Topic: General Discussion / Insulin Cooling Wallet?

Re the meter: i live in Qld (summer temps often over 30 degrees) and only twice has my meter given me the error message related to temperature. This was rectified by moving my bag from out of the sun into a shady place and waiting and then it worked OK. I'd try being mindful of the possibility and deal with that if it happens. I would also take two meters.

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin Cooling Wallet?

I'm off to California and Death Valley soon too, and I was wondering, after seeing that temperatures might not drop below 30 C during the night, whether you had any problems keeping your blood test monitor and test strips cool enough too? My strips say they should be kept below 30 C. I've used the Frio packs for insulin before but wasn't sure about keeping the strips and machine in them.

I would echo what Simon has said about Frio wallets. Used mine driving across Death Valley in California where the temp was 45 deg C. and the insulin was kept cool enough not to be affected. Just remember to keep the gel wet.

a wee tweak to timing or dose may even bring you down lower........

well done........

Thanks. Delighted to be honest. Lets just say it's a long time since i can remember readings like them in the morning! Just have to keep on top of it now.

Topic: Questions for HCPs / High Bloods

I noticed today at lunch i was 4.7 and had 9 cps but because i am going for a run after work i just took 7 untis of aq. This was at 1.25pm and then just there at 3.35pm i was 18.4. Now normally mid afternoon i would be between 11-13 but when i would have my dinner at 7-7.30pm i would be within range. I ate 2 cps there and took 2 qa for it and a +2 because i was afraid the lunch time qa did not go into me. Didn't want to be getting ready for the runa nd find i was 18. Any opinions please?

Topic: Questions for HCPs / ACCURATE BG READINGS

The 'warwick' part was my understanding of the Diabetes Experiment book i.e generally your body will only breakdown protein to glucose if it has no other option i.e no carbs to convert. I believe that protein conversion is also slower than standard carb conversion i.e like a low GI food. I think it is excluded from DAFNE because it is too complex an area for most people to try to get their heads round especially as a lot of people may have just been introduced to catb counting and a lot of other new ideas.

Jwo can you explain why you think Protein affects blood glucose ? Some references etc, I'm not sure I agree with your statement. The reason DAFNE ( not just the UK as far as I am aware) do not
count Protein is it is a very complex area that is not straightforward. This is why I am cautious about stating it as a 'fact'.

I currently count protein myself. To be exact:

Add up total protein; if it is over 20g, that book (by a lady called Ginger) mentioned on the Experiment 1 thread directs to minus 20 from that and then divide the total by 2. A lot of my BGs have started making a lot more sense since doing this. I had hit a wall with working out my doses before starting to try it.

Further along however, Warwick has enlightened me to another approach but I have not applied it myself yet. If needed, I can try to find it in my long running help thread found in the HCP section of the forums since I cannot remember exactly what was given as direction (something about if only eating proteins then take insulin but if with carbs then don't, but I might be remembering wrong).

Edit:
Found it, it's on Page 17 of my thread. To quote:

Warwick said:
2) Protein - Gary believes that protein does raise BGLs but only if no carb is consumed with it. So if you consume carbs and protein, don't worry about the protein portion, but if it is a carb-free meal with protein, then treat the protein as being half carb, and dose for it. E.g. if you have 30g of protein and no carb, then take QA as if you had had 15g carb.

Seems to be a few ideas bouncing around. :S

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Centrizine Hydrochloride and an affect on insulin sensitivity

I have been taking ceterizine continuously for many years as have chronic rhinitis (basically a dust allergy that causes a constant runny nose if don't take anything). My ratios are stable at 1:1.5. Maybe the effect is noticeable as you only took for a short time and I have been taking so long any effect on me is my normal.

can't say I have ever noticed this effect. I used to take truck loads of Cetirizine and never really had any side effects, however we are obviously all different and what happens to me may not happen to you and vice-versa. Its not a published side-effect of the drug, but for most drugs the published side-effects are those widely observed in a number of people not individuals.

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Centrizine Hydrochloride and an affect on insulin sensitivity

Took an anti histamine tablet a day, for 5 days, after being bitten on the leg, by a fly in the garden.
Big itch driving me crackers and some swelling which I was concerned about.
Insulin resistant and normally have to use QA ratios of 2:1 or 2.5:1 and 2:1 with meals but found I needed to knock the dinner ratio back particularly to 1.5:1.
Has anyone else noticed this?
Maybe I am erroneously connecting two things here. Would appreciate help from HCPs or another forum user who may use these tablets on a more regular basis.
Regards
Garry

Many thanks for the replies. No stupidly i didn't treat any of them. Crazy really. Will try again tonight to get into range nad do a 3am. I have all my recordings etc recorded so will wait until Monday and post my last weeks readings to see what people think. Last night for example i was 4.2 at 1930 so had 10cps in Nandos and took 10-2 qa. Two hours later i had a two fingered kit kat and took 1 cp of qa. I didn't do my suagrs at this stage. Then at 2220 i was 2.3 and took 1cp of quick acting. I took my BI at this time. Then at 2310 i was 3.6 so had 1.5 cp (slice of brown toast). At 0030 i was 4.3 so went to sleep. Got up at 0630 and was 8.8. At 0830 having my breakfast i was 11.9 so had 4.5 cps and took my qa ration 1.5/1 + 1 qa adjustment. Will see how i fair out for the rest of the day.

Many thanks again.

Great that you reduced your QA for your Nandos as your BG was below target Smile
But at 22.20 you were hypo and you need AT LEAST 1.5 CPs to treat this which might explain why you were still low at 23.10.

It's a lesson for everyone not to get complacent about low readings and treatment of hypos, especially as there are increased chances of having driving licences revoked if you develop hypo unawareness or have severe hypos.

Yes until DAFNE i would have been lax about the driving rules etc with regards to BG levels.
