Hi,

Just finished the DAFNE course last week so new to the site. I am heading away on my holidays soon and am looking to find something that will keep my insulin cool when i am out and about. Could anyone advise on this please?

Thanks

Rafa,

I'd definitely recommend a Frio wallet - I've used them in hot countries since I was diagnosed and they're great. All you need to do it activate them in water then top up the water every couple of days:

I would echo what Simon has said about Frio wallets. Used mine driving across Death Valley in California where the temp was 45 deg C. and the insulin was kept cool enough not to be affected.

Just a word of warning...activate the gel after you go through all the checks at the airport. I had one zealous security officer want the gel "removed" as it was not < 100mls.

I now activate it when I am through bag searches etc. A doctor's letter may also be handy. The Frio wallets are the greatest.

Am I making assumptions whenever I go anywhere I go by plane!

I'm off to California and Death Valley soon too, and I was wondering, after seeing that temperatures might not drop below 30 C during the night, whether you had any problems keeping your blood test monitor and test strips cool enough too? My strips say they should be kept below 30 C. I've used the Frio packs for insulin before but wasn't sure about keeping the strips and machine in them.

Re the meter: i live in Qld (summer temps often over 30 degrees) and only twice has my meter given me the error message related to temperature. This was rectified by moving my bag from out of the sun into a shady place and waiting and then it worked OK. I'd try being mindful of the possibility and deal with that if it happens. I would also take two meters.
