Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carb Free Foods Howdy,As previously mentioned 4-5 hour slots work best for this. I would recommend doing the same period for a few days on the trot so that you can get one portion of the day sorted then move on to the next, bearing in mind the impact one part of the day will have on the following one. Also doing a ten hour stint will bring on an impact that you may not have thought about. Extended periods of fasting/carb fee will induce a lower need for insulin. If you base your basal rates on this they may not be wholly accurate and those 10 never ending hours of carb cravings will be for nothing. Also at ten hours I personally would be checking for ketones whatever bg readings you are getting because your body may start to break down stores for those missing carbs. Also as mentioned parsnips can def increase your bg. All said, I hope it work out well for you. I found that this was the hardest part of it all when I started out but it is def worth the effort. |

Topic: General Discussion / My BG Diary - All Comments Welcomed Before I was on my pump I used to split my lantus dose. I am allergic to levemir and the lantus used to run out when given in one shot so I had to split it. The really annoying thing about it is this. It can take three days for any changes to start taking effect and another 3 for them to settle down and take full effect. So basically after you make a change you may need to wait six days to see what it's really starting to do and then give it a few more to see how the change is working. The dates you have up would suggest that you changed back on the day after it was probably only taking effect. Now the six day thing may not be true for you but it's what I was told in the hospital and what I found reflected in my readings. Also the time of day that you do the split and the ratio are also important. Mine used to be a 9u/11u split and the time of day made a huge difference. Hope this is of some use. Good luck |

Topic: General Discussion / Higher CP value meal - Should higher than normal QA doses be split? I don't know - i will reserve judgement on this Paul.I do know though that I am very sensitive to small changes in insulin dose - 1u out and there is an impact - so I would never dream of injecting 21u - anyway not with my current insulin sensitivity and to just go to bed without measuring - at the moment I do not risk that - whilst I am still able to stay awake 5 hours after dinner, Maybe when I get older I will not be able to do that but now i can and I am doing it,. By the way the 5 hours went past 2 and half hours ago - i just carried away doing things ! But definitely going to bed now Biggest fear is getting a hypo whilst a sleep so I make sure I am close to 8.0mmol/l before bedtime (for me 7.0 to 8.5 at bed time I take no action for) Obviously I am not benefiting from all the freedoms following DAFNE but what is the point in doing a bedtiime measure when the QA is still working and active, |

Topic: General Discussion / Higher CP value meal - Should higher than normal QA doses be split? I think after reading the above comments it is whatever works for that individual. I have just had my tea which consisted of a frozen pizza and a magnum ice cream. I find that when I eat a pizza I have to increase my ratio from one and a half to one and two thirds because if I don't the next morning I am normally higher than usual.my total q/a dose for the above was 21.5 units of which I took all at once. rightly or wrongly I don't concern myself with my bedtime bg reading because 5 hours have not elapsed by then i.e. if it is to high.it is the breakfast bg reading that I tend to refer to.as we all realise DAFNE is great because it gives us more freedom to eat what we want. for me personally by splitting q/a doses for large cp meals just makes the whole thing a bit more complicated and its not easy to get right at the best of times.K.I.S.S.-KEEP IT SIMPLEY SIMPLE |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / dafne sports camps? That would be nice. I'd love to use a CGM and know my trends, but the consumables are so expensive currently. Perhaps they will come down in price soon. My notes from the course are here if you are interested:http://needcarbs.wordpress.com/2013/03/20/tips-from-act1vate/ Cheers, Warwick. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / dafne sports camps? Warwick thanks so much! Yup - Melbourne's 4 hr. travel time compared to Boulders 18 hours is worth thinking about. will certainly look in to it. we also got to trial CGM's while at camp and they were great! |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / dafne sports camps? Hi Jenny,Closer to you than the USA is Act1vate - http://www.hypoactive.org/content/act1vate-2013 It should run again in March next year somewhere reasonably close to Melbourne, Australia. It runs from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. It it is full of practical information and I found it fantastic and extremely helpful earlier this year. If you subscribe to the email list, you should get details of when the next one happens if you are interested. In March there were about 40 attendees I think and it is very liberating to be surrounded by others all testing and injecting, or dialling up insulin pump doses. Cheers, Warwick. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / dafne sports camps? Just recently I went to this wonderful camp in America (from New Zealand) called campWILD a camp to help athletes who have diabetes manage training and racing in either track, cycling or triathlon. it catered for beginners to very accomplished. it was wonderful! there was a mix of theory and practice. (if I could post photos I would!!!) Have DAFNE ever thought about doing something like this? Have to admit that I have found the DAFNE programme's weakest link is training and racing. e.g. coping with 4am starts; having long races over 3-4 hours; nutrition on long bike rides/swims etc. I wouldn't expect this kind of detail to be part of the general dafne programme but the opportunity to discuss and practice with other diabetics was invaluable - I got so much out of it. |

Mine last 2 or 3 months, but I don't use alarms any more as they seem to increase use. I would contact the makers and ask for a new meter. Have your readings changed as it might indicate a fault? I use normal (not rechargeable) batteries supplied by Aviva on request every few months |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carb Free Foods WelcomeVeg crisps may have beetroot and parsnip in there...and personally they bump my BGs every time. You should find the CHO value on the packet to help you decide whether they are suitable to use in your particular situation. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / My BG Diary - All Comments Welcomed Can I have some comments on these BG readings please?I'm currently on: QA/Humalog - 1:10 BI/Lantus - 18u at 10pm 21/02 I went onto a split dose of Lantus 10am & 10pm 27/06 back onto a single dose because I didn't know if the split was working for me & because Lantus is really a single dose insulin unlike Levemir which can be split. I don't know if my Lantus is running out ie not working the full 24 hrs. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / No carb day .. Nearly If within an hour of next meal you can take it eith dinner but not correct....It's more in the middle of your insulin action from the previous meal then you would take for it there and then and it would be the normal dose provided your previous carb count and timing was good... You can check your bg at the snack and expect it to be higher....if its on target in the middle of the insulin action you may have more units still to go and would need to consider that before dosing for the snack... |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / No carb day .. Nearly I have just been looking this up myself as everyone seems to mention what they are taking. My QA is Novorapid which I believe starts to work in 15 mins. My BI is Insulatard which, according to the leaflet is a isophane insulin suspension (NPH) And starts to work in 1.5 hours and lasts for 24 hrs I split this and take 8 units morn and night, I have been using my QA 4times a day before meals if neccessary. Thats what i have figured out from everything i have read. But I would like to know from all you people out there that seem to know what you're doing < smiling>. If I had a snack in between meals should I have more QA. As my lunchtime insulin may still be working I am not sure how I would work all this out Ie- lunch at 1:30pm BG 4.4. CP 6 QA 3 I've had a snack at 5:30 pm. CP 2.5 would anyone have taken more for that or just waited until dinner time to correct as normal. I am thinking of this more during the evening as that's when I get "the munches" Muddled Mary xx |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carb Free Foods Firstly, you don't need to go 10 hours straight, no one can be expected to do that..........look at THIS...!! I usually go for chicken salads or omelettes..........I would imagine your veg crisps would be OK, but for best results just stick to meat and eggs and cheese....... It shouldn't be that bad if you just do 4-5 hours carb free slots..... |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carb Free Foods I've just started on an insulin pump and to test the effectiveness of my basal rates, I have to have a carb-free day tomorrow, from 8am until 6pm. I adore my carbs and am panicking at the though of a whole 10 hours without any! I've bought some Tyrres Veg Crisps (beetroot, parsnip & carrot) to ease my pain, thinking that they're cooked vegetables so must be ok to have. Does anyone have any idea about this? Any other suggestions for yummy carb-free foods that seem like the real thing would be greatly appreciated! |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hyperglycaemia in early hours of the morning I was told that injecting into muscle would be painful, but haven't found it any more painful than injecting into the abdomen, in fact often it doesn't hurt at all, whereas some injections into the abdomen reach an 8 out of 10 on the pain scale. I do only use 4mm needles though so I think it only just reaches the muscle :-) |

Topic: General Discussion / Coeliac as well as Diabetic? I have Type 1 Diabetes and just been diagnosed as Celiac as well. (What a nightmare).I am now just waiting at the time of this posting for the the specialist and Dietician appointments. I didn’t think I had a Gluten problem; it was only picked up at my Diabetes review because I mentioned I was losing weight and sent to have a blood test, and then the camera job. Has anyone any advice to help me adapt to this drastic life change. How do you cope with eating out, Holidays, food shopping etc, you know just the normal things in life if you know what I mean. I’m just glad that I was lucky enough to have previously been sent on the DAFNE course that will help me understand what this new tasteless food diet is doing to my blood sugars. I know its not just all about me (insert subtle joke) but please wish me luck. |
