave me the low BG ,another factor we should take into account when our BG's aren't what we expect. I also checked what if I was my ideal weight which is 9st 8lbs or 62.23 kg which is my target I would need 24.89 or 25 units of BI which matches Dafne 1unit for 1 hour ( seems I need 0.8 ) the top of the scale Brian type 1 42 yrs |

Topic: General Discussion / batteries for the accu-chek I've had a Mobile since launch in the UK and agree with 'size' comments above but I have biggish hands and it is convenient and relatively quick to test with, so I use mainly for testing at home and use an Aviva for other tests. The Mobile works fine 95% of the time but about 1 in 5 of the cassettes seem to fail part way through so I always have spares to hand. Sometimes the problem can be overcome by reinserting cassette , but other times not. Batteries are indeed free and I have found the support service to be good and efficient. See how you go! |

Topic: General Discussion / A bit of escapism - some fun Just for a few minutes taking our minds off the unexplained high's and low's and what the carbs per 100g are for this or that ......Just wondered how a Secretary of State gets DAFNE'd ! Or someone with that position has to miss out. I read reference to two injections a day - Isn't that how it was in the old days. So not only would one miss out on DAFNE - also on new regime of multiple injections for meals. May be the mention of 2 injections a day was just conjecture by a journalist !! I wonder. May be an assistant will get DAFNE'd ! |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / colonscopys Hi everyonethe procedure went very smoothly, I got the all clear :-) I went from Friday 1pm to Saturday 4pm without any QA or any CPs 27hrs, the longest I've ever gone, without Dafne I wouldn't have been able to go this long only used 1 carton of orange on the day to push up my BG from 6.8 to 10mmols. turns out the nurse was a type 1 and was very keen to learn about Dafne since she hadn't been on the course yet. thanks for your comments HelenP Regards Brian type 1 42 yrs |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / insulin pump The others pumps aren't too bulky but I didn't want the limitations of it and tubing for feminine clothing, just glad my consultant listened to me!As for the pregnancy...due to the good control been given go ahead to try for a family as hba1c is well within the pregnancy targets! I am now on tiny amounts of insulin...was on injections ( average of 18/day QA and BI) now average 7/day!! The tiny amounts just can't be done by injections! Good luck with trying to get pump |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / insulin pump Wow Vickyp, I am so pleased to hear of someone getting the Omnipod as I was told it was only available in my area for teenagers. You have shown us that perhaps persistence pays.I was advised on my Dafne course that I would be a prime candidate for a pump as, like you, I am very sensitive to insulin, and am experiencing great difficulty in getting good control. I have hesitated with the excuse that I was getting used to the Dafne regime, but in truth I don't like the idea of housing the bulky pump somewhere on my person, as it doesn't lend itself to feminine clothing. Also, as a yoga teacher I can't work out how I can house it discreetly in my yoga wear. And as for the tubing, well.... Great to hear how well you are doing on the Omnipod. Good luck with the pregnancy |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / insulin pump Still going well on the Omnipod. Been having a few hypos, at specific times of day so ratios etc been altered again! One limitation is that the basal rate only goes as low as 0.05... But I need to have a rate of 0.00 at certain times which can only be done using temp basal rates...so it's up at midnight and 6am every day to switch to temp basal!Consultants very happy..and me too.. Hba1c is at 43 and within the pregnancy target range I have to aim for (am not pregnant tho!) Feel so much better and freer since being on the omnipod...highly recommend it! |

Topic: General Discussion / batteries for the accu-chek Hey Numo,I know what you mean about the Accu Check Mobile. It can be very temperamental about the blood sample. I found it was best just to shove it's nose in my pool of blood and that usually worked. Compared to the amount of blood it needs versus a meter like a Freestyle Lite though, it was like a vampire. However, one of the women on my DAFNE course loves the Mobile and won't try any other meter, so horses for courses I guess. |

Topic: General Discussion / ulcers You may have some kind of infection coming on and that's sending your BGs haywire. We all become insulin resistant when an infection takes hold. You may not have any symptoms yet, but my BGs normally tell me 1 or 2 days before the grot arrives. The mouth ulcer may be indicative of your overall condition....I sound like I should be selling Bob Martin cure all tablets for man's best friend! Regards Garry |
