Topic: Questions for HCPs / insulin pump Still going well on the Omnipod. Been having a few hypos, at specific times of day so ratios etc been altered again! One limitation is that the basal rate only goes as low as 0.05... But I need to have a rate of 0.00 at certain times which can only be done using temp basal rates...so it's up at midnight and 6am every day to switch to temp basal!Consultants very happy..and me too.. Hba1c is at 43 and within the pregnancy target range I have to aim for (am not pregnant tho!) Feel so much better and freer since being on the omnipod...highly recommend it! |

Topic: General Discussion / batteries for the accu-chek Hey Numo,I know what you mean about the Accu Check Mobile. It can be very temperamental about the blood sample. I found it was best just to shove it's nose in my pool of blood and that usually worked. Compared to the amount of blood it needs versus a meter like a Freestyle Lite though, it was like a vampire. However, one of the women on my DAFNE course loves the Mobile and won't try any other meter, so horses for courses I guess. |

Topic: General Discussion / ulcers You may have some kind of infection coming on and that's sending your BGs haywire. We all become insulin resistant when an infection takes hold. You may not have any symptoms yet, but my BGs normally tell me 1 or 2 days before the grot arrives. The mouth ulcer may be indicative of your overall condition....I sound like I should be selling Bob Martin cure all tablets for man's best friend! Regards Garry |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Can you download to a Blackberry sorry there will not be an app for the blackberry, its a niche market that gets smaller and smaller with each phone they release. Android based phones are 60% of the market, apple are 30-35% and then there are the rest. We really don't have the resources to develop an app for a platform that in all probability won't be there any more in a couple of years. If someone volunteers to produce one we would be happy to work with them, however unless that happens there will not be one produced. Sorry but we are just a bunch of graduates not a professional company with a lot of people to do the work. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Can you download to a Blackberry I have been a little disappointed that nobody has developed a Blackberry version for the App and with my current Android contract running out this year I was hoping to go back to a Blackberry as I found Blackberry better for emails.I have been checking the forum in a hope that somebody would have created an App for the Blackberry but nothing so far. With changing the phone later this year I may just have to stop storing my readings on the phone and may just use the website to look at the forums, but I would prefer to be able to load the readings onto a phone. |

Topic: General Discussion / batteries for the accu-chek I have never had to change batteries on any of my Optium meters. My latest is well over a year old.The Accu Chek mobile I was given on my Dafne course. I thought it was a brilliant idea and immediately shelved my Optium. However, as I said above it proved to be bulky and heavy and difficult to use one-handed with small hands. I found the lancing device difficult to span with my hand making lancing awkward and very painful. The meter proved to have a very restricted temperature range and stopped working well within the range of other meters, so it couldn't be left in the car. It didn't like sunshine either. If too much blood was applied to the tape, it thought it hadn't received enough. I couldn't find a way to reset it without switching the meter off and on again. By which time the process had become very messy in the restricted space behind a steering wheel. Hence I abandoned my Accu-Chek Mobile and went for a lighter meter more suitable for a woman's build and lifestyle. |

Topic: General Discussion / batteries for the accu-chek Abbott - manufacturers of the Optium Xceed, will send you out a replacement battery, here in the UK, usually within 2 days. I am very pleased with my 2 meters. One is in everyday use and the other a spare which only gets used for the occasional overnight test.Current battery has been in daily service for 10 months. Odd use meter battery must be 14 or 15 months old now. Regards Garry |

I haven't had any trouble with the Accu Chek Mobile, but my Accu Chek Expert needs new batteries (3 x AAA) every 2-3 months. The Optium Exceed lasts around a year for me. Optium Freestyle Lite also seems to last about a year, but I think the amount of time they spend in the cold affects battery life too. |

Interesting to read your comments on the accu chek. I've just changed my meter to an accu chek mobile. Anyone had any bad experiences with it? |

I gave up on my Accu-Chek meter as I found it bulky, heavy and temperamental. My Bayer meter is rechargable, so no batteries at all. My Optium Freestyle Lite I have been using now for well over a year and have never needed to change batteries. Interesting to hear different experiences with different meters. So often a meter can seem like a good design but turn out to be disappointing in practise. |

Interesting that Aviva will provide batteries. One Touch used to do this, but when I contacted them recently to request batteries for my One Touch Ultra they told me they no longer provide free batteries. Not sure how I feel about this - I assumed that providing free batteries was an incentive to encourage us to stay loyal to their meters. I must say that if Aviva are still providing them I'll have to have a think... |

Topic: General Discussion / Extreme heat Like Jacqueline, my levels have been all over the shop during the hot spell, but mainly on the high side (9 - 11). Because of this I have usually had to correct at bedtime when I take my BI, but the last couple of nights I've managed to engineer a target reading at bedtime and have done a couple of overnight tests, which seem to suggest that my BI isn't affected. Also, I normally use a 2 - 3 correction ratio (i.e. 2 units of Novorapid to reduce levels by 3), but this seems too much in the hot weather, which has led to a few hypos when correcting. Having said all that, I'm loving the hot weather!Stew |

Topic: General Discussion / Extreme heat Evening all. The heat is seriously affecting my blood glucose levels. I am having the opposite to everyone else, my readings are averaging 15-17. I usually wake up with a reading of 6 or 7 and now its 15-17. At bedtime I am usually 7-9 and now it's 17. I am taking more insulin also. I usually have 8 units fast acting at breakfast. and after breakfast it goes up to about 9-10 then starts dropping back to 8-9. then before lunch I inject 8 -10 units and late afternoon I am about 7-9. I usually inject 6 -12 units at evening before dinner and at bedtime I am usually about 7-8. Now I am injecting almost twice as much as normal to try and keep my sugars lower. Also before bed last night I had an extra 6 units of fast acting which would normally bring me into a hypo, but I remained at 15 before bed and 15.2 when I woke up. This is NOT Normal!!! Now its either the weather or the insulin we are all using does NOT work so well in extreme temperatures. It could be one of both of these things. I would suggest trying to cool the insulin down where possible, but not always feasible in work hours etc... Diabetes UK sent out an info update last week about the insulin causing hypos or highs during hot weather. It could be we may have to work on "Sick Day" rules but if DAFNE don't know then we are stuffed!! |

Topic: General Discussion / Extreme heat The extreme heat makes your insulin more effective so will result in more hypos/lows. The same way that if you load yourself full of insulin and soon after hop into a hot shower you are more prone to lows. The same is true of extreme cold. I was told from an early age that this happened but I had noticed the same tendency with the cold so queried it at the DAFNE course and was told that extremes of temperature, both hot and cold, will cause lower blood sugars (it was in the HCPs course ringbinder - they looked it up). The drop in the cold I was putting down to alot more energy being used to just keep yourself warm. |

Topic: General Discussion / Extreme heat I've never been sure about the claim that heat affects your levels directly since being told on the first day of my DAFNE course that it doesn't.I haven't noticed anything like that and I've been boiling... Perhaps you're exercising more than you realise? Being low a lot generally suggests a dose needs dropping somewhere too. Take care y'all. |
