Topic: General Discussion / Pumps in the UK

By wireless do you mean tubeless.......?

If so the omnipod is the one for you, and yes, I do believe it is available in the UK.......

My pump clinic does the Medtronic Minimed Veo, which comes in 2 models, one holding a larger reservoir for folk like me who need more due to my size....and a Roche model, so only 2 options, which I thought was crap, but they said it allowed them to be better equipped to train their patients only having 2 to learn about......

Does you consultant know your coming to talk about the pump........?

No need to apologize, this is the place to ask the questions........

You can take your BI whenever you like, its completely independent from your digestion and carb in take.....

Just take it every night before bed, which obviously could be at different times every day, as long as your getting a full 24 hours coverage with a small overlap your fine......

I took my AM BI at 6:45 am and my PM BI at 10:30 pm. I would have taken my PM BI later however I started to run out of my AM BI earlier than bed time so had to tweak in order to not have higher numbers at night but also to assist in dropping my waking levels......

Ahh right thanks. Probably won't be eating until 10pm tonight and going to bed at 12 so was afraid of an overlap with the carbs only two hours in my system when taking my BI. Thanks again.

Topic: General Discussion / Pumps in the UK

Hello all,
I'm going to see my Consultant in less than 2 weeks time and am going to ask about being put on a Pump and was wondering if anyone can recommend a particular one in the UK?
I have been chatting with VickyP who has the OmniPod which looks perfect as it is Tubeless but I'm not sure but this may not be available in the UK?
Is there a Tubeless pump available in the UK does anyone know?

Thanks in advance if anyone can assist Very Happy
Cheers,
Anele.

Basically she means no carbs working during the night, so for most that would mean they could have dinner, just no supper.....

If you have your dinner at 7-8 pm,. your carbs and insulin should be expired by 11-12 pm........you would test at 11-12, then wake up at 3 am and test......

the 3 am test is purely because it the time of day when the body is at it lowest production of hormones and so will not effect the blood sugar reading, when it hits 4, 5, 6, people will normally see a rise due to the dawn phenomenon effect......which would mislead you when evaluating your overnight background dose...

Your background was OK the last time you checked was it not........?

Last nights 7.6, then 9.0, then 7.6 may be as a result of either some small amount of carbs still going, or a need for more BI insulin overnight........

as its within 1-2mmol/l I would assume the BI dose is OK......

Your dinner blood sugars are good also, you stayed in single figures and peaked at 8.9........

All these results are showing me that your doses are pretty much bang on.......

Thanks. I never really have supper at all so my last carbs would be 8pm or shortly afterwards. The early days of this week threw me a bit with the high BG in the mornings but last night seemed to work out ok.

If you had a late dinner say between 9pm - 10pm would you still take the BI when going to bed between 11pm-12 or would you wait the four hours and set the alarm to take the BI then? Sorry with all the questions.

Laura, sorry to hear you've had to stop working. I agree with novorapidboi, you should definitely try to get benefits, if you think you might be entitled to them. You don't get if you don't ask Smile

Got this from the gov.uk website for DLA benefit:

Your disability or health condition must mean one or both of the following are true:

you need help looking after yourself

you have walking difficulties

You must have had these difficulties for at least 3 months and expect them to last for at least 6 months. If you’re terminally ill (ie not expected to live more than 6 months), you don’t need to have had these difficulties for 3 months.

So I would say that yes you can claim benefit, at least after the 3 months mark.......

One things for sure, you will no doubt need to try anyway, so you will find out one way or another.....

Good luck and welcome to the forum.....

Very Happy

The fact that you were 7.6 when you went to bed, and when you woke up, suggests your basal is ok. As you say, maybe keep an eye on your readings 4hours after dinner. Maybe also a carb free test at 3am?

Carb free test at 3am as in no carbs for my dinner the previous night? Thanks.

If you took the wrong ratio by mistake and realised an hour or two after would you correct straightaway or wait until the next meal?

Was 4.2 at dinner last night (7pm) and had 8cps so took aq 8-2. At 9pm i was BG 8.9 and then at bedtime four hours after my dinner (11pm) my BG was 7.6. I took a 3am BG and i was 9.0 then at 0640am i was 7.6. Fairly confused over the previous few nights but maybe it's my ratio at dinner that needs to be kept an eye on.

Yes, Rafa, exactly........

In order for you to evaluate your dinner time dose you would need to test after all carbs and insulin have expired. If its OK, then you can assume the rise is happening overnight or because of the dawn phenomenon.

But as you recently looked at your BI, your evening meal ratio may need tweaked.

Yes thought so thanks. Last night i waited four hours and my BG was 12.2 so i took a qa +2 and my BI of 16 and was still 12.1 this morning at 6am. Took my BI last night at midnight as my dinner was at 8pm. Strange because all last week my BG at 6am were more or less perfect and i was having my dinner each night between 7.30 - 8pm and BI between 10pm-11pm. I think it might well be a case of adjusting my dinner tiem ratio. Currently on 1:1

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Blood Glucose in the morning

Hi,

Due to work and the commute home i would basically be having my dinner anytime between 7.30pm-8pm during the week. I would then normally go to bed between 10pm-11pm and have noticed the last two nights my BG has been good by my standards 7.7 and 6.0 yet when i woke up my bloods were 13.8 and then this morning 12.3. I am wondering should i have tested around 12-1am seen as my qa would have only two hours in from my dinner when i went to bed.

Thanks.

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin Cooling Wallet?

Re the meter: i live in Qld (summer temps often over 30 degrees) and only twice has my meter given me the error message related to temperature. This was rectified by moving my bag from out of the sun into a shady place and waiting and then it worked OK. I'd try being mindful of the possibility and deal with that if it happens. I would also take two meters.

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin Cooling Wallet?

I'm off to California and Death Valley soon too, and I was wondering, after seeing that temperatures might not drop below 30 C during the night, whether you had any problems keeping your blood test monitor and test strips cool enough too? My strips say they should be kept below 30 C. I've used the Frio packs for insulin before but wasn't sure about keeping the strips and machine in them.

I would echo what Simon has said about Frio wallets. Used mine driving across Death Valley in California where the temp was 45 deg C. and the insulin was kept cool enough not to be affected. Just remember to keep the gel wet.
